Making a change 변화
Can one person make a change? Sure, each of us can change society. As in the book "L'homme qui plantait des arbes" ("The Man Who Planted Trees") written in 1953 by Jean Giono (1895-1970), one person can do something different and marvelous by being inspired and led by the Holy Spirit.
In the above-mentioned short story, Elzeard Bouffier brought a deserted valley back to life by planting one hundred thousand acorn trees for three years. The author, Jean Giono, even declined to receive any royalties for his story. He just granted it for free to anyone.
Sister Gemma Hong is such a person. For over 30 years, she has devoted herself to her ongoing mission trips to North America.
In religious life, we take turns doing certain missions. The officially given terms last for about 3 years, 5 years or 10 years in general, but some missions are sustained by one person for a longer period of time, depending on the needs of the apostolate. Doing one thing for over 30 years is enough to make a person an expert in that field.
The Korean mission, with book exhibits in the United States, started in 1989 with the initiative of Sister Susanna Yu and Sister Gemma Hong. Since then, Korean Pauline Sisters have visited the United States irregularly for the purpose of diffusion and animation up to now. Junior Sisters came to the United States in 2012 and 2015 for fruitful apostolic experiences.
In 2013, Sr. Gemma was transferred from the Korean Province to the American Province. Then, the Korean mission in the United States was approved by the General Government of our congregation in Rome. Thus, the Korean mission was able to undergo constantly with the goal of letting the light of the living words of God reach out to each Korean family in the hope of giving joy, peace and consolation.
However, the mission was suspended by the outbreak of COVID-19 from 2020 to 2022. Despite all the difficult situations, Sr. Gemma didn't give up her hopeful dreams; she organized eight book clubs with the help of Zoom.
Her original intention to make book clubs was in order to express gratitude to collaborators and to give them hope, joy, peace and consolation through sincere sharing. As she consulted all those who supported Korean book exhibits while staying at their houses, they became willing to join the book clubs.
She is always happy to select 10 books to read throughout the year, and each member devours one book a month to then share their thoughts and impressions through Zoom. Book clubs appeal to people because the first generation of immigrants can read and speak the Korean language.
Approximately more than 2 million Koreans are spread out across the United States: 10 percent of them are Catholics while 61 percent are Protestants, 6 percent are Buddhists and 23 percent follow other religions.
Thanks to the hard work and efforts of the first generation of Korean immigrants, the second generations, who were born and educated well in the United States, are more adapted to the American way of thinking and culture. Therefore, Sr. Gemma does her best to give spiritual food to Korean immigrants through book exhibits.
How to approach them through the Pauline mission challenges our mission trips across the United States and Canada.

Sister Faustina
God reveals his dynamic vitality through new sprouts and colorful buds in spring. The trees along the streets bring forth the freshest green leaves day in and day out. In their tiny and fragile sprouts and buds, God reveals his lively presence.
The extraordinary mercy and grace of God are revealed not only through sensitive nature but also through the simple and little people.
The life of Sister Faustina also testifies to the marvelous and mysterious ways of providence. Sister Faustina was born with the name Helena Kowalska in Poland on Aug. 25, 1905, as the third of 10 children to a poor and religious family.
Since childhood, she loved to pray, work hard, and obey her parents. She was also sensitive to the poor, for she was aware of the presence of divine mercy in them.
At age 7, she attended the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and felt a calling to religious life. Attending the elementary school for the third grade only, she wanted to join a convent, but her parents didn't give her permission.
At age 16, she left home to work as a housekeeper in order to support herself and to help her parents as well.
At age 19, she experienced her first vision of the Suffering Christ and departed for Warsaw to approach several convents, but she was rejected every time due to her poor appearance.
Finally, the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy accepted her on the condition that she could pay for her own religious habit.
On April 30, 1926, at age 20, she took her first religious vows with the religious name of Sr. Maria Faustina of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Then, she was sent to various communities as a cook, gardener and porter.
At age 24, she arrived in Plock, Poland but she became so weak that she was sent away to rest. Several months later, she returned to the convent.
