Inspiring moments 영감 어린 순간들

For three months in the fall of 2023, together with my senior Sister Gemma who has devoted herself to the immigrant mission for several decades, I visited 13 Korean Catholic Communities spread over 13 cities in the six States of Maryland, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee.

Encountering various Korean parishioners, I felt not only the joy and happiness of living a migrant life but also the challenge of making much effort to survive in a foreign country.

I still remember the encouraging and consoling words of an old woman at the mission in Nashville. Before Mass, during the peace greetings, and after Mass, she was happy to see us and came near us, saying in a loud voice “Thanks for coming. You are doing a good job. I pray for you all …”

As Pope Francis always emphasizes, we, the Pauline sisters, are willing to go to the frontiers in search of people longing for spirituality. On the way to our mission, we always experience so many inspiring moments and learn a lot from people we meet.

Truly, the diversity of immigrants makes the Catholic Churches in the United States much more lively, sincere, affluent, touching and colorful.

Our mission trip in search of Korean parishioners is a precious and grace-filled opportunity both to experience an intensive outgoing mission and to give spiritual food to people across the States.

Except for two parishes in Atlanta, 11 other communities were considerably small. Nevertheless, going out on the mission to small communities inspires, encourages and rewards us.

While going through various programs such as a special lecture on Lectio Divina, the retreat, the homily, a spiritual song and three-minute talks at the end of Mass, we are happy to give a chance to meet with some meaningful moments for the re-education of people with the help of the good image and appealing presence of “Pauline” in the world.

We don’t know anything about the future, but one thing is very clear: the seeds we have sown will grow somewhere little by little by the awesome and inspiring power of the Holy Spirit.

We truly appreciate the constant prayers and faithful encouragement of all our acquaintances. Thanks to their sincere, faithful and constant prayers as well as the considerate collaboration of benefactors and volunteers including book club members, everything was possible.

Although there were some changes in our schedule, there were many families who welcomed and provided us with food and lodgings. We are thankful for all the gifts of God.

The words are not enough to express our heartfelt thanks for all their generous, warm-hearted, cheerful and hospitable gestures of friendship and sharing. So many angels around us bring us grace-filled moments of love and joyful encounters. I assure and pray for their happiness.

Truly, the almighty God has presented himself through the birth of baby Jesus and presents himself among us always. “Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth, peace to those on whom his favor rests!” (Luke 2:14).

“Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared; for today is holy to our Lord. Do not be saddened this day, for rejoicing in the Lord is your strength!” (Nehemiah 8:10).

Therefore, let us celebrate the Christmas season with great joy.

영감 어린 순간들

2023년 가을 무렵 3개월 동안 나는 몇 십년 동안 이주민 선교에 헌신하신 선배 젬마 수녀님과 함께 메릴랜드, 노스캐롤라이나, 조지아, 앨라배마, 플로리다, 테네시 등 6개 주의 13개 도시에 흩어져 있는 한인 가톨릭 공동체 13곳을 방문했다.

다양한 한인 신자분들을 만나면서 나는 이주민의 삶을 살아가는 기쁨과 행복은 물론 외국에서 살아남기 위해 많은 노력을 기울이면서 도전하는 모습을 느꼈다.

내슈빌 한인 성당에서 선교할 때 만난 어느 할머니의 격려와 위로의 말을 여전히 기억한다. 미사 전에, 평화 인사 때, 그리고 미사 후에 그 할머니는 반가운 표정으로 다가와 큰소리로 말씀하셨다. “와 주셔서 고맙습니다. 좋은 일을 하십니다. 수녀님들을 위해 기도합니다….”

프란치스코 교황님이 늘 강조하시듯 우리 바오로딸 수녀들은 영성을 갈망하는 사람들을 찾아 기꺼이 변방으로 나아간다. 선교를 하는 가운데 우리는 언제나 영감 어린 순간을 많이 체험하며 우리가 만나는 사람들한테서 많은 것을 배운다.

참으로 다양한 이주민들은 미국 가톨릭 교회를 한층 활기차고 진지하고 풍요롭고 감동적이며 다채롭게 한다.

한국 신자들을 찾아 나서는 선교 여정은 집중적으로 찾아가는 선교를 체험할 뿐 아니라 미국 곳곳에서 살아가는 분들에게 영적 양식을 제공하는 소중하고 은혜로운 기회다.

애틀랜타에 있는 두 성당을 제외한 나머지 11개 공동체는 상당히 소규모였지만 이처럼 작은 공동체를 찾아가는 선교는 오히려 우리에게 영감을 주고 격려하며 보람을 느끼게 한다.

렉시오 디비나 특강, 피정, 강론, 영가, 3분 책 소개와 같은 여러 프로그램을 진행하면서 우리는 세상에서 활동하는 ‘바오로딸’의 좋은 이미지와 호소력 있는 현존에 힘입어 신자들의 재교육을 위해 뜻깊은 순간을 이루는 기회를 가지며 기뻐한다.

우리는 미래에 대해 아무것도 모르지만 분명한 것이 한 가지 있다. 그것은 우리가 뿌린 씨앗들이 놀랍고도 은혜로운 성령의 힘으로 그 어디인가에서 조금씩 조금씩 자라나리라는 사실이다.

모든 지인의 끊임없는 기도와 충실한 격려에 진심으로 감사드린다. 북클럽 회원을 비롯한 은인 협력자와 자원봉사자들의 사려 깊은 협력은 물론 그 모든 분의 진지하고 충실하며 항구한 기도 덕분에 모든 것이 가능했다.

일정이 다소 변경되었음에도 우리를 반갑게 맞이하며 숙식을 제공해준 가정이 많았다. 하느님의 그 모든 선물에 감사드릴 뿐이다.

모든 분의 너그럽고 따뜻하며 유쾌하고 친절한 우정과 나눔의 몸짓에 감사드리는 마음을 이루 다 표현할 수 없다. 우리 주변에는 수많은 천사들이 있어 우리에게 은총으로 가득한 사랑과 즐거운 만남의 순간을 가져다준다. 모든 은인이 부디 행복하기를 빌며 기도한다.

