Summer gardening 한여름 정원 가꾸기

I had a dream last night. In my dream, my eldest brother let me talk before people. He thought that I could share more efficiently because I have some experience.

At the beginning of the mission, I was not an eloquent speaker at all. Whenever I had to talk in public, I made much effort to overcome my limitations. I still have to improve my communication skill. Just as flowers and vegetables grow gradually, I am also improving myself little by little.

On that note, blooming flowers are one of the precious gifts we can share with others. Various wildflowers along the path of the forest take turns to bloom. Wildflowers, as they are, attract my attention. Wildflowers exist under big and small trees, but they are still happy and free in their lower places.

In one of the houses where we stayed during the intensive mission, there was a backyard with several trees, plants, flowers and grass. One day, the house owner wanted to dig up some parts of the grass so as to grow vegetables at home. She thought of transforming some parts of the lawn in consideration of her elder sister who would move into her house sooner or later.

For that project only, she had to pay considerable dollars. Out of heartfelt gratitude for allowing us to stay at her house for several weeks, I was willing to dig up some parts of the grass with a shovel and I replaced the hard ground with fertilized soil. Then, I made a simple fence with stones and bricks that I found around the wall of the house.

Carrying the fertilized soil from the front yard to the backyard took time, and I sweated a lot. I worked so hard that I even felt some pain in my right shin. I worked with all my heart because I was grateful for her generosity.

When the lawn was tidied up, she planted lettuce, chicory, eggplant, basil, sesame, kale, pepper, etc. The lawn in the backyard was transformed into a different look! What a joy of picking and eating vegetables grown in the garden!

When I came back from mission trips, I found more flowers blooming in the backyard of our community. Various kinds of flowers are now blooming in patio pots and backyard gardens. Vegetables are also growing in sunny vegetable beds and pots.

I noticed that the remaining community members take turns watering the gardens while two postulants with their formator are away from the community for summer vacation and retreat. A summer gardening guide for watering, weeding and harvesting has been well prepared to give information regarding the maintenance of the gardens.

We make constant efforts to make nature beautiful and peaceful, but the Canadian wildfires with smoke are still not under control. Our nature goes through its ups and downs as in our life. In spite of all the struggling situations, we shall have to give thanks for everything to the Lord.

"Praise the Lord from the earth, you, sea monsters and all the deeps of the sea; Lightning and hail, snow and thick clouds, storm wind that fulfills his command; Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars; animals wild and tame, creatures that crawl and birds that fly …" (Psalm 148:7-10)

한여름 정원 가꾸기

어젯밤에 꿈을 꾸었다. 꿈에 큰오빠가 나타나 나로 하여금 사람들 앞에서 말하게 했다. 큰오빠는 나에게 경험이 있어 사람들과 더 효율적으로 무언가를 나눌 수 있다고 생각했던 것이다.

선교 여정이 시작될 무렵 나는 유창하게 말하지 못하여 사람들 앞에서 이야기할 때마다 그 한계를 극복하려고 나름 많은 노력을 기울였다. 나는 여전히 의사 소통 기술을 향상시켜야 한다. 꽃과 채소들이 서서히 자라듯 나도 조금씩 나아지고 있다.

그런 의미에서 점점 피어나는 꽃은 우리가 사람들과 나눌 수 있는 소중한 선물 가운데 하나다. 숲길을 따라 다채로운 들꽃이 번갈아 피어난다. 들꽃은 있는 그대로의 자연스러운 모습으로 눈길을 끈다. 들꽃은 크고 작은 나무 아래 피어나지만 그 낮은 곳에서도 여전히 행복하며 자유롭다.

집중 선교 동안 우리가 머무른 집 가운데 한 곳에는 나무 몇 그루와 식물, 꽃과 잔디가 펼쳐진 뒷마당이 있었다. 어느 날 집주인이 채소를 기르기 위해 잔디 일부를 캐내고 싶어했다. 조만간 이 집으로 이사 올 언니를 위해 잔디밭 일부를 채소밭으로 뒤바꾸려고 했다.

잔디를 재정비하려면 상당한 금액을 지불해야 했다. 몇 주 동안 우리가 그 집에 머물게 해준 것에 대해 진심으로 감사드리는 마음으로 나는 기꺼이 삽질을 하여 잔디를 파낸 다음 굳은 땅에 거름 흙을 뒤섞어 채소밭을 마련했다. 그런 다음 집 담벼락 주변에서 골라온 돌과 벽돌로 소담한 울타리를 만들었다.

앞마당에서 뒷마당까지 거름 흙을 옮기느라 시간이 걸렸고 땀이 비 오듯 흘렀다. 오른쪽 허벅지에 통증이 생길 만큼 열심히 움직였다. 그 자매의 관대함이 참으로 고마웠기에 온 마음을 다해 일했다.

잔디를 정리하자 그 자매는 상추, 치커리, 가지, 바질, 참깨, 케일, 고추 등을 심었다. 드디어 뒷마당 잔디밭이 탈바꿈하여 새로운 모습을 드러냈다! 텃밭에서 기르는 채소를 따서 먹는 즐거움은 그 얼마나 큰가!

선교 여행에서 돌아왔을 때 우리 공동체 뒷마당에 꽃들이 많이 피어 있는 것을 보았다. 다양한 꽃들이 안뜰에 놓인 화분과 뒤뜰 정원에 활짝 피어났고, 햇볕이 잘 드는 채소밭과 화분에서도 채소들이 무럭무럭 자라고 있었다.

여름 휴가를 보내고 피정을 하기 위해 청원장과 두 청원자들이 떠나 있는 동안 공동체에 남아 있는 수녀들이 번갈아 가며 정원에 물을 주고 있었다. 정원 관리 정보 차원에서 마련된 물주기, 풀 뽑기, 수확하기에 관련된 한여름 정원 가꾸기 지침이 잘 준비되어 있었다.