On Feb. 22, 1931, Jesus who presented himself as the King of Divine Mercy visited her. He was wearing a white garment with red and pale rays coming from his heart. From then on, she became the apostle and secretary of God's mercy. As a doer of mercy, she was most attentive and merciful to others.
On May 1, 1933, she took her final vows and willingly offered her personal sufferings in union with Jesus to atone for the sins of others. At the same time, she brought joy and peace to others and encouraged them to totally trust in Jesus.
Contemplating mercy in the words of God and her daily activities, she was eager to perform her tasks faithfully. She was very recollected, natural, serene and kind to others.
The message of mercy that she received from Jesus is now being spread throughout the world. Her diary, "Divine Mercy in my Soul," translated into more than 20 languages, has become the handbook for devotion to Divine Mercy.
Sister Maria Faustina passed away in Krakow at age 33 on Oct. 5, 1938. She was beatified on April 18, 1993, and canonized on April 30, 2000, by Pope John Paul II. As the patron saint of God's Mercy, her feast day is celebrated on Oct. 5.
"Jesus, I trust in you" was her lifelong refrain.

Divine Mercy Sunday
Since the year 2000, on the second Sunday after Easter, we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. On April 30, 2000, Pope John Paul II proclaimed Divine Mercy Sunday and canonized Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska (1905-38).
Then, what is meant by celebrating the Divine Mercy of God and living devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in our daily lives?
First of all, I think it means to resemble the heart of Jesus. In other words, it means to live with endless love, mercy, perseverance and compassion. Second, it means to pray and embrace everything like a mother who is constantly praying and working hard for the family, while accepting various situations with goodwill and generosity. Third, it means to put into practice the glad tidings of the Good News day in and day out.
Though not explicit, the devotion to the Sacred Heart and to Divine Mercy dates back to the prophets in the Old Testament. The prophets such as Hosea, Isaiah, Ezekiel and Jeremiah already mentioned the merciful, faithful and compassionate love of God. "I will give them a heart of flesh." (Ezekiel 11:19).
In the New Testament, the sacrificing love of Jesus is presented: "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink… Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." (John 7:37-38). "One of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water." (John 19:34).
From the early church, people began to meditate on the Sacred Heart of Jesus pierced with a spear. Then, Church Fathers such as Irenaeus, Hippolytus and Cyprianus said that "the Sacred Heart of Jesus is spring of love and grace. The Sacred Heart is the endless grace."
In the early Middle Ages, the devotion to the Sacred Heart was developed as personal devotion, but in the late Middle Ages, it was developed among religious people like Birgitta, Anselm, Bernardus, Bonaventura, Matilda, Albert the Great, Gertrudis, Francis, Catherine of Siena etc.
Then, Joannes Eudes (1601-80) and Margarita Maria Alacoque (1647-90) deepened the devotion to the Sacred Heart and applied it to the Liturgy, Exposition (Holy Hour) and the Office of the Hours.
Many popes like Clement XIII, Pius IX, Leo XIII, Pius X, Pius XI, Pius 11, Pius XII, John XXIII, Paul VI and John Paul II regarded the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the synthesis of every devotion and the perfect standard for living.
In 1931, Sister Faustina, an uneducated Polish nun of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, became an apostle of mercy with her resolute refrain "Jesus, I trust in you."
The devotion to Divine Mercy includes the message of Christ's mercy, the recitation of the Divine Mercy chaplet, novena, spreading the image of Jesus of Divine Mercy, celebrating the feast of Divine Mercy, Holy Hour of great mercy, reflections and meditation on Divine Mercy, and a day of forgiveness and reconciliation for all souls.
We celebrated the extraordinary year of mercy throughout the world in 2016 because what we needed most was mercy. Now, in 2023, more than ever, we still need Divine Mercy most desperately. Especially in the continuing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, in the climate crisis, among unexpected diseases and various natural disasters, we are in dire need of endless mercy and compassion. "Lord, have mercy on us!"

Everything takes time!
Originally written in 2016
It is said that there are over 900 churches in Rome alone. When I first heard about it, I couldn't believe it. It is really incredible, but it is true. As I stroll around the streets at Rome, it is very easy to see various churches here and there. Rome is truly harmonized and colorized with diverse churches and historical sites.