참으로 전능하신 하느님은 아기 예수의 탄생으로 당신 자신을 드러내셨고, 또 언제나 우리 가운데 당신 자신을 드러내신다. “지극히 높은 곳에서는 하느님께 영광, 땅에서는 그분 마음에 드는 사람들에게 평화!” (루카 2,14)

“가서 맛있는 음식을 먹고 단 술을 마시십시오. 오늘은 우리 주님께 거룩한 날이니, 미처 마련하지 못한 이에게는 그의 몫을 보내 주십시오. 주님께서 베푸시는 기쁨이 바로 여러분의 힘이니, 서러워하지들 마십시오!” (느헤미야 8:10)

그러니 우리 모두 크나큰 기쁨으로 성탄 시기를 축하하자.

Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche 라레체 성모 성당

During Christian missions in the United States, it is a privilege to visit nearby parishes with beautiful stained glass and special architecture.

While making a pilgrimage to various American parishes to attend daily Mass, I became more conscious of the constant prayers and the sincere and faithful devotion of people in attendance and participating in Confession. Various families coming to the church with their children also emanated hope.

Furthermore, visiting a shrine to attend Mass is akin to making a pilgrimage to the holy place. A shrine, small or big, always invites us to experience God’s love, forgiveness and mercy in a prayerful, devoted and peaceful atmosphere.

One day, using the Mass Times for Travel app to find a service nearby, I chose St. Madeleine Catholic Church in High Springs, Florida. Surprisingly, I found out that a shrine called Santa Fe Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche is attached to St. Madeleine Catholic Church, which was built in 1979 on the site of the Red Dragon drive-in theater.

The spacious and beautiful grounds around the shrine invite the visitors to experience relaxation, prayer, contemplation and gratitude. Hoping to be a spiritual place for healing and forgiveness, those related to the shrine are now raising funds to maintain, renovate and improve the holy campus.

After attending Mass at 8:30 a.m. in the shrine, I strolled along the Emmaus Walk, a nature path leading to the outdoor Marian Grotto and the Stations of the Cross, surrounded by tall trees.

Just near the shrine, there was the cemetery and Memorial Gardens with inspiring statues, brick walkways and benches for prayer and meditation.

The Christian tradition for the devotion of Our Lady of La Leche originates the story of the Holy Family. There was a cave, not far from Bethlehem, where the Holy Family of Mary and Joseph with the baby Jesus took refuge during the Slaughter of the Holy Innocents. Blessed Mother Mary and Joseph with Jesus stayed there before their flight to Egypt, and Mary nursed baby Jesus in that cave.

Known as the “Milk Grotto,” the cave in Bethlehem has become a place of pilgrimage for couples hoping to conceive a child, to receive a peaceful birth and plenty of milk when the child arrives.

In Spain, during the 16th century, the name Our Lady of La Leche took root and a shrine was erected in honor of Mary under this title. “La leche,” means breast milk in Spanish. The devotion to Our Lady of La Leche was deepened thanks to Spanish settlers establishing the town of St. Augustine in Florida in 1565. And the shrine was originally built in 1609 in honor of Our Lady of La Leche.

In 1620, a chapel to Our Lady of the Milk and Good Delivery was built in St. Augustine with a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As the oldest shrine in the United States, it is now located at the Nombre de Dios Mission in St. Augustine, Florida, and it was elevated to national shrine status in 2019.

Thanks to many pilgrims, the devotion to Mary of the breast milk (La leche) still continues. Wishing to have a happy delivery, many couples visit the shrine.

라레체 성모 성당

미주선교를 하면서 아름다운 스테인드 글라스와 특별한 건축 양식을 지닌 성당을 찾아가는 것은 특별한 은총이다.

매일 미사에 참례하기 위해 여러 성당을 번갈아 순례하면서 끊임없이 기도하는 것을 한층 의식하게 되었고, 또 미사에 참례하며 고해성사를 보는 사람들이 지닌 충실하고 진지한 신심을 엿보았다. 자녀들과 함께 성당에 나오는 많은 가정은 희망을 주었다.

더욱이 미사에 참례하러 성당에 가는 것은 성지 순례와 같다. 크든 작든, 성지는 언제나 충실하고 평온하게 기도하는 분위기 가운데 하느님의 사랑과 용서와 자비를 체험하도록 초대한다.

어느 날, ‘여행 중 미시 시간 알아보기’ 앱을 사용하여 미사 시간을 확인하다 플로리다주 하이스프링스에 있는 성 막달레나 성당을 선택했다. 그런데 놀랍게도 1979년 레드 드래곤 드라이브인 극장 자리에 건축된 성 막달레나 성당 바로 옆에 산타페 라레체 성모 성지가 있음을 알았다.

성당 주변에 펼쳐진 넓고 아름다운 공간은 찾아오는 이들로 하여금 잠시 쉬면서 기도하고 묵상하며 감사드리는 순간을 맛보게 한다. 치유와 용서를 위한 영적 공간을 자아내려는 성당 관계자들은 현재 성당 부지를 유지하며 새롭게 가꾸기 위해 기금을 모으고 있다.

오전 8시 30분 미사에 참례한 다음, 크나큰 나무들로 둘러싸인 십자가의 길과 야외 성모 동굴로 이어지는 엠마오 오솔길을 따라 걸었다.

성당 근처에는 영감을 주는 여러 모습의 동상, 벽돌이 깔린 산책로, 기도와 명상을 위한 벤치가 놓인 기념 묘지 정원이 있었다.

라레체 성모 신심에 대한 그리스도교 전통은 성가정 이야기에서 비롯된다. 베들레헴에서 그다지 멀지 않은 곳에 동굴이 하나 있었는데, 마리아와 요셉 성가정은 아기 예수와 함께 죄 없는 어린이들의 학살을 피해 잠시 그 동굴에서 지냈다. 복되신 어머니 마리아와 요셉은 예수와 함께 이집트로 피신하기 전 그 동굴에 머물렀는데, 마리아는 그곳에서 아기 예수에게 젖을 먹였다.

