'Season of Creation' 2026 창조 시기

Water is the most basic, essential and precious element of life. Water stands for renewal, blessing, restoration, vitality and hope.

How can we survive a single moment without water? As a person who drinks two bottles of water early in the morning as soon as I get up, I really appreciate the vitality that the water gives me every day.

According to the United Nations, 1.7 billion people lack basic hygiene services at home and 2.1 billion people still lack access to safe drinking water. This water shortage is one of the serious issues in the world today.

Some of the challenges are water being unaffordable for the poor, the industrial discharge of chemicals and other pollutants into rivers, increasing water consumption, serious droughts and floods and rising sea levels.

Regardless of denomination, whether Anglican, Lutheran, Reformed, Evangelical or Catholic, we are all in the same boat. As a result, 14 Christian organizations are involved in the Season of Creation Ecumenical Steering Committee to work on this year's topic, "Living Water."

The Season of Creation was begun by the Orthodox Church in 1989, and Pope Francis made it into a global ecumenical movement with the publication of “Laudato Si’ (Praise be to you)” in 2015. In 2019, Pope Francis officially endorsed the movement.

Since then, every year from Sept. 1 (World Day of Prayer for Creation) to Oct. 4 (Feast of St. Francis of Assisi), the whole Christian family, united in ecumenical solidarity, celebrates a worldwide month of prayer and action to protect our common home, the earth.

The theme of this year's water-focused program is “Immersion in Living Water,” calling people to step deeper into faith-driven environmental stewardship for renewal, repentance and healing.

Christians worldwide unite in prayer and action for ecological restoration, biodiversity protection and climate justice inspired by the prophetic vision of Ezekiel 47:1-12, which depicts a life-giving river flowing from God’s sanctuary to heal barren lands and revive ecosystems.

Rooted in that prophetic vision, the initiative invites people to pray, act and advocate for ecological restoration and water stewardship. We are called to step deeper into the water, recognizing the interconnectedness of human life and the earth’s water systems.

“Everything lives where the river goes … Along each bank of the river every kind of fruit tree will grow … Every month they will bear fresh fruit because the waters of the river flow out from the sanctuary.” (Ezekiel 47:9-12)

The flowing water transforms the barren land, heals aquatic ecosystems and produces fruit-bearing trees whose leaves provide healing.

Goals for the Season of Creation are acknowledging the crisis of global water scarcity, pollution and the degradation of freshwater ecosystems; having a special time of prayer and worship beyond denominational borders; and practical action engaging in local community efforts like river cleanups, water conservation projects, sustainability initiatives and climate advocacy for the earth’s healing.

We share a common call to care for God's creation. Thus, we celebrate God as the creator and acknowledge creation as the divine act that invites us to be collaborators, loving and caring for the gift we have been given.

As Pope Leo XIV said, creation care is “an urgent need that involves much more than simply protecting the environment. For it is a matter of justice — social, economic and human.”

2026 창조 시기 'Season of Creation’ 2026

물은 생명을 주는 가장 기본적이고 필수적이며 소중한 요소다. 물은 쇄신과 축복, 회복과 활력, 희망을 상징한다.

물이 없으면 우리는 한순간도 살아남을 수 없다. 이른 아침 일어나자마자 물 두 병을 마시는 나는 물이 주는 생기에 감사한다.

유엔에 따르면, 17억 명의 사람들이 가정에서 기본 위생 시설을 이용하지 못하며, 21억 명의 사람들은 여전히 안전한 식수를 마실 수 없다. 물 부족은 오늘날 세계가 직면한 심각한 문제 가운데 하나다.

물 부족으로 인해 우리가 당면한 도전은 물을 살 수 없는 가난한 이들, 산업이 빚어내는 폐수와 화학 물질을 비롯한 여러 오염 물질로 인한 강물의 오염, 나날이 증가하는 물 소비량, 심각한 가뭄과 홍수, 해수면 상승 등이다.