What a pleasant gift it is for me to take a day off a month! Thanks to this opportunity, I recently made a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (Basilica di San Paolo Fuori le Mura), one of four ancient, major basilicas in Rome.
Building the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls was originally started by Emperor Constantine I at the site of the tomb of Saint Paul the apostle and martyr. Construction was started in 324 and completed in 1626, but unfortunately, a fire broke out in 1823. Restoration after the unexpected disaster was completed in 1854. In between those years and up to the 1900s, the original edifice was expanded, enhanced and embellished continually.
Looking back on those long, long years of the enduring history of construction, I can't but appreciate the spirit of perseverance. The church is not built within several years. With a short span of time, we can't achieve such an awesome and miraculous grandeur. Talking about the Basilica of Saint Paul alone, it took over 1,000 years to construct.
Not only the Basilica of Saint Paul but other churches as well are filled with holy images, paintings, frescoes, mosaics or sculptures. The figures of each image are so vivid and ardent that they lead us to feel something much awesome, marvelous and inspiring and thus deepen our faith. Their presentations created and weaved by a lifelong work of creation with much perseverance and sweat reveals the mysterious wonders and love of God for people.
Surely, it might have been an enduring and patient job for artists and sculptors to paint or carve on the lofty ceilings and the walls.
Furthermore, much reflection, inspiration, sacrifice, dedication, and energy are necessary to create such amazing works of art. Appreciating every single work of art in the churches, I feel the innumerable sweat and hidden efforts to realize their invisible faith and devotion in the visual arts.
Throughout the countless stories of history, Rome has become a museum itself. Roman culture itself now saves and sustains the country. Without such perseverance, they might not achieve the present inheritance and spiritual relics.
As I study the Italian language, I appreciate more about the works of art in the churches. Probably their sincere and profound longing for eternity had stimulated and inspired them to create and present various works of art.
Just before a sister in charge of on-going formation in Korea visited Rome several weeks ago, I was so much stressed with my slow steps of learning Italian that I found something was wrong with my body. Because of my weak condition, I had to take more rest and sleep to recover balance.
After a week or so, every single negative sign of my body disappeared as if nothing had happened to me. Being encouraged much, I just accepted my reality as it is without any resistance and made up for my lost studies. It helped me in many ways to experience and learn more about perseverance and humility.
In fact, deep in my heart, I was wondering whether it is worth continuing my studies or not. Since I studied English long ago, I thought I could master Italian within several months, but I realized it was an ambition. Like building the church over a long period of time with much perseverance and a long-term view, studying something new always takes much time, effort, sacrifice and self-control.
Life itself takes time. Everything takes time. Being in a hurry and doing something quick always make more trouble. Look at Rome! The whole city is a lifelong work of art established throughout thousands of the enduring moments of life, love, hope, faith, joy and gratitude. Now people from all over the world come to pay respect and appreciate the culture of Rome. The enduring time proves it.

Eat well 잘 먹으세요
"Eat well!" Our old Italian missionary sisters used to advise us, living in the community. They said the founders of our order also suggested we eat well if we want to grow deep in our vocations.
In fact, eating is one of the basic needs to exist and work every day. I also think that eating well is most fundamental in life, especially when we live alone. Without having a nutritious, healthy and balanced diet, how can we sustain ourselves and survive in the world?
In the past, religious people, especially ascetics, were more concerned about the practice of self-control, moderation, sacrifice, renunciation, self-denial and detachment. But nowadays, we are also mindful of taking care of the self well as the basic step of loving God and others.
Even when discerning the will of God in terms of individual vocation, the most fundamental point is the capacity of loving one's self and God.
Many people with goodwill and vision help us in many ways so that we can be free from concerns about food. So, they keep bringing necessities from time to time.
We also go to the wholesale markets to get some food once a month or so. Those generous markets are willing to donate vegetables and fruits, especially to circulate the products before the expiration date. Donating ahead of throwing away is always a wise and good way of utilizing the items.
So, each of us is grateful for all the foods we are receiving and eating every day with the help of providence. With heartfelt thanks to our benefactors and cooperators, we try not to waste cooking ingredients.