자연을 아름답고 평화롭게 만들기 위해 우리는 부단한 노력을 기울이지만 끊임없이 타올라 연기를 뿜어내는 캐나다 산불은 여전히 통제되지 못하고 있다. 우리네 삶처럼 자연 또한 끊임없이 이어지는 기복을 겪는다. 하지만 우리는 온갖 어려움 속에서도 모든 것에 주님께 감사드려야 하리라.

"주님을 찬미하여라, 땅으로부터. 용들과 깊은 모든 바다들아. 불이며 우박, 눈이며 안개, 그분 말씀을 수행하는 거센 바람아. 산들과 모든 언덕들, 과일나무와 모든 향백나무들아. 들짐승과 모든 집짐승, 길짐승과 날짐승들아."(시편 148,7-10)

Angelic people 천사 같은 사람들

Have you ever experienced that you are healed and refreshed during sleep? Do you believe in the communal presence of guardian angels among us?

I do believe in the helping and guiding hands of guardian angels in our life. Surely, there are many angelic people with goodwill around us. A certain supernatural and mysterious power constantly accompanies us in the midst of the human network.

During our mission trips to Canada for two months, I constantly felt the presence of guardian angels supporting and guiding our journey. Especially whenever I meet volunteers, collaborators, benefactors or cooperators with goodwill and generosity, I am deeply touched by their open hands and attentive care akin to that of guardian angels. I really appreciate their faithful presence along the path of life.

Thanks to warm-hearted and generous people, the results of the mission are also fruitful. Looking at the process and its fruitfulness, I always appreciate the mysterious presence of guardian angels and the power of prayers coming from friends, family and community.

In one of the collaborators' houses, I noticed many figures of angels decorated in each room. Probably, it seemed that she, living alone, is comforted by the consoling presence of angels all around.

One of my favorite prayers is a prayer to one's guardian angel: "Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom God's love entrusts me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen."

In our prayer tradition of the Pauline Family, the first Thursday is dedicated to the guardian angel.

So, we pray to know our guardian angels better, to be delivered from the deceits of the devil in spiritual and material dangers, and to follow our angels in their attention and efforts to lead us to heaven.

How consoling and inspiring the constant presence of guardian angels is! Even during sleep, I feel the inspiring guide of guardian angels faithfully accompanying my steps.

On a pilgrimage to some of the old Catholic churches on the East Coast of Canada, the images of angels drew my attention. The various images of angels appear here and there in the construction of the churches.

As heavenly protectors, guides, intercessors and God's messengers, angels either appear in human form or in their true form to deliver heavenly messages, especially during a time of desperate need and hopelessness. Gabriel, Michael and Raphael are some of the names of angels mentioned in the Bible.

Physically or in a dream or vision, angels appeared to Abraham, Lot, Daniel, Zacharia, Joseph, Mary, the shepherds, Peter in captivity, John in prison, Mary Magdalene, the apostles, Philip, Cornelius, Herod and Paul. During the devil's temptations, angels also appeared to Jesus.

By welcoming three strangers, Abraham accepted God into his midst in Genesis 18:1-15. An angel appeared to Joseph in his dream and directed him what to do.

"Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels." (Hebrews 13:2)

"Pay it forward" is an inspiring movement to do something kind and useful for someone because someone else has done something good for you. It describes the beneficiary of a good deed repaying the kindness to others instead of the original benefactor. An angel invites another angel, and the cycle of goodness goes on and on.

천사 같은 사람들

잠자는 동안 치유되어 새롭게 된 적이 있는가? 우리 가운데 수호천사가 통공하며 존재한다고 믿는가?

나는 우리 삶 가운데 우리에게 도움을 주며 우리를 이끄는 수호천사의 손길을 믿는다. 확실히 우리 주변에는 선의를 지닌 천사 같은 사람들이 많이 있다. 초자연적이고 신비로운 어떤 힘이 인간의 관계망 한복판에서 끊임없이 우리를 동반한다.

두 달 동안 캐나다 선교 여행을 하면서 나는 우리의 여정을 지원하며 이끄는 수호천사의 현존을 한결같이 느꼈다. 특히 선의와 관대함을 지닌 자원봉사자, 협력자, 은인들을 만날 때마다 나는 수호천사처럼 열린 손으로 섬세하게 배려하는 손길에 깊은 감동을 받는다. 삶의 여정 가운데 만나는 이들의 충실한 도움에 진심으로 감사드린다.

마음이 따뜻하고 너그러운 분들 덕분에 선교의 결실도 풍요롭다. 선교 여정과 그 결실을 보면서 나는 신비로운 수호천사들의 현존, 친구들과 가족과 공동체가 보내는 기도의 힘에 늘 감사드린다.

어느 협력자 집에 머물면서 방마다 장식된 다양한 천사들의 모습을 본 적이 있다. 아마도 홀로 살기에 방 곳곳에 늘어선 천사들이 위로하는 것 같았다.

내가 가장 좋아하는 기도 가운데 하나는 수호천사께 드리는 기도다. “저를 지켜주시는 수호천사님, 인자하신 주님께서 저를 당신께 맡기셨으니 오늘 저를 비추시고 지켜주시며 인도하시고 다스리소서. 아멘.”

바오로 가족 수도회의 기도 전통에 따르면 첫 목요일은 수호천사에게 봉헌된다. 그래서 우리는 수호천사를 더 잘 알고, 우리가 물질적 정신적 위험에 처해 있을 때 악마의 유혹에서 벗어나며, 우리를 천국으로 인도하기 위해 염려하고 애쓰는 수호천사를 따라가도록 기도한다.

수호천사의 한결같은 현존은 참으로 많은 위안과 영감을 준다! 잠을 자는 동안에도 발걸음마다 충실하게 동행하며 영감을 주는 수호천사의 인도를 느낀다.

캐나다 동부의 유서 깊은 몇몇 성당을 순례하는 가운데 천사들의 이미지가 눈길을 끌었다. 성당 건축물 여기저기에 다양한 천사 모습이 드러난다.