‘라레체 동굴'로 알려진 베들레헴의 동굴은 아이를 임신하고 평화로운 출산을 바라며, 아이가 태어났을 때 젖이 많이 나오기를 바라는 부부들의 순례지가 되었다.

스페인에서는 16세기에 ‘라레체 성모’라는 이름이 뿌리내렸으며 라레체 성모 기념 성당을 세웠다. 라레체(La leche)는 스페인어로 모유(밀크)를 뜻한다.

라레체 성모 신심은 1565년 플로리다주 세인트오거스틴에 도시를 이룬 스페인 이주민들 덕분에 한층 깊어졌다. 라레체 성모님을 기리는 라레체 성모 성당은 1609년에 건축되었다.

1620년, 순조로운 출산과 수유를 위해 기도하는 라레체 성모 성당이 복되신 동정 마리아 동상과 함께 세인트오거스틴에 세워졌다. 라레체 성모 성당은 미국에서 가장 오래된 성당으로, 현재 플로리다주 세인트오거스틴 놈브레 데 디오스 공소에 자리하고 있으며, 2019년에 미국 성지가 되었다.

많은 순례자들 덕분에 라레체 성모 신심은 꾸준히 이어져 내려오고 있으며, 행복한 출산을 바라는 많은 부부들이 이 성당을 찾는다.

Outgoing missions 찾아가는 선교

Missionaries are constantly coming and going around the world. On the way to an extensive mission trip across the United States, I am happy to meet various types of parishioners.

People whom I encounter during missions are so diverse with unique stories. Most of the stories are so touching that I always remember their tough journeys and keep them in my prayers.

Some people are not able to understand and accept their situation. So, they often ask some questions about life, but all in all, they realize the marvelous and amazing hand of God in their lives.

When I stayed in one of our benefactors’ houses in Atlanta, our faithful supporter asked me to keep an eye out for the whereabouts of Fr. Sean Conneely, a Columban priest and missionary whom she met in Chicago many years ago.

Searching for some information about him, his life drew my attention and invited me to reflect on the mysterious providence of God. I realized again that each of us undergoes a winding spiritual journey of trials. The history of salvation is fulfilled little by little throughout our lives in many ways.

Fr. Sean was born in Galway, Ireland, in 1943. He went to boarding school at age 13. Then, in 1962, he entered the Missionary Society of Saint Columban. After being ordained a priest in 1969, he was appointed as a missionary to Korea.

He worked in Gwangju as a parish priest and then moved to Seoul to work for college students. In 1976, he was involved in the ME (Marriage Encounter) movement for the unity of couples. He also introduced the Choice program for unmarried young people in 1982.

However, during his pastoral activities, he couldn’t help but drink much of the Korean liquor called “soju” with parishioners and students as well. Due to his drinking habit of almost 20 years, he sincerely prayed to God to heal his addiction. As a result, he was sent to the United States to find a way to cure himself and to look for another pastoral activity.

He joined an alcohol rehabilitation center in Chicago in 1992, and he studied Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University in Chicago and attained Addiction Counseling Specialist Certification. Since then, he has been involved in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as an addiction counselor. He also worked as a pastoral counselor in 1999 and stayed in the United States up to 2005.

With the help of AA's Twelve Steps Program for addicts, he worked with alcohol addicts, drug addicts, food addicts, sex addicts, etc. Those who overcame their crisis can surely empower addicts to renew their lives. Truly, heaven helps those who help themselves.

Then, he came back to Korea in 2005 and introduced the “Retrovaille” (rediscovery of marriage) program. Thanks to his recovery, he could help others deal with their own problems. He helped people undergoing the crisis of divorce to look deep into themselves and bring forward what they have discovered. He also offered spiritual accompaniment to many sisters of religious orders who searched for spiritual support.

Looking back over the past 70 years of his life, he said “I feel that at times I have allowed myself to be carried by the current and then with the help of God and remaining close to Him.”

He returned to his homeland in 2020, but he always appreciates the beauty of living as a missionary. Happy are those who are willing to experience outgoing missions!

찾아가는 선교

선교사들은 끊임없이 온 세상을 오간다. 미국 곳곳을 찾아가는 폭넓은 선교 여행을 하면서 체험하는 기쁜 일은 다양한 모습의 신자들을 만나는 것이다.

선교 가운데 만나는 사람들은 참으로 다양하여 저마다 특별한 사연을 지닌다. 사람들의 이야기는 무척 감동적이어서 저마다 걸어온 힘겨운 여정을 기억하며 한결같이 기도하게 된다.

어떤 이들은 자신의 상황을 이해하고 받아들이지 못하여 삶에 대한 물음을 종종 던지기도 하지만, 마침내 그들은 자기 삶 속에 깃든 놀랍고도 은혜로운 하느님의 손길을 깨닫는다.

애틀란타에 사시는 은인 댁에 머무른 적이 있다. 한결같이 충실하신 그 후원자는 몇 년 전 시카고에서 만난 성골롬반외방선교회 선교사 션 코닐리 신부님의 안부를 물으며 지금 어디 계신지 궁금해했다.

그리하여 션 신부님에 대해 찾아보았는데, 그분의 삶은 내 눈길을 끌어 신비로운 하느님 섭리를 묵상하게 했다. 우리 한 사람 한 사람은 누구나 우여곡절이 많은 영적 시련의 여정을 겪는다는 것을 다시 한 번 느꼈다. 구원 역사는 온 삶에 걸쳐 여러 모습으로 조금씩 이루어진다.

션 신부님은 1943년 아일랜드 골웨이 태생으로 열세 살에 기숙학교에 다녔고, 1962년 성골롬반외방선교회에 들어갔으며, 1969년 사제품을 받은 다음 선교사로 한국에 파견되었다.

션 신부님은 광주에서 본당사목을 한 다음 서울에 올라와 대학사목을 했다. 1976년에는 부부들의 일치를 위한 매리지 엔카운터(ME) 운동에 가담했으며, 1982년에는 미혼 젊은이들을 위한 선택 프로그램을 소개했다.

