‘Jigwanseoga’
Sometimes, somebody does what I wish to do and what I can’t do by myself. It is always encouraging to see that somebody with goodwill does something for the public good.
One day, as I passed by the Traditional Cultural Contents Museum located in Ungbu Park in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, a newly built house drew my attention. Under the traditionally tiled roof, a sign engraved with the words “Ji-gwan-seo-ga” in the Chinese language was displayed. “Ji-gwan” means to “pause and see or look wide” and “seo-ga” means "stacks or bookshelves." The term implies stopping for a moment, standing up straight, looking broadly inside and out, and reading a book.
Out of curiosity, I entered the long and big house and saw a book cafe on the right side near the entrance. The whole two-story space was equipped with long wooden bookshelves, filled with various books. Chairs and tables were awaiting people in open rooms with floor heating. Various books on the health of the body and the mind were displayed on the shelves surrounding the walls. The books were not for sale but for reading on the spot only.
A cafe keeper said that the Humanities Expansion Center at Seoul National University and Humanities 360 provide book curation and content production. The open library space creation project was planned by Platon Academy, with SK Group providing financial support. For this library project, the local government provides idle space in its district. With good intentions, idle space turned out to be a good space that stimulates thinking, contemplation, dialogue and culture, while having a cup of tea or coffee.
At present, there are eight of these complex cultural spaces providing some moments of pause and rest across the country: six of them are located in the Ulsan area, one at Goethe Village in Yeoju and one at Ungbu Park. Each Jigwanseoga has a unique theme, and the theme of Andong is how to take care of the body and the mind.
Jigwanseoga invites us to stop for a moment despite our busy schedules filled with digital content, artificial intelligence programs and automation processes. It inspires us to open our eyes with wisdom and look around the world. It promotes harmony and balance of the body and the mind. Those who have prepared for Jigwanseoga believe that the sound mind makes the sound body.
Long ago, we talked about intelligence, virtue and physical, but nowadays we think of it in a reverse way: physical, virtue and intelligence. Physical matters come first to be concerned about.
We are used to living in a hurry without being attentive to the basic needs of our body and mind. As a result, various unexpected diseases are attacking the human body nowadays, and many people are looking for healing and rest.
To provide people with healing spaces and pleasant environments, Andong City has a vision of becoming a sustainable garden city, expanding green spaces, parks and maintaining facilities. The planning project of remodeling Andong as a sustainable garden city was chosen for the Green Infrastructure Expansion Competition Project early this year and won a large sum of funds. So, new development is going on here and there to attract more tourists.
May more people visit Andong during the Andong International Mask Dance Festival to be held between September and October every year. Let us hope for a better environment with zero carbon!

Jigwanseoga

Hopeful person
There was a time in which hope was not seen in my life. Hope was hidden because of negative expressions. Discouraging comments and evaluations seemed to take away hope in my heart, but I was not discouraged at all because I had faith. I was calm and peaceful. I was able to be grateful for what I am. Reflecting on the situation, I realized that hope comes from faith. Hope doesn’t come from me. Hope comes from faith.
Courageous people witness that hope comes from faith. As pilgrims of hope, we are going on our journey toward faith, truth, joy and eternal life. We are essentially hopeful human beings. We are called to be human beings of hope.
“Hoffnungsmensch” (Homo Sperans), written by Steffen Kern, German pastor, journalist and author, was published in 2023, and its Korean translation was recently published by Pauline in 2025. With inspiring episodes and stories of hope, it invites us to reflect on hope in our daily lives and to begin again.
Kern invites us to look at the world: Over 7 million people passed away due to the coronavirus. Over 80 million refugees were displaced around the world. So many cases of sexual abuse by priests, gender issues, forest fires, wars in several countries and serious political confrontations continue to disturb us. In line with these gloomy and dark situations, global climate change is progressing day by day as if to warn the end of the world. Various crises befall us day in and day out.
Facing all these struggling realities, some people keep asking such questions: Is heaven valid? Where is the Kingdom of Hope? Will heaven come to an end? Do we still have hope? Is God alive? Can the churches keep the promise of God? Can we begin again?
Despite all the uncertain situations, Kern firmly believes that world history is “not a history of downfall but a history of God and salvation. Therefore, it is a history of hope.”
Surely, hope comes from faith. Hope always inspires us to move forward and do something for a better future. Hope lets us expect something and leads us to go beyond the limitations. Hope motivates us and enlightens the power of life. Hope inspires us to trust in the providence of God and rely on the possibility of God.
With hope, we are willing to do something possible, hopeful and positive. A hopeful person is not self-centered, but he looks at others and listens to them. A hopeful person recognizes and accepts. A hopeful person sees the world with different eyes because he lives with a broad horizon.
“A hopeful person has both feet on the ground. He has a piece of heaven in his heart. He is on the ground and in heaven at the same time.”
All these inspiring stories of hope remind me of “L’Homme qui Marche 1” (life-size walking man) made in 1960 by Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti (1901-66). Like this walking man, we are constantly walking with hope. Going beyond all the ups and downs, we walk in hope, with hope and for hope. We walk on and on with joy and gratitude.
“Affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us." (Romans 5:3-5)