천상 보호자요 안내자, 중재자, 하느님의 메신저로서 천사들은 하늘의 메시지를 전하기 위해 인간이나 천사 모습으로 나타난다. 특히 절박한 상황이나 희망이 없어 보일 때 나타난다. 가브리엘, 미카엘, 라파엘은 성경에 그 이름이 언급된 천사들이다.

육안으로, 또는 꿈이나 환시 가운데 천사들은 아브라함, 룻, 다니엘, 즈카르야, 요셉, 마리아, 목동들, 포로가 된 베드로, 감옥에 갇힌 요한, 마리아 막달레나, 사도들, 필립보, 고르넬리오, 헤로데, 바오로에게 나타났다. 악마가 예수님을 유혹할 때도 천사가 나타났다.

창세기 18장 1-15절에서 아브라함은 세 명의 낯선 사람들을 환대함으로써 하느님을 집안에 받아들였다. 한 천사가 요셉의 꿈에 나타나 그가 해야 할 일을 가르쳐 주기도 했다.

"손님 접대를 소홀히 하지 마십시오. 손님 접대를 하다가 어떤 이들은 모르는 사이에 천사들을 접대하기도 하였습니다." (히브리서 13,2)

"Pay it forward"는 자신이 받은 도움을 또 다른 사람에게 베푸는 영감 어린 움직임이다. 선행의 수혜자가 원래의 은인이 아닌 다른 사람을 친절하게 대하며 은혜를 갚는 것을 뜻한다. 한 천사는 또 다른 천사를 초대하며, 그 선의는 끊임없이 돌고 돈다.

Brother Andre 앙드레 수사

Alfred Bessette (1845-1937) was one of those called to be a follower of Jesus. His journeys from laborer to religious brother, from doorkeeper to builder and unifier of the church drew much attention. As the man of miracles on Mount Royal in Montreal, he is now the patron saint of family caregivers in Canada.

He was born on Aug. 9, 1845, in Saint-Gregoire d'Iberville, Quebec, as the eighth of 12 children. His father, Isaac Bessette, a carpenter and lumberman, was killed by a falling tree when Alfred was 9 years old. His mother Clothilde Foisy passed away from tuberculosis two years later.

In spite of his chronic stomach pains and little education, he had a lively faith and a strong devotion to Saint Joseph. He sincerely asked St. Joseph to give him health and ability. He used to say, "How good the good Lord is! He always dotes on us!"

He worked hard on a farm and took various jobs such as apprentice shoemaker, blacksmith, tinsmith, wheelwright and baker. At age 18, he moved to work at the textile mills across Connecticut in the U.S. but he returned to his country after four years.

Through sincere prayers, he cultivated a virtuous life that caught the eye of the parish priest, Andre Provencal, who guided him to enter the Congregation of Holy Cross, founded by Basile Antoine Moreau in France in 1837. Initially, Holy Cross did not accept Alfred because of his poor health, but he appealed to a visiting archbishop of Montreal.

With the grace of God, he took the religious name Andre after his parish priest and he made his final vows on Feb. 2, 1874, at the age of 28.

Because of his frail health and lack of formal education, Brother Andre was assigned doorkeeper of Notre Dame College where he cheerfully greeted visitors and students' parents and tended to their needs. He also served as a gardener, lamp tender, nurse, barber, laundry worker and messenger.

The daily visitors soon included the sick, the suffering and the downtrodden. When they asked for healing, saying, "Brother Andre, if you want to, you can cure me," he would humbly reply, "No, not I, but St. Joseph can cure you if you put your trust in him."

It was to honor St. Joseph that Brother Andre and his friends built an oratory in 1904. He saved the money he earned from giving haircuts to students. As more people kept coming, he was assigned as caretaker of St. Joseph's Oratory in 1909.

Then, the reconstruction went on until 1967. For this visionary project, Brother Andre placed total trust in St. Joseph, saying, "It's not my work; it's St. Joseph's. Put his statue in the middle of the construction; if St. Joseph wants a roof over his head, he'll see to it." Thus, St. Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal was built.

Many people admired his simplicity, humility, listening, compassion, humor, hospitality and opening to the sick, the wounded and the needy. He led them to God by praying with them. Many of them were cured. About 500 crutches and wheelchairs are now displayed in the Oratory. Brother Andre was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct. 17, 2010.

앙드레 수사

알프레드 베셋(1845-1937)은 예수님을 따르는 부르심을 받은 제자들 가운데 하나다. 노동자에서 수사로, 수위(문지기)에서 교회 건축가요 사람들을 하나로 모으는 역량을 지닌 사람이 된 그의 여정은 눈길을 끈다. 그는 몬트리올 몽로얄(로얄산)에서 기적을 일으킨 사람으로, 현재 캐나다 가족 간병인들의 수호성인이다.

앙드레 수사는 1845년 8월 9일 퀘벡 생 그레고르 디베르빌에서 열두 자녀 가운데 8번째로 태어났다. 그가 9살이었을 때 목수이자 벌목꾼이던 아버지 아이작 베셋이 쓰러진 나무에 깔려 선종했고, 그의 어머니 클로딜드 포이지는 그로부터 2년 후 결핵으로 세상을 떠났다.

그는 늘 만성 복통에 시달렸고 정식 교육을 받지 못했지만 요셉 성인께 대한 생생한 믿음과 굳건한 신심을 지니고 자신에게 건강과 능력을 달라고 간절히 청했다. “선하신 주님이 얼마나 좋으신 분인지요! 주님은 언제나 우리를 맹목적으로 사랑하십니다.” 하고 그는 말하곤 했다.

그는 농장에서 열심히 일했고, 견습 구두수선공, 대장장이, 양철공, 수레공, 제빵사 등 여러 가지 일을 했다. 18살에는 미국 코네티컷 주에 있는 섬유 공장에서 일하기 위해 이주했지만 4년 만에 고향으로 되돌아왔다.

