Leaving one’s comfort zones 자신의 안전지대를 떠나

Pope Francis always encouraged us to leave our comfort zones and go to the frontier. The frontier means the geographical, cultural and existential peripheries where people are forgotten, excluded or mistreated — the poor, the marginalized, migrants, refugees and the sick.

Every Christian is called to step outside to be an active, outgoing missionary. Even the religious congregations (orders) have become very attentive to the needs of those who live on the frontier these days.

As I was transferred to Seoul, I was called to join the JPIC Commission as well. Wholly dedicated to the Pauline editorial team, I may not be involved in this activity full-time; nevertheless, I was invited to participate in the JPIC meeting once a month.

I accepted all those callings, for I felt that the Lord inspires me to broaden my awareness of all that has been happening in society.

JPIC stands for justice, peace and integrity of creation. In short, it is a practical and active faith movement for healing and saving the world.

JPIC has two Kakao Talk group chats: one is for 44 members of JPIC in Korea, and the other includes more religious sisters.

Belonging to the Association of Major Superiors of Religious Women in Korea, which was established in 1962, JPIC was born to meet the demands of the times. Under JPIC, there are various committees, focusing on Gospel life, social justice, life and peace, human rights, formation, among others.

Before the name change to JPIC, it was named Life and Peace Committee. Now, JPIC carries out all the activities that Life and Peace Committee did 10 years ago. It also speaks out against nuclear power use and pushes for renewable energy, and pursues activities in line with the advocacy of Talitha Kum, or the International Network of Consecrated Life against Human Trafficking.

Keeping in mind the message of going to the frontier, the religious sisters and brothers, priests and monks make efforts to support the socially vulnerable while correcting unjust structures or systems and building the right relationships for the fulfillment of justice. They visit the slum area, preparing snacks, fruits and so on. They are also concerned about the human rights of migrant workers.

Another activity is related to social violence and conflict. Those who are dedicated to peace make efforts to realize reconciliation and solidarity among people. In solidarity with those who are suffering, some of them actively participate in protests, sit-ins, signature campaigns, climate action movements and the court judgment process.

The third main activity is about caring for the destroyed natural environment. Those who are involved in pursuing the integrity of creation make efforts to put into practice ecological spirituality. They study together to be ecological activists and work for the protection of the natural environment.

JPIC originally grew within the ecumenical movement of the mid-to-late 20th century, including the World Council of Churches and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches.

Then, with the joint participation of Catholics and Protestants, the concept of “ecological environment protection” has been added to existing issues of social justice and peace.

Based on the good intention of those who are willing to uphold justice and to love goodness, human rights advocacy and environmental protection activities go on around the world.

“You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

자신의 안전지대를 떠나 Leaving one’s comfort zones

프란치스코 교황은 언제나 우리 자신이 안주하는 안전지대를 떠나 '변방'으로 가라고 격려했다. 여기서 변방이란 사람들, 특히 가난한 이들, 소외된 이들, 이주민, 난민, 환자들이 잊히고, 배제되거나 부당한 대우를 받는 지리적, 문화적, 실존적 변두리를 뜻한다.

모든 그리스도인은 울타리 밖으로 나가 능동적이고 적극적인 선교사가 되라는 부르심을 받는다. 요즘에는 수도회들 또한 변방에 사는 이들의 필요에 더 깊은 관심을 기울이고 있다.

나는 소임 이동이 되어 서울로 올라오면서 JPIC위원회에 가담하게 되었다. 바오로딸 편집팀에 전념해야 하기에 위원회 활동에 전적으로 투신할 수는 없지만, 한 달에 한 번 JPIC 모임에 참여하게 되었다.

사회에서 일어나는 모든 일에 깨어 자아인식을 넓히도록 주님께서 이끄신다고 느꼈기에 나는 이 모든 부르심을 받아들였다.

JPIC란 정의Justice, 평화Peace, 창조질서 보전Integrity of Creation의 첫 글자를 뜻한다. 한마디로 말해, JPIC는 세상을 치유하고 구원하기 위해 실천적이고 능동적으로 움직이는 신앙 운동이다.

JPIC는 두 개의 카카오톡 단톡방을 운영하는데, 하나는 국내 JPIC 회원 44명을 위한 것이고, 다른 하나는 더 많은 수녀들이 참여하며 연대하는 단톡방이다.

1962년에 설립된 한국천주교 여자수도회 장상연합회에 속한 JPIC는 시대적 요구에 부응하기 위해 탄생했다. JPIC에는 복음적 삶, 사회 정의, 생명과 평화, 인권, 양성 등을 중점적으로 다루는 여러 분과 위원회가 있다.

JPIC로 명칭이 바뀌기 전에는 '생명평화위원회'라고 불렸는데, 현재 JPIC는 10년 전에 생명평화위원회가 수행하던 모든 활동을 이어가고 있다. 또한 원자력 발전 사용에 반대하고 재생 에너지 도입을 촉구하며, 인신매매 반대를 위한 국제 봉헌생활자 네트워크인 '탈리타 쿰'의 활동 방향에 발맞춰 다양한 활동을 펼치고 있다.

변방으로 나아가라는 메시지를 마음에 새기며, 수도자와 사제들과 수사들은 사회적 약자를 지원하는 한편, 정의 실현을 위해 불의한 구조나 제도를 바로잡고 올바른 관계를 구축하고자 노력한다. 그들은 간식이나 과일 등을 준비해 빈민 지역을 방문하며, 이주 노동자들의 인권 문제에도 관심을 기울이고 있다.

또 다른 활동은 사회적 폭력과 갈등에 관련된다. 이처럼 평화를 위해 헌신하는 이들은 사람들 간의 화해와 연대를 이루려고 노력한다. 그들 가운데 일부는 고통받는 사람들과 연대하며 시위, 농성, 서명 운동, 기후 행동, 사법 절차 등에 적극 참여한다.

세 번째 주요 활동은 파괴된 자연환경을 돌보는 일이다. ‘창조질서 보전’을 추구하는 이들은 생태적 영성을 실천하려고 마음 쓰며 노력한다. 이들은 생태 활동가로서의 소양을 갖추기 위해 함께 공부하며 자연환경보호를 위해 활동한다.

. JPIC는 본래 세계교회협의회(WCC)와 세계개혁교회연맹(WARC) 등 20세기 중후반에 일어난 에큐메니컬(초교파) 운동의 일환으로 태동했다.

이후 가톨릭과 개신교가 공동 참여하면서 기존의 사회 정의와 평화 문제에 ‘생태환경보호’ 개념이 더해지게 되었다.

정의를 수호하고 선을 사랑하고자 기꺼이 투신하는 이들의 선한 지향을 바탕으로 온 세계에서 인권옹호와 환경보호활동이 이어지고 있다.

“사람아, 무엇이 착한 일이고 주님께서 너에게 요구하시는 것이 무엇인지 그분께서 너에게 이미 말씀하셨다. 공정을 실천하고 신의를 사랑하며 겸손하게 네 하느님과 함께 걷는 것이 아니냐?”(미카 6,8)