그런데 신부님은 사목 활동을 하면서 신자들은 물론 학생들과 더불어 어쩔 수 없이 소주를 많이 마시게 되었다. 그리하여 20년 가까이 몸에 베인 음주 습관에서 벗어나지 못하자 자신의 중독을 치유해 달라고 하느님께 간청하기에 이르렀다. 마침내 신부님은 미국에 파견되어 자신을 치료할 방법을 찾으며 또 다른 형태의 사목 활동을 모색했다.

1992년, 신부님은 시카고 알코올 재활 센터에 가담했고 시카고 로욜라대학교에서 사목상담학을 공부하여 중독상담전문가 자격증을 취득했다. 그 후 익명의 알코올 중독자들(AA) 공동체에서 중독 상담사로 활약헸으며, 1999년 사목상담가가 되어 2005년까지 미국에 머물렀다.

알코올 중독 환자들의 회복을 위한 12단계 프로그램의 도움을 받은 신부님은 알코올 중독자, 마약 중독자, 음식 중독자, 섹스 중독자 들과 함께 일했다. 자신의 위기를 극복한 이들은 누구나 다른 중독자들 또한 자기 삶을 새롭게 시작하도록 힘을 실어줄 수 있다. 참으로 하늘은 스스로 돕는 이를 돕는다.

그러다가 2005년 한국에 돌아온 신부님은 '르투르바이'(결혼의 재발견) 주말 프로그램을 소개했다. 한때 자신의 문제였던 중독에서 벗어난 신부님은 이제 다른 사람들이 문제를 해결하도록 도울 수 있었다. 신부님은 혼인생활에 어려움을 겪는 이혼 위기 부부들이 자신을 깊이 들여다보고 그 내면에서 발견한 것을 나누도록 도왔으며, 영적 도움을 구하는 많은 수도자들의 영적 동반을 하기도 했다.

션 신부님은 지난 70년 동안 걸어온 자신의 삶을 돌아보며 이렇게 말했다. “때때로 저는 현재의 흐름에 휩쓸렸고, 하느님의 도움으로 하느님 가까이 머물기도 했습니다.”

신부님은 2020년 본국으로 돌아갔지만 선교사로 살아가는 삶의 아름다움에 늘 감사드린다. 행복하여라, 찾아가는 선교를 기꺼이 체험하는 이들!

TOV Studio Photography 토브 스튜디오

One day, appreciating various types of houses, I took a walk around Lakeside on Preston in West Plano, Texas. Along the way, I came across an old lady arranging a heart-shaped decoration hung on the front door of her house.

“Happiness” and “Welcome” were the words inscribed on the stepping stones in front of the entrance. Also, instead of a nameplate, the words “Live Well” were written on the main gate.

I also noticed an iron sculpture standing proudly in the middle of the front yard. As I asked her its meaning, she said: “It means a mother lifting her child to the almighty God. It could also mean two crucifixes supporting each other.”

I looked at the sculpture attentively... Then, I bid her goodbye. Just then, she replied, “My husband is a Catholic, but I don’t believe in God. I feel it doesn’t matter to me. We just touched one another while on our journeys, and we will all ultimately pass away someday.”

Well, it is true that each of us encounters others as we go on our life's journey. Encountering various people along the way, we come and go endlessly. It seems that we meet one another by chance or coincidence, but it is God who provides everything for the good of each person.

When I stayed in Texas, I met Stella Ma who studied Photography at Chung-Ang University. Collaborating together with her husband, she manages TOV Studio Photography for weddings, family photos, babies and events with various items of professional photography equipment and learned techniques.

One day, with some of her friends, Stella joined in the retreat held in a Korean parish in Fort Worth. She was so touched during the retreat that she invited us to see and experience TOV Studio Photography.

Thus, we took some time to visit the studio. Especially because we needed a portrait photo, we were willing to accept her hospitality. Once we entered the studio, they asked us to try various poses and took many photos of each of us.

“Tov” in Hebrew means good. Tov also means beautiful, excellent, joyful, whole, goodness, blessing, happiness and welfare. The word appears in the book of Genesis in the Old Testament when God said, “It was good to see,” (Genesis 1:4,10,12,18,21,25,31). Looking at and appreciating every creature he made, God expressed the goodness of each being!

“Good deeds” (John 5:29), “a good work” (Philippians 1:6), and “all that is good” (Hebrews 13:21) are related to the goodness that God provides for us. It is so good, happy and pleasing to see and experience goodness in our lives! Selfless hospitality, generosity and cheerful sharing are all the fruits of good works and good deeds.

Slowly recovering from her health issue, Stella has to struggle a lot but she does her best to study the Bible, to read good spiritual books and to share food with others. Remembering the good examples of her parents, she is doing all this good work for others.

Surely, suffering and trials are challenging, but difficult moments can be a stepping stone toward spiritual growth.

“Mazel tov,” or good luck and well wishes, to all those who are undergoing personal trials at this time. Happy are those who are willing to share with others despite of challenging situations.

토브 스튜디오

어느 날, 여러 형태의 집을 감상하면서 텍사스주 웨스트 플레이노에 있는 ‘레이크사이드 온 프레스턴’ 주변을 산책했다. 여기저기 거닐다 어느 집에 이르러 현관문에 하트 모양의 장식을 걸고 있는 노부인을 만났다.

그 집 입구 앞 디딤돌에는 'Happiness(행복)'과 'Welcome(환영)'이라는 글이 새겨져 있었고, 정문에는 명패 대신 “Live Well(잘 사세요)”이라는 글이 쓰여 있었다.

앞마당 한복판에 당당하게 서 있는 철제 조각상도 눈에 띄었다. 조각의 의미를 묻자 노부인은 말했다. “어머니가 자기 아이를 전지전능하신 하느님께 들어올리는 것을 뜻하지. 두 개의 십자가가 서로를 지지하는 것을 뜻하기도 해.”

