At each World Youth Day (WYD), patron saints are chosen as models of faith for young people. Based on the event’s spiritual themes of truth, love and peace, they are expected to offer spiritual guidance through the witness of their lives and spirituality.

For WYD Seoul 2027, the selection process of patron saints began in late 2024. The selection team included a nationwide survey of young people, youth ministers and pastoral workers, followed by a review of candidates and deliberation by the Local Organizing Committee.

Following the selection, a group of young volunteers dedicated two months to researching the lives and spirituality of the five patron saints. Through prayer, discussion and shared reflection, the team prepared a dedicated prayer and a representative symbol for each saint, seeking to express the distinctive witness that each saint offers to young people today.

For WYD Seoul 2027, the five patron saints are Saint John Paul II (1920-2005), Saint Andrew Kim Taegon (1821-1846) and his companions, Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917), Saint Josephine Bakhita (1869-1947) and Saint Carlo Acutis (1991-2006).

Spanning continents and generations, each saint inspires young people and offers a path to live faith in daily life. Through the lives of saints, young people are invited to see that holiness is not a distant ideal but a way to fix their gaze on Christ and to respond generously to His call.

Saint John Paul II, whose feast day is Oct. 22, is the founder and the father of WYD. He established the event in 1985, after seeing more than 300,000 young people gather at the Vatican for the International Jubilee of Youth.

His love for young people, his resilience in suffering and his emphasis on family and the dignity of human life touched many people.

At the 2002 WYD in Toronto, he said that he wanted to realize “a powerful moment in which the young people of the world could meet Christ, who is eternally young, and could learn from him how to be bearers of the Gospel to other young people.”

John Paul II was born in Poland in 1920. In his early years, he endured the sorrow of losing his family, World War II and the oppression of Nazi occupation. Amid these trials, he nurtured his priestly vocation in an underground seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1946.

He served as auxiliary bishop and archbishop of Krakow, and took part in the Second Vatican Council, contributing to the Church’s path of renewal and dialogue. Elected the 264th Pope in 1978, he proclaimed the Gospel through pastoral visits to 129 countries and, in 1985, founded World Youth Day, inviting young people to become one in faith.

After surviving an assassination attempt in St. Peter’s Square in 1981, he testified that he had been protected by the maternal hand of Our Lady and went on to forgive his attacker, leaving a profound witness to mercy and reconciliation. He passed away in 2005 and was canonized in 2014.

세계청년대회(WYD)가 열릴 때마다 젊은이들을 위한 신앙의 본보기가 되는 ‘수호성인’을 선정한다. 2027년 세계청년대회의 영성 주제인 진리와 사랑과 평화에 부합하는 인물들을 중심으로 선정된 수호성인들은 저마다 살아낸 삶과 영성을 통해 젊은이들에게 영적 지침을 제시할 것이다.

2027년 서울 세계청년대회를 위한 수호성인 선정 과정은 2024년 말에 시작되었다. 수호성인 선정팀은 청년과 청소년 사목 관계자와 교육자들을 대상으로 전국 설문조사를 실시한 다음 후보군 검토와 조직위원회의 심의를 거쳤다.

수호성인을 선정한 다음 청년 자원봉사자 그룹은 두 달 동안 다섯 수호성인의 삶과 영성에 대해 연구했으며, 기도와 토론, 성찰 나눔을 통해 각 성인에게 전구를 비는 기도문을 작성하고 각 성인의 특징을 드러내는 상징물을 뽑아 오늘날 젊은이들에게 각 성인이 전하는 고유한 증거를 담아내고자 했다.

2027년 서울 세계청년대회의 수호성인은 성 요한 바오로 2세(1920-2005), 성 김대건 안드레아(1821-1846)와 동료 순교자들, 성 프란체스카 하비에르 카브리니(1850-1917), 성 요세피나 바키타(1869-1947), 그리고 성 카를로 아쿠티스(1991-2006)다.

대륙과 세대를 아우르는 이 성인들은 젊은이들에게 영감을 주며 일상생활 가운데 신앙을 실천하는 길을 제시한다. 젊은이들은 성인들의 삶을 통해 거룩함이란 멀리 떨어진 이상이 아니라 그리스도께 눈길을 두고 그분의 부르심에 관대하게 응답하는 삶의 방식임을 깨닫는다.

10월 22일이 축일인 성 요한 바오로 2세는 세계청년대회(WYD)의 창시자이자 아버지다. 그는 1985년, 바티칸에 30만 명이 넘는 젊은이들이 ‘세계 청년들을 위한 희년’을 맞아 모인 것을 계기로 세계청년대회를 창설했다.

젊은이들을 향한 그의 사랑, 그가 고통 속에서 보여준 굳건함, 그리고 가정과 인간 생명의 존엄성에 대한 그의 강조는 많은 이에게 깊은 감동을 주었다.

2002년 토론토에서 열린 세계청년대회에서 교황 바오로 2세는 전 세계 젊은이들이 영원히 젊으신 그리스도를 만나 다른 젊은이들에게 복음을 전하는 이들이 되는 길을 그리스도에게서 배우는 “강력한 순간”을 실현하고 싶다고 말했다.

1920년 폴란드에서 태어난 요한 바오로 2세는 어린 시절에 가족을 잃은 슬픔과 제2차세계대전, 그리고 나치의 점령 아래 억압을 견뎌내야 했다. 이러한 시련 속에서도 그는 지하 신학교에서 사제 성소를 키워 나갔고, 1946년 사제가 되었다.

그는 크라쿠프의 보좌 주교와 대주교로 봉사했으며, 제2차바티칸공의회에 참여하여 교회의 쇄신과 대화의 여정에 기여했다. 1978년 제264대 교황으로 선출된 그는 129개국을 사목 방문하며 복음을 선포했고, 1985년 세계청년대회를 만들어 젊은이들이 신앙 안에서 하나 되도록 초대했다.

1981년 성 베드로 광장에서 암살 시도를 겪고 살아남은 그는, 자신이 성모님의 어머니 같은 손길로 보호받았다고 고백했다. 또한 자신을 공격했던 사람을 용서함으로써 자비와 화해에 관한 깊은 증거를 남겼다. 그는 2005년에 선종했으며, 2014년 성인품에 올랐다.