열심히 기도하면서 덕스럽게 살아가는 그의 모습은 앙드레 프로방살 본당신부의 눈길을 끌었고, 앙드레 신부는 그가 1837년 프랑스에서 바질 앙투안 모로가 세운 성십자가수도회에 들어가도록 이끌었다. 처음에는 건강이 좋지 않다는 이유로 그를 받아들이지 않았으나, 그는 마침 수도회를 방문한 몬트리올 대주교에게 자신의 상황을 호소했다.

하느님의 은총으로 그는 본당신부를 따라 자신의 수도명을 앙드레로 선택했고, 1874년 2월 2일, 28살에 종신 서원을 했다.

허약한 건강과 미흡한 교육 때문에 앙드레 수사는 노틀담 대학 문지기 소임을 받아 방문객과 학부모들을 반갑게 맞이하며 그들의 요청에 응답했다. 그는 또한 정원사요 램프 관리자는 물론 간호, 이발, 세탁, 심부름 등을 하며 봉사했다.

날마다 방문하는 사람들 가운데는 환자들과 고통받는 이들, 상심한 이들도 있었다. 사람들은 “앙드레 수사님, 수사님이 원하신다면 저를 치유해 주실 수 있습니다.” 하고 말하며 자신을 치유해 주길 청했다. 그럴 때마다 앙드레 수사는 겸손하게 “아닙니다. 제가 치유하는 것이 아닙니다. 요셉 성인을 신뢰하면 당신은 치유될 수 있어요.” 하고 대답했다.

1904년, 앙드레 수사와 그의 친구들은 요셉 성인을 공경하기 위하여 작은 성당을 지었다. 그는 학생들의 머리를 깎아주고 번 돈을 모아 보탰으며, 점점 더 많은 사람이 모여들자 그는 1909년에 성 요셉 성당 관리인이 되었다.

성당 재건축은 1908년부터 1967년까지 지속되었다. 이처럼 앞을 내다본 건축 계획을 위해 앙드레 수사는 요셉 성인을 온전히 신뢰하며 이렇게 말했다. “이 성당은 내 일이 아니라 요셉 성인을 위한 것입니다. 공사장 한복판에 요셉상을 놓으십시오. 요셉 성인께서 당신 머리 위에 지붕을 올리기를 바라신다면 당신이 알아서 하실 것입니다.” 그리하여 몽로얄 성요셉성당이 세워졌다.

많은 사람이 그의 단순함과 겸손, 경청하는 자세, 연민 어린 마음, 유머와 환대, 환자들과 상처 입은 이들과 궁핍한 이들을 받아들이는 모습을 보고 감탄했다. 그는 사람들과 함께 기도하면서 그들을 하느님께 이끌었다. 그들 가운데 많은 사람이 치유되었고, 그들이 두고 간 500여 개의 목발과 휠체어가 성당에 전시되어 있다. 앙드레 수사는 2010년 10월 17일 교황 베네딕토 16세에 의해 성인품에 올랐다.

Two sides of Canada 캐나다의 두 모습

As I go on volunteer mission trips to the East Coast area of Canada, the most impressive thing is that this maple leaf country makes great efforts to be eco-friendly and save the earth.

As I drove a car from Detroit in Michigan to the Canadian border, I saw so many wind turbines constantly moving around in the field as if to greet us with open hands. Converting the energy of the wind into electricity will surely contribute to lessening the crisis of the warming globe.

One day, when I went to “Jardin Botanique” (botanical gardens) in Montreal, I couldn’t find any printed guide map. When I asked for a guide map at the entrance guide, he said: “We don’t have any printed guide map. Please take a picture of it.” Even though it was inconvenient, I appreciated the intention to save resources. Surely, this eco-friendly movement will contribute to saving the earth.

Another notable point is the gradual decline of the marvelous church constructions. In the Archdiocese of Montreal, Catholics make up 70 percent of the population. There are 650 churches and among them, 205 are Catholic churches (170 parishes and 35 missions).

Church buildings with beautiful interiors and exteriors are found in every lane but, unfortunately, many churches are closed or used for other purposes. Even the crucifixes on top of some churches had been removed and the gorgeous beauty of the outer walls has been neglected.

One of the historic parishes, Sainte-Cunegonde Church in the street of Saint-Jacques, was handed over to the Korean migrant Catholic community established in 1979 in Montreal with the name of Mission Saint Martyrs Coreens.

Making use of the old construction is encouraging to see, even though it costs some amount of money for repair.

In spite of the gradual downfalls of considerable constructions, some parishes are still maintaining gorgeous and phenomenal features. Among them, I visited two national historic sites: L’Oratoire Saint-Joseph du Mont-Royal (Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal) and Basilique Notre Dame de Montreal (Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal), an exact replica of Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris in Gothic style.

Saint Joseph’s Oratory was built in 1924 by Brother Andre in honor of Saint Joseph. The remains of Saint Andre are in the church. Saint Andre is well-known for many miracles: those who were healed left their crutches in the church. Thanks to many miracles, pilgrims keep visiting these churches.

Another significant church is Mary Queen of the World Cathedral built between 1870 to 1894 in the style of the Italian Renaissance revival, inspired by Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The oldest church built over the ruins of an earlier chapel in 1771 is Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel in Old Montreal.

Solid and gorgeous stone architectures reveal the cultural influence of France and England. In the later 16 century, England and France explored Canada and they settled on the Atlantic coasts in the middle of the 17th century. After seven years of war, France handed over New France (Nouvelle-France) to England. And finally, in 1867, Canada became independent from England.

Being mingled in cultures, various migrants still come here to study or to settle. “Sun and moon, bless the Lord … All you, winds, bless the Lord…” (Daniel 3: 62,65)

캐나다의 두 모습

캐나다 동부 지역으로 선교 여행을 다니면서 가장 깊은 인상을 받은 것은 이 단풍잎 나라가 지구 환경을 파괴하지 않고 되살리기 위해 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다는 것이다.