나는 그 조각을 찬찬히 바라고는 작별 인사를 건넸다. 그러자 그 노부인이 덧붙여 말했다. “남편은 가톨릭 신자인데 난 하느님을 믿지 않아. 나에겐 그게 중요하지 않아. 우리는 저마다 여정을 걸어가다 서로 만났을 뿐이고, 결국 우리 모두는 언젠가 세상을 떠나겠지.”

사실 우리는 저마다 삶의 여정을 걸어가면서 서로 만난다. 길을 가다 여러 사람들을 만나며 끊임없이 오간다. 우연히 만나는 것 같지만 한 사람 한 사람의 선善을 위해 모든 것을 마련해 주시는 분은 하느님이시다.

텍사스에 머물렀을 때 중앙대학교에서 사진학을 전공한 스텔라를 만났다. 스텔라는 남편과 함께 다양한 전문 사진 장비와 노련한 기술로 웨딩, 가족, 아기, 각종 행사 사진을 찍어주는 TOV 스튜디오를 운영한다.

어느 날, 스텔라는 몇몇 친구들과 함께 포트워스 한인 성당에서 진행한 피정에 참석했다. 스텔라는 피정 동안 감동을 받은 나머지 우리를 초대하여 TOV 스튜디오를 견학하고 체험하게 했다.

우리는 시간을 내어 스튜디오를 방문했다. 우리는 인물 사진이 필요했기에 우리를 환대한 스텔라의 호의를 기꺼이 받아들였다. 우리가 스튜디오에 들어서자 다양한 포즈를 취해 보라며 많은 사진을 찍어주었다.

토브(Tov)는 히브리어로 '좋다'라는 뜻이다. 토브는 또한 아름다운, 탁월한, 즐거운, 온전한, 선함, 축복, 행복, 복지를 뜻한다. 이 단어는 구약성경 창세기에 하느님이 “보시니 좋았다”고 하신 말씀에 나온다(창세기 1,4.10.12.18.21.25.31). 하느님은 손수 만드신 모든 피조물을 바라보고 음미하며 각 존재 안에 깃든 선善을 표현하셨다!

“선행”(요한복음 5,29), “좋은 일”(필리피서 1,6), “온갖 좋은 것”(히브리서 13,21)은 하느님이 우리에게 마련해 주시는 선善과 관련 있다. 우리 삶에서 선함을 보고 체험하는 것은 참으로 좋고 행복하며 즐거운 일이다! 사심 없는 환대와 너그러움, 기쁜 나눔은 모두 좋은 일과 선행의 열매들이다.

건강 문제로 서서히 회복하고 있는 스텔라는 많은 어려움을 겪으면서도 성경을 공부하고 유익한 영적 독서를 하며 이웃과 음식을 나누는 데 최선을 다한다. 스텔라는 부모님이 보여주신 훌륭한 귀감을 기억하면서 다른 이들을 위해 온갖 좋은 일을 한다.

고통과 시련은 분명 도전적이지만, 힘겨운 순간들은 영적 성장을 향한 디딤돌이 될 수 있다.

지금 이 순간 개인적으로 시련을 겪고 있는 모든 이에게 행운을 빈다. “마젤 토브!” 어려운 상황에도 기꺼이 이웃과 더불어 나누는 이들은 행복하다.

Shrine of Christ’s Passion 그리스도 수난 성지

Various forms of the shrines reveal the glory of God. In 1954, Frank Wachter offered an acre of his Indiana farm to build a Catholic shrine with an Italian marble Madonna that still exists as “The Great Lady” in front of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Indianapolis.

Frank Schilling, a grandson of Frank Wachter, and his wife Shirley reacquired the land so as to build the Shrine of Christ’s Passion with the Stations of the Cross. Now, this location is frequented by more than 200,000 pilgrims every year from 40 countries.

The nondenominational and nonprofit Shrine of Christ’s Passion is a multimedia interactive prayer trail that depicts the Passion of Christ. The shrine connects 18 meditation grottos. Forty finely detailed, life-sized bronze statues, created by Texas sculptor Mickey Wells, depict Christ’s journey to Calvary, along with the Last Supper and the Ascension.

Before this initiative, Frank Schilling took road trips to Santa Fe in New Mexico and to the Groom Cross in Texas. On these road trips, he met Mickey Wells, a sculptor creating biblical figures in life-size bronze.

In sculpting, molding and casting sculptures, Wells has skilled hands and an eye for detail.

After years of prayer, research and hard work, he depicted the first series of sculptures of the Stations of the Cross. It took him three to six months to design and cast each one, especially concentrating on the physical anguish and divine forgiveness in Christ’s facial features.

Wells started sculpting at the age of 13 under the teaching of Mary Mitchell, an Amarillo artist and gallery owner. She allowed him to sit in on her art classes in exchange for his help around the gallery. His help was not necessary, but she asked him to do errands such as going to the local convenience store and sweeping the studio floors so as to provide him with the opportunity to be around art. In this way, she became a source of positive inspiration and endless encouragement.

Wells continued to study his art in all mediums: drawing, painting and especially sculpting. At 14, he found a market eager to purchase his portraits. As he grew older, his passion for art was intensified through coursework taken in anatomy and kinesiology.

In 1994, he learned that there was a project where an artist was needed to create life-size bronze statues depicting the stations of the cross. So, he presented two life-size clay busts of Jesus. This presentation allowed him to highlight his talent for achieving a wide range of emotions while working with clay as a medium.

He hopes that his sculptures will enlighten viewers about the pain, suffering and sacrifice of Christ. “To provide a prayerful environment where all people can open their hearts to the journey of Christ’s Passion and draw closer to the Lord” is the mission of the Shrine of Christ’s Passion.

The construction of the Shrine of Christ’s Passion began in 2001, and it was opened in 2008 as a spiritual jewel of the diocese. At each prayer alcove, we can listen to a spiritual meditation read by Chicago broadcaster Bill Kurtis.