Hopeful person

Walking uphill
“The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace!” (Numbers 6:24-26) The Lord gave these blessings to Moses so that he could bless the Israelites as well. These heavenly blessings are still forwarded to us with the help of many people with goodwill.
Near our main congregation at Gangbuk District in Seoul, there are several doctors (ophthalmologist, ear & nose & throat specialist, dentist, orthopedic doctor…) who are willing to provide us with free consultations and treatments. I really appreciate their presence and goodwill to do something for others. Unless I have to go to a large general hospital, I prefer to go to a small, nearby local medical center.
After coming back to Korea, I went to a nearby surgeon to check my health condition. As a preventive measure against possible herniated discs, especially between the fourth and fifth vertebrae, he advised me to walk uphill. So, when I arrived at Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, which name means "a place of comfort in the East," I began to climb a nearby mountain called Mount Yeongnam which is only 246 meters high.
Catholic Sangji College, founded in 1970 by three religious Sisters of the Christian Doctrine (Sr. Celine Knauf, Sr. Angelin Kellen and Sr. Agnes Pompermaier), is surrounded by Mount Yeongnam, like a folding screen.
Mount Yeongnam is known as the main mountain and the best place in Andong because it contains the history and scenery of the city — in the same way that a mother embraces her children. It is such a good geomantic site, a source of positive energy.
Standing on the peak of this mountain, I can overlook the densely packed city of Andong and the gently flowing Nakdong River. Around this mountain, there are cultural and historical sites such as Imcheonggak House (birthplace of independence activist Seokju Lee Sang-ryong, 1858-1932), Seven-story Brick Pagoda at Beopheungsa Temple Site (national treasure no. 16) and Sinsedong Mural Village with various illustrations on the walls.
In the middle of the mural village, a book cafe named “Again, here” especially provides a colorful and impressive experience.
It takes about 30 minutes to go up to the peak of Mount Yeongnam from our accommodations. The climb is very steep, but the sunlight makes it good and peaceful for walking barefoot.
It is such a joy to go up to its peak barefoot every day. It is a blessing to take a walk when the sun shines on every corner of the earth, in the forest and among traditional Korean houses.
Many of us are used to working hard while sitting on a chair in front of the computer. As a result, our working attitude causes wrist arthritis or back pain. Thus, it is necessary to do some stretching or exercise regularly. Above anything else, taking good care of our bodies is fundamental and necessary because we can’t do anything well without a healthy body.
I believe that our body is the holy temple where the Holy Spirit resides, as the first letter to Corinthians says: “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? … the temple of God, which you are, is holy.” (3:16-17) So, let us take good care of ourselves. Let us enjoy walking uphill.