미시간 주 디트로이트에서 캐나다 국경까지 운전하는 동안 나는 마치 활짝 펼친 두 손으로 우리를 반기듯 들판 한복판에서 끊임없이 돌아가는 수많은 풍력 터빈(발전기)을 보았다. 바람의 운동 에너지를 전력으로 변환시키는 일은 분명 지구 온난화의 위기를 줄이는 데 기여할 것이다.

어느 날 몬트리올 식물원에 갔는데 종이 가이드 맵을 찾을 수 없었다. 입구에 선 안내인에게 안내 지도를 달라고 했더니, 그는 “인쇄된 가이드 맵은 없습니다. 이 안내지를 찍어 가세요.” 하고 말했다. 불편하긴 했지만 자원을 아끼려는 의도가 고맙기만 했다. 이러한 친환경 운동은 분명 지구를 살리는 데 기여할 것이다.

또 다른 주목할 만한 점은 놀라울 만큼 아름다운 성당 건축물이 점점 문을 닫고 있다는 것이다. 몬트리올 대교구의 가톨릭 신자는 해당 인구의 70퍼센트에 이른다. 몬트리올에는 650여 개의 교회가 있는데, 그 가운데 205개가 가톨릭 성당이다(170개가 본당이고 35개는 공소).

골목마다 안팎으로 아름다운 성당 건물을 엿볼 수 있지만 안타깝게도 많은 성당이 문을 닫거나 다른 용도로 사용되고 있다. 심지어 성당 첨탑에 있던 십자가가 철거된 곳도 있고, 한때 아름다웠던 외벽이 방치된 채로 있다.

역사적 가치를 지닌 성당 가운데 하나인 생 자크 거리에 있는 생트 퀴네공드 성당은 1979년에 한인 가톨릭 공동체로 넘어가 이제 ‘한인 순교자 성인 성당’(Mission Catholique Saint Martyrs Coreens)이라고 불린다. 수리비가 좀 들긴 하지만 오래된 건축물을 그대로 활용하는 것은 바람직하다.

상당한 건축물이 점점 사라져가고 있음에도 몇몇 성당은 여전히 웅장하고 경이로운 모습을 그대로 유지하고 있다. 그 가운데 나는 역사적으로 유서 깊은 성당 두 곳을 순례했다. 성 요셉 대성당(L'Oratoire Saint-Joseph du Mont-Royal)과 고딕 양식으로 된 파리 노트르담 대성당을 그대로 재현한 몬트리올 노트르담 대성당(Basilique Notre Dame de Montreal)이다.

성 요셉 대성당은 1924년 앙드레 수사가 성 요셉을 기리기 위해 세웠다. 유해가 성당 안에 모셔져 있는 앙드레 성인은 많은 기적을 행한 것으로 알려져 있다. 치유받은 사람들은 목발과 지팡이를 성당에 두고 갔는데, 이처럼 수많은 기적 덕분에 순례자들이 끊임없이 이어진다.

또 다른 주요 성당은 로마 성 베드로 대성당에서 영감을 받아 이탈리아 르네상스 양식으로 1870년에서 1894년 사이에 지은 세계의 여왕 마리아 대성당이다. 1771년에 세운 성당의 폐허 위에 세운 가장 오래된 성당은 올드 몬트리올에 있는 노트르담 드 봉 세쿠르 성당이다.

견고하고 웅장한 석조 건축물은 프랑스와 영국의 문화적 영향을 드러낸다. 16세기 후반, 영국과 프랑스는 캐나다를 탐험하였으며 17세기 중반에 이르러 대서양 해안가에 자리잡게 되었다. 7년간의 전쟁 끝에 프랑스는 뉴프랑스(누벨프랑스)를 영국에 넘겨주었고, 1867년에 이르러 캐나다는 마침내 영국으로부터 독립했다.

다양한 이민자들이 뒤섞인 문화 가운데 공부하거나 정착하기 위해 꾸준히 캐나다를 찾아오고 있다. “해와 달아, 주님을 찬미하여라. 바람아, 모두 주님을 찬미하여라.”(다니엘 3,62.65)

Journey of Trials 시련의 여정

One day in 2002, while strolling around winding paths in a field, a certain melody came to my mind. Then, I kept singing the resounding melody again and again. In this way, I composed my song entitled “Journey of Trials.”

The title of the song originated from a book by Fr. James Alberione, the founder of our religious congregation.

As I kept singing, I realized that all of us are undergoing the same journey, which comprises various trials and tribulations in some form or other. Truly, we are constantly going through a process of ups and downs in many ways.

Since then, I sang “Journey of Trials” from time to time on special occasions. Now, when I go on mission trips to Canada, especially after Communion, during Mass in the Korean Catholic communities, I sing this song while playing the guitar. And I see many people appreciate the meaning of the song and they are touched by the lyrics. The story of “Journey of Trials” is as follows:

Just as Jesus needed 30 years,

just as the Israelites needed 40 years,

we also needed a long time.

All of this was the providence of God.

At one time, no matter how I looked at it,

it seemed like I was walking in place.

So, I wanted to sit down without thinking.

But looking back, it was all a gift from God.

A journey of trials that we must go through.

Now Christ will live in me.

When we meet again, I will ask one another.

How much do you resemble Jesus?

How much did you love with all your strength?

Many people shed tears while appreciating it. I am also always touched by this song whenever I sing it. Recently as I sang it at eight o’clock Mass on Sunday in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Toronto, and I could not help but have a lump in my throat.

Our lives are filled with amazing graces that lead to the theme of a popular allegorical poem titled “Footprints in the Sand.” It tells a story of a person who sees only one pair of footprints in the sand.

One night I dreamed a dream.

As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.

Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.

For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,

One belonging to me and one to my Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,

I looked back at the footprints in the sand.