Meditation areas include “Our Lady of Guadalupe,” “Moses and the 10 Commandments on Mount Sinai,” “The sanctity of life shrine in loving memory of the innocent victims of abortion” and “Our Lady of the New Millennium.”

그리스도 수난 성지

여러 모습의 성지는 하느님의 영광을 드러낸다. 1954년, 프랭크 워치터는 이탈리아산 대리석으로 만든 성모상을 모신 가톨릭 성지를 세우기 위해 인디애나 농장 1에이커(1224평)를 봉헌했다. “위대한 성모님”이라고 불리는 이 성모상은 현재 인디애나폴리스 성 요한 복음사가 성당 앞에 모셔져 있다.

프랭크 워치터의 손자 프랭크 실링과 그의 아내 셜리는 그 땅을 다시 확보하여 십자가의 길이 있는 그리스도 수난 성지를 조성했다. 이제 이 성지에는 40개 나라에서 20만 명이 넘는 순례자들이 해마다 찾아온다.

교파를 초월하여 비영리로 운영되는 그리스도 수난 성지는 예수님의 수난을 사실적으로 보여주는 인터랙티브(쌍방향) 멀티미디어 기도 산책로이며 18개의 명상 코너로 이어진다. 텍사스 조각가 미키 웰스가 제작한 실물 크기의 정교하고 세밀한 청동상 40개는 최후의 만찬과 승천 장면과 함께 골고타 언덕으로 향하는 그리스도의 수난 여정을 묘사한다.

프랭크 실링은 이 프로젝트를 실행에 옮기기 전에 뉴멕시코 산타페와 텍사스 그룸에 있는 십자가의 길을 답사하러 자동차 여행을 떠났다. 그 여정 가운데 그는 실물 크기의 청동으로 성경 속 인물을 만드는 조각가 미키 웰스를 만났다.

웰스는 조각과 몰딩, 주조 조각품 분야에서 숙련된 손 솜씨와 세부 사항에 대한 안목을 지니고 있다.

그는 여러 해 동안 기도하고 연구하며 노력을 기울인 끝에 첫 번째 십자가의 길 조각 시리즈를 그렸다. 각 조각품을 디자인하고 캐스팅하는 데는 3~6개월이 걸렸다. 그는 특히 그리스도의 얼굴에 특징적으로 드러나는 신체적 고통과 거룩한 용서를 드러내기 위해 심혈을 기울였다.

웰스는 텍사스 애머릴로 예술가이자 갤러리 주인인 메리 미첼의 가르침을 받아 열세 살에 조각을 시작했다. 미첼은 웰스가 갤러리에서 심부름을 하며 도와주는 대가로 자신의 미술 수업을 수강하게 했다. 사실 미첼은 웰스의 도움을 필요로 하지는 않았지만 그가 예술을 접하는 기회를 마련해 주기 위해 동네 편의점에 심부름을 가거나 작업실 바닥을 청소하는 것과 같은 일을 부탁했다. 이러한 도움으로 미첼은 웰스에게 좋은 영감을 불러일으키며 끊임없이 격려하는 스승이 되었다.

웰스는 드로잉, 회화, 특히 조각 등 모든 매체를 활용하여 한결같이 미술을 공부했다. 열네 살 때 그는 자신이 그린 초상화를 구입하려는 사람들을 만났고, 나이가 들면서 해부학과 신체운동학 수업을 받으며 예술에 대한 열정을 불태웠다.

1994년, 그는 실물 크기의 청동상으로 십자가의 길을 재현하는 예술가를 필요로 하는 프로젝트가 있음을 알고 실물 크기의 점토로 만든 예수님 흉상 두 점을 선보였다. 이 작품의 제출로 그는 점토를 활용하여 다양한 감정을 표현하는 재능을 부각시켰다.

그는 자신의 조각품을 바라보는 이들에게 그리스도의 고통과 수난과 희생을 일깨워 주고자 한다. “모든 사람이 그리스도의 수난 여정에 마음을 열고 주님께 더 가까이 다가가도록 기도하는 환경을 제공하는 것”이 그리스도 수난 성지의 사명이다.

그리스도 수난 성지 건축은 2001년에 시작되어 2008년에 완공됨으로써 교구 내 영적 보석으로 자리매김했다. 각 기도 코너(골방)에는 시카고 방송인 빌 커티스가 읽어주는 영적 묵상이 울려 퍼진다.

명상 공간에는 또한 "과달루페의 성모," "시나이산의 모세와 십계명," "낙태로 무고하게 희생된 아이들을 사랑으로 기억하는 생명의 성지,” "새천년의 성모상"이 있다.

Giving appreciation 감사드리기

Appreciation is a good habit for a healthy, happy, joyful and fulfilling life. Hans Selye (1907-1982), a Hungarian-Canadian endocrinologist, said that appreciation is the secret of purifying and releasing stress. Through this stress theory, he became the first scientist to identify stress as the root cause of illness.

Appreciation is the root of laughter as well. When we appreciate even a little thing, we begin to smile. In our lives, there are so many things and so many moments that we can appreciate: our breath and the air, our legs that move anywhere we want to go, our arms that we can do so many activities with, our eyes that can see all the beauty of the world, a nose, the sky, trees, the wind, clouds, parents, siblings, teachers, editors, kindness and sharing.

Appreciating every moment, we can’t but be happy and cheerful. Naturally, we are willing to give thanks for all things and share joy with others. Appreciating all kinds of creatures around us, there is nothing that we can neglect and take for granted. However, we often forget to appreciate the various things in our surroundings.

One day, when I went to an American Catholic church to attend daily Mass, a beautiful old lady approached me with a cheerful smile and greeted me, saying “Thank you for your sacrifice!” She was wholeheartedly appreciating our religious presence in the world. Like this lady, many people appreciate our presence and recognize our willing and devoted offerings to God.

Some people think that religious sisters focus on our sacrifices because we give up so many comforts in choosing a life of poverty, chastity and obedience. But, as far as the religious sisters or brothers are concerned, our radical choices are made by the decision of spontaneous love and willing dedication to God.