성공회, 루터교, 개혁교회, 복음주의 교회, 가톨릭 등 교파를 초월한 우리는 누구나 같은 배를 타고 있다. 이러한 까닭에 14개의 그리스도교 단체가 창조 시기 에큐메니컬운영위원회에 가담하여 활동하고 있는데, 올해 주제는 “살아있는 물”이다.

창조 시기 운동은 1989년 동방정교회에서 시작되었다. 그러다 2015년, 프란치스코 교황이 회칙 「찬미받으소서 Laudato Si’」를 발표하면서 세계적인 에큐메니컬 운동으로 발전되었고, 바티칸은 2019년에 이르러 이를 공식적으로 지지하며 함께 활동해왔다.

그 이래 해마다 9월 1일(피조물 보호를 위한 기도의 날)부터 10월 4일(아시시의 성 프란치스코 축일)까지 전 세계 그리스도인들은 초교파적으로 연대하며 하나 되어 우리 공동의 집인 지구를 보호하기 위해 함께 기도하며 실천한다.

올해 ‘물’을 주제로 한 프로그램의 상징은 “살아있는 물에 잠기기”로, 사람들이 신앙을 토대로 자연환경 보호 활동에 깊이 참여하며 쇄신과 회심을 거듭하여 치유와 회복을 불러일으키도록 이끈다.

세계 그리스도인들은 에제키엘 47장 1-12절의 ‘예언적 비전’에서 영감을 받아 생태 복원, 생물의 다양성 보호, 기후 정의를 위해 한마음으로 기도하며 행동한다. 에제키엘의 예언은 하느님의 성전에서 흘러나와 황폐한 땅을 치유하고 생태계를 되살리는, 살아있는 생명의 강에 대해 말한다.

에제키엘의 예언적 비전에 뿌리내린 창조 시기 운동은 사람들이 생태 복원과 물 관리를 위해 기도하고 행동하며 연대하도록 이끈다. 우리는 인간의 삶과 지구의 물 생태계가 서로 밀접하게 연결되어 있음을 인식하고, 물속으로 더 깊이 들어가 잠겨야 한다.

“이 강이 흘러가는 곳마다 온갖 생물이 우글거리며 살아난다. 이 물이 닿는 곳마다 바닷물이 되살아나기 때문에, 고기도 아주 많이 생겨난다. 이렇게 이 강이 닿는 곳마다 모든 것이 살아난다. … 이 강가 이쪽저쪽에는 온갖 과일나무가 자라는데, 잎도 시들지 않으며 과일도 끊이지 않고 다달이 새 과일을 내놓는다. 이 물이 성전에서 나오기 때문이다.”(에제키엘 47,9-12)

흐르는 물은 황폐한 땅을 변화시키고, 물의 생태계를 치유하며, 사람들과 자연을 치유하는 잎과 과일이 주렁주렁 달린 나무가 자라게 한다.

창조 시기의 목표는 세계의 물 부족, 오염, 담수 생태계의 파괴와 같은 위기 상황을 인식하고, 교파를 초월하여 특별한 기도와 찬양 시간을 가지며, 하천 정화, 물 보존 프로젝트, 지속가능한 창안과 사업, 지구를 치유하기 위한 기후 변화 대응 활동 등 지역 사회 차원에서 실천적인 노력을 기울이는 것이다.

우리는 누구나 하느님의 피조물을 돌보아야 할 공동 소명을 지닌다. 그리하여 우리는 하느님을 창조주로 찬양하고, 우리에게 선물로 주어진 피조물을 사랑하고 돌보는 협력자가 되어 거룩한 활동을 하도록 초대받았음을 자각한다.

레오 14세 교황이 언급한 것처럼 ‘피조물 돌봄’은 “단순히 자연환경 보호 그 이상의 것을 요청하는 시급한 필요성을 지닌다. 이는 사회적, 경제적, 인간적 정의의 문제”이기 때문이다.