Finding faith in Andong
I was recently assigned to the smallest Pauline community in Andong, a city often called the capital of moral culture, known for its 40 Confucian academies that instill a scholarly spirit. I enjoy Andong’s serene surroundings, with its pine tree-lined paths, traditional tile roofs, and rich cultural and historical sites, all adding to the moral spirit that flows along the Nakdong River.
Our Pauline Books & Media Center is located near the History Museum of the Diocese of Andong just around Mokseongdong Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Our presence in Andong reminds me of the recommendation of Fr. Giacomo Alberione, the founder of the Daughters of St. Paul, who used to say: “Always begin from the manger!”
Fr. Alberione always emphasized beginning from the crib. What does it mean by starting with the manger? According to him, it means to live humbly with a spirit of poverty while totally relying on the Providence of God.
The mystery of salvation began in the humble manger of Bethlehem, symbolizing the frontier. A small, simple, and modest presence can have profound significance, reminding us that even the smallest beginnings can lead to great transformations.
In Korea, there are 3 Catholic Archdioceses (Seoul, Daegu, and Gwangju) and 12 Dioceses (Chuncheon, Daejeon, Incheon, Suwon, Uijeongbu, Wonju, Jeju, Jeonju, Andong, Cheongju, Masan, and Busan), and the Military Ordinariate. Among them, the Diocese of Andong is the smallest and poorest ecclesiastical province.
In comparison to other dioceses, the diocese of Andong has only one male religious congregation, 16 female religious congregations, 97 priests, and 41 parishes (Catholic churches). The scale of these numbers symbolically implies the presence of people who witness the mystery of the incarnation of Jesus in the manger.
These days, I am pondering about some ways to witness the truth in the city deeply influenced by Confucianism. How can I evangelize in the city where a few people come to our center of light and truth?
Before taking any action, I first pause to reflect on my life. The more time I spend looking back on my journey, the more I realize that I have lived according to my own desires. As a religious sister, I often quoted St. Paul’s words, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). Yet, in truth, it has not been Christ living through me, but rather I, myself, who have lived.
I went through a winding journey in the forest of my life. After serving the editorial sector for more than 10 years, I was sent to the mission team to experience outgoing works of evangelization to various parishes. Then, I was sent to Singapore, Rome, and the United States. During my spiritual journey with twists and turns for another 10 years, I was not able to settle in one place.
Finally, I came back to Korea with a desperate heart as the lost daughter of God. Nevertheless, I have never lost hope that comes from the unconditional and merciful love of God. Hope comes from faith, love, and gratitude.
I am now starting anew, beginning from the manger. Though I am currently unfamiliar with the apostolate, I am eager to learn and become acquainted with its various aspects. Embracing something new is both exciting and challenging, as it requires time, energy, and perseverance.
As Jesus is born in the manger, I start with the manger. My life is renewed in the manger. My vocation is a gift from God. Everything is a gift from God.
“Always begin from the manger!”

Finding faith in Andong

Concerts for hope
“Impelled by the fire of the Spirit, listening to contemporary humanity, we communicate the Gospel of hope.” This is the main theme of the upcoming 12th FSP (Daughters of St. Paul) General Chapter that will be held in Ariccia, Italy, from Sept. 7 to Oct. 7, 2025. We want to live and communicate hope.
Pope Francis also proclaimed 2024 as the Year of Prayer before celebrating 2025 as Jubilee “Pilgrims of Hope.”
Because so many signs of disasters are revealed all over the world, we are concerned about the reality. Thus, we are dreaming, praying and planning to have more hope.
As an exhibitor of Pauline books, I participated in the 25th annual St. Louis Marian Conference held for three days last May 17 to 19. During this dynamic event of inspiration, faith, hope and fellowship on the theme of “the word was made flesh, dwelt amongst us,” I took a chance to listen to Eric Genuis’ music and talks in the evening concert of healing and inspiration.
Listening to his talks about suffering, I was touched by his passionate sharing. His spontaneous way of playing the piano attracted my eyes. I was so engaged in his mission of "Concerts for Hope."
What made him so enthusiastic about his music ministry? His performance with storytelling was extraordinary.
Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1967, Genuis now lives in Louisville, Kentucky. As an inspiring composer, musician, pianist and instructor, he is well-known for his Concerts for Hope.
Performing his original compositions more than a hundred times a year, he is fully dedicated to music ministry in prisons, hospitals, rehab centers, nursing homes, homeless shelters, veterans’ homes and inner-city schools. He keeps playing the piano for marginalized people because he strongly feels music can bring humanity and beauty to people. He firmly believes that music can impact culture.
Just passing by his booth with piles of various CDs, I was encouraged to see his presence giving hope through his constant music projects.
Concerts for Hope is a nonprofit organization in which Genuis seeks to bring hope and inspiration to forgotten individuals on the fringe of society.
As a captivating speaker who consoles thousands of people, he regards music as “a language with the profound ability to stir the heart, inspire the mind and awaken the soul.” He hopes that his music will “spark hope, uplift emotions, renew the spirit and resonate within the heart of our shared human experience.”
His musical career began in 1997 when he was invited to perform at an AIDS benefit in Poland in front of 15,000 people. Then, he started touring the United States. Since then, he shares a marvelous healing ministry with a talented group of musicians.
His faithful activities for marginalized people remind me of a three-minute speech by Jorge Mario Bergoglio just before being elected as Pope Francis. “Evangelizing implies apostolic zeal and presupposes a bold willingness in the church to come out of herself and to go to the peripheries, not only the geographical peripheries but also the existential ones; the mystery of sin, pain, injustice, ignorance and absence of faith, all forms of deprivation, of all forms of misery. When the church does not come out of herself to evangelize, she becomes self-referential and then becomes sick.”