I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,

especially at the very lowest and saddest times,

there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.

“Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,

You'd walk with me all the way.

But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,

there was only one set of footprints.

I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most, you would leave me.”

He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave you

Never, ever, during your trials and testings.

When you saw only one set of footprints,

It was then that I carried you.”

시련의 여정

2002년 어느 날, 들판의 구불구불한 길을 거닐다 어떤 멜로디가 떠올랐다. 그 이래 나는 내면에서 울려 퍼지는 그 멜로디를 거듭 흥얼거리곤 했다. 그러다가 ‘시련의 여정’이라는 노래를 지었다.

노래 제목은 우리 수도회의 창립자이신 야고보 알베리오네 신부님의 책에서 따온 것이다.

나는 노래를 거듭 부르면서 우리 모두가 그와 같은 여정을 걸어가고 있음을 깨달았다. 그 여정은 여러 모습의 시련과 고통을 담고 있다. 참으로 우리는 여러 면에서 끊임없이 오르락내리락 하는 부침(기복)을 겪는다.

그 이래 나는 특별한 날이 되면 때때로 ‘시련의 여정’을 불러왔다. 이제 캐나다 선교 여행을 하면서 한인성당을 방문하여 미사 드리는 가운데, 특히 영성체 후 특송으로 기타를 치며 이 노래를 부른다. 많은 사람이 가사를 듣고 그 의미를 음미하며 감동받는 것을 본다. ‘시련의 여정’ 이야기는 다음과 같다.

예수님에게 30년이란 세월이 필요했듯이

이스라엘 백성에게 40년이 필요했듯이

우리에게도 기나긴 세월이 필요했어요

이 모든 것 하느님의 섭리였어요

한때는 아무리 봐도 제자리걸음 같아

아무 생각 없이 주저앉고 싶었지만은

뒤돌아보면 그 모든 것 하느님 선물

반드시 거쳐야 할 시련의 여정

이제는 그리스도 내 안에 사시리라

다시 만나면 서로에게 물어보리라

얼마만큼 예수님을 닮았느냐고

얼마만큼 온 힘 다해 사랑했냐고

많은 사람이 이 노래를 감상하며 눈물을 흘린다. 나 또한 이 노래를 부를 때마다 늘 감격스럽기만 하다. 최근 토론토 예수 성심 성당에서 8시 주일미사를 드리며 이 노래를 불렀는데, 어김없이 목이 메었다.

우리 삶은 놀라운 은총으로 가득하다. 그 은총은 “모래 위의 발자국”이라는 널리 알려진 우화시의 주제로 이어진다. 이 시는 모래 위에 찍힌 한 사람의 발자국을 바라본 어느 사람의 체험을 들려준다.

어느 날 밤 저는 꿈을 꾸었습니다.

저는 꿈속에서 주님과 함께 해변을 따라 걷고 있었습니다.

바로 그때 어두운 하늘을 가로질러

제가 지나온 삶의 순간들이 펼쳐졌습니다.

장면마다 모래 위에는 두 사람의 발자국이 있었습니다.

그 가운데 하나는 제 것이고 다른 하나는 주님의 발자국이었습니다.

제 인생의 마지막 장면이 제 앞에 스쳐 지나갔을 때

저는 모래 위에 펼쳐진 발자국들을 되돌아보았습니다.

제 삶의 길을 따라 여러 차례, 특히 가장 우울하고 슬플 때

모래 위에는 한 사람의 발자국만 남아 있는 것을 보았습니다.

그 사실이 저를 몹시 괴롭혀 저는 주님께 여쭈었습니다.

“주님, 제가 당신을 따르기로 마음먹었을 때

당신은 언제나 저와 함께 걸으리라고 말씀하셨습니다.

그런데 제 삶에서 가장 슬프고 힘든 시기에

한 사람의 발자국만 있는 것을 보았습니다.

제가 당신을 가장 필요로 할 때

당신이 왜 저를 떠나셨는지 이해할 수 없습니다.”

그러자 주님께서 이렇게 대답하셨습니다.

“내 소중한 아이야, 나는 너를 무척 사랑하기에 결코 너를 떠난 적이 없다.

나는 절대로 너를 버려 두지 않는다. 네가 겪은 시련과 고통 가운데

모래 위에 한 사람의 발자국만 있는 것은

내가 너를 업고 갔기 때문이다.”

Making a change 변화

Can one person make a change? Sure, each of us can change society. As in the book "L'homme qui plantait des arbes" ("The Man Who Planted Trees") written in 1953 by Jean Giono (1895-1970), one person can do something different and marvelous by being inspired and led by the Holy Spirit.

In the above-mentioned short story, Elzeard Bouffier brought a deserted valley back to life by planting one hundred thousand acorn trees for three years. The author, Jean Giono, even declined to receive any royalties for his story. He just granted it for free to anyone.

Sister Gemma Hong is such a person. For over 30 years, she has devoted herself to her ongoing mission trips to North America.

In religious life, we take turns doing certain missions. The officially given terms last for about 3 years, 5 years or 10 years in general, but some missions are sustained by one person for a longer period of time, depending on the needs of the apostolate. Doing one thing for over 30 years is enough to make a person an expert in that field.

The Korean mission, with book exhibits in the United States, started in 1989 with the initiative of Sister Susanna Yu and Sister Gemma Hong. Since then, Korean Pauline Sisters have visited the United States irregularly for the purpose of diffusion and animation up to now. Junior Sisters came to the United States in 2012 and 2015 for fruitful apostolic experiences.

In 2013, Sr. Gemma was transferred from the Korean Province to the American Province. Then, the Korean mission in the United States was approved by the General Government of our congregation in Rome. Thus, the Korean mission was able to undergo constantly with the goal of letting the light of the living words of God reach out to each Korean family in the hope of giving joy, peace and consolation.

However, the mission was suspended by the outbreak of COVID-19 from 2020 to 2022. Despite all the difficult situations, Sr. Gemma didn't give up her hopeful dreams; she organized eight book clubs with the help of Zoom.