Nowadays in Western countries, the number of religious sisters wearing the religious habit is decreasing more and more. Some of the religious orders (congregations) already decided not to wear the religious uniform anymore. So, it is not easy to recognize them walking on the street in their secular clothes. Furthermore, many religious buildings have become empty, and some historical buildings are used for other purposes.

We go to the Korean parishes on the weekends as a part of our mission trips. After the mission, especially on Sunday, we visit various American Catholic churches to attend daily Mass. Praising God together, we appreciate the sincere presence of local parishioners who attend Mass every day.

Despite the decreasing number of parishioners, many Catholic churches are still crowded with people thanks to their sincere faith. Those who attend Mass are willing to kneel on the kneelers in the Church, and receive the Sacrament of Confession. It is clear that the devoted attendees do appreciate every sign of living faith in their daily lives. They appreciate every moment of their lives and give thanks to God.

Amid ongoing wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, what the world needs most is a true appreciation and respect for life. Why don’t we appreciate individual uniqueness and differences as they are?

“In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

감사드리기

감사드리는 것은 건강하고 행복한 삶, 기쁘고 충만한 삶을 위한 좋은 습관이다. 헝가리계 캐나다인 내분비학자 한스 셀리에(1907~1982)는 스트레스를 정화하고 해소하는 비결은 곧 감사하는 것이라고 말했다. 한스 셀리에는 스트레스 이론을 통해 스트레스가 질병의 근본 원인임을 처음 밝힌 과학자가 되었다.

감사하는 마음은 웃음의 뿌리이기도 하다. 작은 것에도 고마워할 때 우리는 웃음 짓기 시작한다. 우리 삶에는 고마워하며 음미할 수 있는 일과 순간이 참으로 많다. 우리가 들이마시고 내쉬는 숨과 공기, 가고 싶은 곳은 어디든 움직이는 다리, 많은 활동을 할 수 있는 팔, 세상의 온갖 아름다움을 바라볼 수 있는 눈, 코, 하늘, 나무, 바람, 구름, 부모님, 형제자매들, 스승, 편집인, 친절, 나눔….

순간순간 감사하다 보면 행복에 겨워 기뻐하지 않을 수 없다. 즐거워하다 보면 자연스럽게 모든 것에 기꺼이 감사하며 다른 사람들과 그 기쁨을 나누기 마련이다. 우리 주변의 온갖 피조물을 음미하며 고마워하면 우리가 소홀히 여기며 당연하게 여길 수 있는 것은 하나도 없다. 그런데도 우리는 주변에 있는 여러 가지 것들에 고마움을 표현하는 것을 곧잘 잊어버린다.

어느 날, 평일 미사에 참례하러 미국인 성당에 갔는데, 한 아름다운 노부인이 환한 웃음을 띄우며 다가와 “수녀님의 희생에 감사드려요!” 하며 인사를 건넸다. 그 노부인은 세상에 현존하는 수도자들에게 진심으로 감사하고 있었다. 이 여인처럼 많은 사람이 수도자로서 우리의 현존에 감사하며 우리가 하느님께 기꺼이 헌신적으로 자신을 봉헌하고 있음을 인식한다.

어떤 이들은 수도자들이 희생에 초점을 맞춘다고 생각한다. 청빈과 순결과 순명의 삶을 선택하기 위해 위안이 되는 많은 것을 포기하기 때문이다. 그러나 수녀나 수사의 수도생활에 관련된 급진적 선택은 하느님을 자발적으로 사랑하고 기꺼이 헌신하려는 결단에 따른 것이다.

요즘 서양에서는 수도복을 입는 수녀들이 점점 줄어들고 있다. 몇몇 수도회는 이미 더 이상 수도복을 입지 않기로 결정했다. 그래서 사복을 입고 거리를 활보하는 이들이 누구인지 알아보기가 쉽지 않다. 더욱이 많은 종교 단체 건물이 텅 비어 있으며, 일부 역사적 건물은 다른 용도로 사용되고 있다.

우리는 선교 여정의 일환으로 주말이면 한인 성당을 방문한다. 특히 일요일에 있는 선교가 끝나면 여러 미국인 성당을 번갈아 찾아가 평일 미사를 드린다. 우리는 미국인 신자들과 함께 평일 미사에 참례하여 하느님을 찬미하며 신심 어린 신자들의 현존에 감사드린다.

신자 수가 줄어들고 있음에도 많은 성당이 신실한 신앙으로 여전히 붐빈다. 미사에 참례하는 신자들은 장궤틀에 기꺼이 무릎 꿇으며 고해성사를 받는다. 분명 신심 깊은 신자들은 자신의 일상 가운데 생생하게 살아 있는 믿음의 표징들에 감사드리고 있다. 믿는 이들은 삶의 순간순간을 음미하며 하느님께 감사드린다.

중동과 우크라이나에서 전쟁이 계속되는 가운데, 세계가 가장 필요로 하는 것은 참된 감사로움과 생명에 대한 존중이다. 개인의 고유함과 다름을 있는 그대로 받아들이고 음미하며 감사하면 어떨까?

“모든 일에 감사하십시오. 이것이 그리스도 예수님 안에서 살아가는 여러분에게 바라시는 하느님의 뜻입니다.”(1테살 5,18)

‘What Men Live By?’ 사람은 무엇으로 사는가?

Preparing for a mission retreat program, I looked for several authors and finally met Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) in spirit.

In his works such as “War and Peace,” “Anna Karenina,” “A Confession,” and “On Life” as well as many stories including “Martin the Cobbler” and “The Death of Ivan Ilyich,” I found that he sincerely dealt with the theme of death and life. Especially “The Death of Ivan Ilyich,” which describes realistically the events leading up to and after a main character's death.

For Tolstoy, the meaning of life is naturally provided by the inevitability of death. Inspired by his intuition on mortality, he reflected on how to live and what to do.

Throughout his life, he pondered on the meaning of death: What is eternal in the face of death? How to live so as to overcome fear of death? What can we know in the face of death? The early deaths of his parents, the deaths of his two brothers, and his participation in wars might have inspired him to reflect on death.