Concerts for hope

Not quitting
When I think of a man of hope, Saint Paul the Apostle comes to my mind. Despite all the hardship and suffering he had to face and endure, he never lost hope. He never gave up his zeal for evangelization.
One day, he expressed his hardship as follows:
“I am still more, with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, far worse beatings, and numerous brushes with death. Five times at the hands of the Jews I received 40 lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I passed a night and a day on the deep; on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my own race, dangers from Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, dangers among false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many sleepless nights, through hunger and thirst, through frequent fasting, through cold and exposure.” (2 Corinthians 11:23-27)
If I were in his shoes, what would I do? Would I be able to accept all the situations and carry my cross of life?
I still feel fragile especially when I am discouraged by negative comments and the signs of contradiction. However, through encouraging and inspiring letters, St. Paul gives us a good example of witnessing the truth without losing hope.
“We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9)
There is a poem entitled “Don’t Quit” that encourages us not to lose inner peace and hope but to go through all the situations with twists and turns. I encountered this poem among the holy cards displayed on the bookshelf in the bookshop.
“Don’t Quit” was written by Edgar A. Guest (1881-1959) who was born in England but moved to Detroit, Michigan, when he was young. He wrote about 11,000 poems and served as Michigan’s poet laureate. “Don’t Quit” first published in the Detroit Free Press on March 4, 1921, is as follows:
Don’t Quit
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow—
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than.
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out—
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit—
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.
Thus, never give up! As Adgar recommends, take a rest when necessary, but never quit! Keep going…

Not quitting

Undoer of knots
"Be a doer, not a dreamer!” It is a saying that inspires us to be a doer. The apostle James also advises us to put the words of God into practice by being “doers of the word” (James 1:22). We are encouraged to be more constructive and productive by being a faithful doer.
At the same time, we are inspired to be an undoer. What does it mean to be an undoer? In what way can we become an undoer?
Some of us might have a difficult time untangling the complicated knots of threads, hoses, and sometimes even relationships. As you know, untying knots takes a lot of time, energy, patience and prayer.
When the tangles are twisted, quick-tempered people can simply cut them away. Only those who are calm, patient and generous can undo the tangles one by one with enduring perseverance.
Solving and untangling the knots of human relationships take time and patience because relationships need considerable effort, along with an even more challenging process of understanding, acceptance, forgiveness, reconciliation and letting go.
There is a Baroque-styled painting of a woman untangling a long ribbon in the Catholic Pilgrimage Church of St. Peter and Perlach in Augsburg, Bavaria in Germany. Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner (1625-1707) painted it around 1700, commissioned by Hieronymus Ambrosius Langenmantel.
The Blessed Virgin Mary stands on the crescent moon in this painting. The Holy Spirit in the form of a dove is above her, while angels surround her. Her foot tramples the head of a knotted snake, representing the Devil, yet Mary is focused on untying knots from a long ribbon.
Below Mary, a little human walks together with the Angel Raphael. He is interpreted as Tobias in the Book of Tobit in the Old Testament. He is also interpreted as Wolfgang Langenmantel (1586-1637), the grandfather of Hieronymus Ambrosius Langenmantel.
Wolfgang was in distress because he was going to divorce his wife, Sophia Rentz. Realizing his situation, he asked Father Jakob Rem, a Jesuit priest, to help him. So, Father Jakob prayed earnestly before the Blessed Virgin Mary to untie all the knots of their marriage life.
Immediately, they recovered peace and love in their life and avoided divorce. In memory of this healing moment, their grandson, Hieronymus, commissioned the painting of Mary as "Undoer of Knots."
This devotion of Mary as Undoer of Knots was first spread and practiced in Argentina and Brazil. Then, thanks to Pope Francis who saw this painting while visiting Germany in the 1980s after a difficult stint as a seminary rector, the devotion of Mary as Undoer of Knots began to spread widely throughout the world. Since 2013, the image of "Mary, Undoer of Knots" (1700) has become a central symbol in his pastoral activities.
A marriage ribbon is still used in weddings in many countries. Couples are tied and looped together as a sign of their new unity with each other. However, as time passes, the ribbon can be twisted and knotted. Therefore, it is necessary to untangle the conflicts among people, especially among couples on the edge of divorce.
Pope Francis said: “These knots take away our peace and serenity. They are dangerous since many knots can form a tangle — that gets more and more painful and difficult to undo.”
Realizing its danger, St. Ignatius of Loyola advises us in his Spiritual Exercises to “put a good interpretation on a neighbor’s statement” rather than condemning it.

Undoer of knots