Her original intention to make book clubs was in order to express gratitude to collaborators and to give them hope, joy, peace and consolation through sincere sharing. As she consulted all those who supported Korean book exhibits while staying at their houses, they became willing to join the book clubs.

She is always happy to select 10 books to read throughout the year, and each member devours one book a month to then share their thoughts and impressions through Zoom. Book clubs appeal to people because the first generation of immigrants can read and speak the Korean language.

Approximately more than 2 million Koreans are spread out across the United States: 10 percent of them are Catholics while 61 percent are Protestants, 6 percent are Buddhists and 23 percent follow other religions.

Thanks to the hard work and efforts of the first generation of Korean immigrants, the second generations, who were born and educated well in the United States, are more adapted to the American way of thinking and culture. Therefore, Sr. Gemma does her best to give spiritual food to Korean immigrants through book exhibits.

변화

과연 한 사람이 변화를 불러일으킬 수 있을까? 그렇다, 우리 한 사람 한 사람은 사회에 변화를 불러일으킬 수 있다. 장 지오노(Jean Giono, 1895-1970)가 1953년에 쓴 “나무를 심은 사람(L'homme qui plantait des arbes)”에서처럼 한 사람이 성령의 영감에 따라 나아가면 무언가 새롭고도 놀라운 일을 할 수 있다.

“나무를 심은 사람”에 나오는 엘제아르 부피에(Elzeard Bouffier)는 3년 동안 10만 그루의 도토리 나무를 심어 황량한 골짜기에 활기를 불어넣었다. 저자 장 지오노는 자신이 쓴 이야기의 인세를 받지 않았고 누구에게나 저작권을 무상으로 허락했다.

홍 젬마 수녀님 또한 그러한 분이다. 30년이 넘도록 젬마 수녀님은 한결같이 북미주 선교 여정에 헌신해 왔다.

수도생활을 하는 우리는 교대로 특수 사명을 수행한다. 공식적으로 주어지는 임기는 대개 3년이나 5년 또는 10년이지만 어떤 사명은 사도직의 필요에 따라 더 오랜 기간 동안 한 사람이 수행한다. 한 가지 일을 30년이 넘도록 하다 보면 그 분야의 전문가가 되기 마련이다.

미주 한인 교포들을 대상으로 하는 도서선교는 1989년 유 수산나 수녀님과 홍 젬마 수녀님에 의해 시작되었다. 그 이래 한국 바오로딸 수녀들은 지금에 이르기까지 도서선교를 하기 위해 이따금 미국을 방문해 왔다. 유기서원자들도 풍요로운 사도직 체험을 하기 위해 2012년과 2015년에 미국에 온 적이 있다.

2013년, 젬마 수녀님은 한국 관구에서 미국 관구로 옮겼고, 마침내 미주 한인 선교는 로마 성바오로딸수도회 총본부의 인가를 받았다. 그리하여 한인 선교는 살아 있는 하느님 말씀의 빛이 모든 한인 가정에 퍼져 기쁨과 평화와 위로를 주고자 하는 목표 아래 꾸준히 지속되었다.

그런데 2020년부터 2022년까지 코로나바이러스-19가 발생하여 선교를 계속 이어나갈 수 없었다. 이처럼 어려운 상황 속에서도 젬마 수녀님은 희망찬 꿈을 버리지 않고 줌(Zoom)을 활용하여 8개의 북클럽을 조직하여 진행했다.

북클럽을 만든 원래 의도는 협력자들에게 고마움을 전하며 진지한 나눔을 통해 희망과 기쁨, 평화와 위로를 주기 위한 것이었다. 젬마 수녀님은 도서선교를 후원하는 협력자들과 상의한 끝에 모두 자기가 사는 집에서 줌으로 하는 북클럽에 기꺼이 가담하게 되었다.

젬마 수녀님은 행복한 마음으로 1년 동안 읽을 책 10권을 한결같이 선정한다. 북클럽 멤버들은 한 달에 한 권씩 책을 읽은 다음 Zoom으로 자신의 생각과 느낌을 함께 나눈다. 1세대 이주민들이 여전히 한글을 읽고 말할 수 있어 북클럽은 사람들에게 호소력을 지닌다.

200만 명이 넘는 한국인들이 미국 전역에 흩어져 있는데, 이들 가운데 10퍼센트는 가톨릭이고 61퍼센트는 개신교 신자들이며, 6퍼센트는 불교 신도들이며 나머지 23퍼센트는 기타 여러 종교를 믿는다.

1세대 한인 교포들이 기울인 수고와 노력 덕분에 미국에서 태어나 교육을 잘 받은 2세대들은 미국식 사고방식과 문화에 잘 적응하고 있다. 그래서 젬마 수녀님은 도서선교를 통해 한인 이주민들에게 영적 양식을 주려고 최선을 다한다.

바오로딸 도서선교를 통해 이주민들에게 다가가는 것은 미국과 캐나다 전역의 선교 여정에 활기를 불러일으킨다.

“얼마나 아름다운가, 산 위에 서서 기쁜 소식을 전하는 이의 저 발!”(이사 52,7)

Sister Faustina 파우스티나 수녀

God reveals his dynamic vitality through new sprouts and colorful buds in spring. The trees along the streets bring forth the freshest green leaves day in and day out. In their tiny and fragile sprouts and buds, God reveals his lively presence.

The extraordinary mercy and grace of God are revealed not only through sensitive nature but also through the simple and little people.

The life of Sister Faustina also testifies to the marvelous and mysterious ways of providence. Sister Faustina was born with the name Helena Kowalska in Poland on Aug. 25, 1905, as the third of 10 children to a poor and religious family.

Since childhood, she loved to pray, work hard, and obey her parents. She was also sensitive to the poor, for she was aware of the presence of divine mercy in them.