While pondering on death, he was eager to reflect on the true meaning of life as well. Therefore, he often asked himself some fundamental questions about life: What principles do people live by? What is at the core of humanity? What are the limits of being human? What is the true value of life?

Especially after his 50s, he believed that experiencing suffering and reflecting on the self is necessary to grow.

As a result of his perennial questions about life and death, he drew three important conclusions: First, the most important time is the present. Second, the most precious person is the one near me. Third, the most important thing is to do good for that person.

“What Men Live by” deals with the fundamental question of how to live. The angel in this story said: “I have learned that all men live not by care for themselves but by love … I remained alive … because he and his wife pitied and loved me … It is love alone by which they live. He who has love is in God, and God is in him, for God is love.”

We came into being to do our best for the people we encounter every moment. Living every moment to the fullest and doing our best here and now, we are naturally inspired to prepare for the holy death.

We do not know when death will come to us. We just live in the present moment to the fullest while remembering death. “Memento mori!”

In my life, two critical moments made me deeply ponder life and death. Once, when I graduated from high school, I thought about death, but that reflection led me to a new beginning. Another critical moment was when the whole world was slammed by the COVID-19 pandemic. At this time, again, I concentrated on living every moment to the fullest.

It is much easier to live to the fullest when we are happy, joyful and healthy. The problem is when we are facing challenges. How can we live to the fullest in the midst of conflicts and difficulties? As Tolstoy affirmed, the only answer is living here and now with love and prayers. Everything beyond the present moment depends on the providence of God.

피정 선교 프로그램을 준비하면서 여러 작가들을 둘러보던 가운데 마침내 레프 톨스토이(1828-1910)를 영적으로 만났다.

“전쟁과 평화,” “안나 카레니나,” “참회록,” “인생론” 같은 작품을 비롯하여 “구두수선공 마틴,” “이반 일리치의 죽음” 등 여러 이야기에서 톨스토이는 죽음과 삶이라는 주제를 진지하게 다루었다. 특히 주인공의 죽음과 그 이후에 일어난 일들을 사실적으로 묘사한 “이반 일리치의 죽음”은 죽음이라는 문제를 흥미롭게 다룬다.

톨스토이에게 삶의 의미는 필연적 죽음이라는 문제에 자연스럽게 뒤따라온다. 인간의 유한한 삶에 대한 통찰에서 영감을 받은 그는 과연 우리는 어떻게 살아야 하는지, 무엇을 해야 하는지 곰곰이 곱씹었다.

그는 참으로 한평생 죽음의 의미에 대해 돌아보았다. “죽음 앞에서 영원한 것은 무엇인가?” “죽음에 대한 두려움을 극복하려면 어떻게 살아야 하는가?” “죽음 앞에서 우리는 무엇을 알 수 있는가?” 어쩌면 일찍 돌아가신 부모님과 두 형의 죽음, 그리고 자신의 참전 체험은 죽음에 대해 더 깊이 돌아보게 했으리라.

그는 죽음에 대해 고민하는 한편 삶의 참된 의미에 대해서도 깊이 성찰했으며, 그 결과 삶에 대한 근본적인 물음을 스스로에게 던지곤 했다. “사람은 무엇으로 사는가?” “사람의 마음에는 무엇이 있는가?” “사람에게 주어지지 않은 것은 무엇인가?” “참된 삶의 가치는 무엇인가?”

특히 50대 이후 그는 성장하려면 고통을 체험하고 자아 성찰을 해야 한다고 믿었다.

이처럼 삶과 죽음에 대한 물음을 끊임없이 던진 결과, 그는 세 가지 중요한 결론에 이르렀다. 그 첫째는, 가장 중요한 시간은 현재라는 사실이고, 둘째는 가장 소중한 사람은 바로 내 가까이 있는 사람이며, 셋째로 가장 중요한 일은 가까이 있는 사람에게 선을 행하는 것이다.

“사람은 무엇으로 사는가?”는 어떻게 살아가야 하는지에 대한 근본적 물음을 다룬다. 이 이야기에 나오는 천사는 이렇게 말했다. “모든 사람이 살아가는 것은 자신의 행복을 위해서가 아니라 사랑이 있기 때문임을 저는 배웠습니다. 그 부부가 저를 가엾이 여겨 사랑했기에 저는 살아남았습니다. 사람은 오직 사랑으로 살아갑니다. 사랑 안에 머무르는 사람은 하느님 안에 머무르고, 하느님께서도 그 사람 안에 머무르십니다. 하느님은 사랑이시기 때문입니다.”

우리는 순간순간 만나는 사람들에게 최선을 다하기 위해 태어났다. 모든 순간을 충만하게 살고 지금 이 순간 충실하다 보면 자연스럽게 거룩한 죽음을 준비하기 마련이다.

우리는 언제 죽음이 찾아올지 모른다. 우리는 다만 언젠가 죽으리라는 사실을 떠올리며 지금 이 순간 충실하게 살아갈 뿐이다. "메멘토 모리!"

살아오면서 삶과 죽음에 대해 깊이 생각하게 한 결정적인 순간이 두 번 있었다. 한번은 고등학교를 졸업하면서 죽음에 대해 생각했는데, 그 성찰은 오히려 새로운 시작으로 이끌었다. 또 다른 결정적 순간은 코로나바이러스-19 전염병으로 온 세상이 큰 충격을 받았을 때다. 이때도 나는 순간순간을 충만하게 사는데 몰두했다.

우리가 행복하고 기쁘며 건강할 때는 충만하게 사는 것이 수월하다. 문제가 되는 것은 도전을 받을 때다. 갈등과 어려움 속에서 어떻게 하면 충만하게 살아갈 수 있을까? 톨스토이가 힘주어 말한 것처럼 이에 대한 유일한 답은 지금 이 순간 사랑하고 기도하며 사는 것이다. 지금 이 순간 이후의 모든 것은 하느님의 섭리에 달려 있다.