At age 7, she attended the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and felt a calling to religious life. Attending the elementary school for the third grade only, she wanted to join a convent, but her parents didn't give her permission.

At age 16, she left home to work as a housekeeper in order to support herself and to help her parents as well.

At age 19, she experienced her first vision of the Suffering Christ and departed for Warsaw to approach several convents, but she was rejected every time due to her poor appearance.

Finally, the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy accepted her on the condition that she could pay for her own religious habit.

On April 30, 1926, at age 20, she took her first religious vows with the religious name of Sr. Maria Faustina of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Then, she was sent to various communities as a cook, gardener and porter.

At age 24, she arrived in Plock, Poland but she became so weak that she was sent away to rest. Several months later, she returned to the convent.

On Feb. 22, 1931, Jesus who presented himself as the King of Divine Mercy visited her. He was wearing a white garment with red and pale rays coming from his heart. From then on, she became the apostle and secretary of God's mercy. As a doer of mercy, she was most attentive and merciful to others.

On May 1, 1933, she took her final vows and willingly offered her personal sufferings in union with Jesus to atone for the sins of others. At the same time, she brought joy and peace to others and encouraged them to totally trust in Jesus.

Contemplating mercy in the words of God and her daily activities, she was eager to perform her tasks faithfully. She was very recollected, natural, serene and kind to others.

The message of mercy that she received from Jesus is now being spread throughout the world. Her diary, "Divine Mercy in my Soul," translated into more than 20 languages, has become the handbook for devotion to Divine Mercy.

Sister Maria Faustina passed away in Krakow at age 33 on Oct. 5, 1938. She was beatified on April 18, 1993, and canonized on April 30, 2000, by Pope John Paul II. As the patron saint of God's Mercy, her feast day is celebrated on Oct. 5.

"Jesus, I trust in you" was her lifelong refrain.

파우스티나 수녀

하느님은 봄에 솟아오르는 새싹과 형형색색의 꽃봉오리를 통해 활기찬 생명력을 드러내신다. 거리마다 늘어선 나무들은 날마다 가장 푸르른 잎새를 선보인다. 작고 연약한 새싹과 꽃봉오리에서 하느님은 생생한 당신 현존을 드러내신다.

하느님의 놀라운 자비와 은총은 민감한 자연은 물론 소박하고 보잘것없는 이들을 통해 드러난다.

파우스티나 수녀의 삶 또한 놀랍고 신비로운 하느님 섭리의 길을 증언한다. 파우스티나 수녀는 1905년 8월 25일 폴란드의 가난하고 신심 깊은 가정에서 10자녀 가운데 셋째로 태어났다. 어렸을 때 이름은 헬레나 코발스카였다.

어린 시절부터 파우스티나 수녀는 즐겨 기도했고 열심히 일했으며 부모님께 순종했을 뿐 아니라 가난한 이들을 섬세하게 대했다. 그들 안에 계신 하느님의 자비를 깨달았기 때문이다.

7살 때 성체조배를 했고 수도 생활에 대한 부르심을 느꼈다. 초등학교 3학년쯤 되어 수녀원에 들어가기를 바랐지만 부모님은 허락하지 않으셨다.

16살에는 스스로 독립하여 부모님께 도움을 드리기 위해 집을 떠나 가사도우미로 일했다.

19살에는 고통받으시는 그리스도를 환시로 처음 본 다음 바르샤바로 가 몇몇 수녀원 문을 두드렸지만 가난한 차림새로 인해 매번 거절당했다. 마침내 자비의 성모 수녀회는 그녀가 자신의 수도복 비용을 지불한다는 조건으로 받아들였다.

1926년 4월 30일, 20살의 나이에 그녀는 성체의 마리아 파우스티나라는 수도명으로 첫 서원을 했다. 그런 다음 여러 분원 공동체에 파견되어 요리사, 정원사, 문지기로 봉사했다.

24살에 폴란드 프워츠크에 도착할 무렵 몸이 쇠약해져 수녀원을 나가 쉬어야 했으나 몇 달 후 수녀원으로 되돌아왔다.

1931년 2월 22일, 자신이 하느님 자비의 임금이라고 하신 예수님이 그녀를 찾아오셨다. 흰옷을 입고 계신 예수님의 성심에서 붉은색과 흰색 빛줄기가 퍼져 나왔다. 그 이래 파우스티나 수녀는 하느님 자비의 사도이자 비서가 되었다. 자비를 베푸는 사람으로서 파우스티나 수녀는 주변 사람들을 극진하게 대하며 자비를 베풀었다.

1933년 5월 1일, 파우스티나 수녀는 종신 서원을 했고 사람들의 죄를 보속하기 위해 예수님과 하나 되어 자신의 고통을 기꺼이 바쳤다. 또한 사람들에게 기쁨과 평화를 가져다주었고 그들이 예수님을 온전히 신뢰하며 의탁하도록 독려했다.

파우스티나 수녀는 하느님 말씀과 일상 가운데 드러나는 자비를 묵상하면서 자신에게 맡겨진 일을 충실하게 수행해냈다. 또한 깊이 잠심하여 묵상했고 자연스러웠고 평온했으며 사람들에게 친절했다.

파우스티나 수녀가 예수님한테서 받은 자비의 메시지는 이제 온 세상 곳곳에 스며들고 있다. 20개가 넘는 언어로 번역된 일기 "내 영혼 안에 계신 하느님의 자비"는 하느님 자비 신심 지침서가 되었다.

마리아 파우스티나 수녀는 1938년 10월 5일 33살의 나이로 크라쿠프에서 선종했다. 교황 요한 바오로 2세에 의해 1993년 4월 18일 시복되었고 2000년 4월 30일 시성되었다. 하느님 자비의 수호성인인 파우스티나 수녀의 축일은 10월 5일이다.

"예수님, 저는 당신께 의탁합니다"는 파우스티나 수녀가 평생에 걸쳐 바친 기도문이었다.