Together with two postulants, 11 sisters of the Congregation of the Daughters of St. Paul are living together in the so-called pilot community. Living together in a great number means we need more food, necessities and money to pay for living expenses.
Nonetheless, we hardly worry about anything, for the providence of God is always bestowed upon our needs. Especially in the U.S., a strong spirit of donation is very active and alive. A sensibility of generosity with goodwill flows over constantly in society.
With the given ingredients, we take turns cooking one meal a day. Except for supper, we eat simply at breakfast and we are free to take whatever we want at lunch. In general, we make use of leftover foods for lunch.
When I eat alone, I take simply without several side dishes. It is always beautiful to see that the elder sisters cook for themselves willingly when necessary. Since they know what they need and what is good for themselves, they prepare and eat appropriately. A sense of independence and self-reliant spirit are most active in their mentalities.
When basic needs are not met, we can be weakened both spiritually and physically. Israelites complained about their miserable situation saying, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food." (Numbers 21:5).
Jesus said, "Do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on…… Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." (Matthew 6:25, 32-33).

Gateway Arch
In the beginning, everyone in the world used the same language. So, it was easy for people to agree and to build "a city and a tower with its top in the sky." But God knew their intentions and confused their speech. As a result, they were scattered over the earth.
Constructing something big, tall or long might be quite an adventurous challenge to try. For various reasons, people keep building something different and new.
Not only the United States but other countries such as United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Russia, Vietnam, Kuwait and Indonesia have built lofty skyscrapers.
In Missouri, there is another type of skyscraper called the Gateway Arch. Among 400 national parks in the U.S., the Gateway Arch National Park is a must to see because of the Gateway Arch, which stands at 630 feet. Its height and base width are all 630 feet.
In order to arrive at the top of the Gateway Arch, we had to take a tram ride to its observation deck. Thanks to the Book Club members who recently visited our community in Saint Louis, I could go up to the top of the Gateway Arch.
The Gateway Arch, designed to sway up to 18 inches in high winds or during an earthquake, is a world-renowned masterpiece of modern architecture, which has been built on the banks of the Mississippi River.
Rising from a forested park, the Gateway Arch, located in the middle of the U.S., is a part of the national historic site created in 1935 to commemorate the role of St. Louis in westward expansion.
Originally founded as a French fur trading post in 1764, St. Louis prospered because of its central location. Naturally, it grew as an economic and manufacturing center. St. Louis is a city where the European newcomers participated in travel and trade networks that American Indians had used for centuries.
In 1947, a national competition challenged many architects to design a memorial to evoke the grand scale and drama of the nation's westward expansion. Among 172 proposals, the judges chose the Arch of Eero Saarinen (1910-1961), an architect and industrial designer who was born in Finland and emigrated to the U.S. in 1923.
Just to create the memorial, 40 blocks of old buildings were leveled in the core of the downtown area. The structure of the Gateway Arch, built between 1963 and 1965, is made of stainless steel on the outside, carbon steel on the inside and concrete in the middle. The Arch combined engineering, materials and technology to create the iconic and daring structure. In this way, the planning team of the Gateway Arch tried to express their American identity.
Whenever I pass by the Gateway Arch along the streets, its height reminds me of our constant longing to go beyond our human limits. In Genesis 28:10-22, Jacob, in his dream, saw the stairway stretching from heaven to earth, with Angels going up and down on it…
Would that ladder lead us to the spiritual heaven? Would the tallest arch or tower let us feel proud of ourselves and give us true happiness? What kind of ladder do I now climb to reach the spiritual virtues?

‘My other self’
"My Other Self: Conversations with Christ on Living Your Faith" is a spiritual classic written by Clarence Joseph Enzler (1910-1976). This book was first published in 1940 under the title of "My Other Self in which Christ speaks to the soul on living His Life." Since then, it has become a steady seller, and its Korean translation also came out in 2015.
Modeled on the 15th-century classic "The Imitation of Christ" (Following the Christ) by Thomas a Kempis (1380-1471), this inspirational book helps Christians today hear the voice of Christ who addresses readers personally as "my other self."
Through a creative, devout and profound dialogue between Jesus and readers, Clarence Enzler leads us to go through the journey of the Christian life, beginning with the call to live in friendship with Christ and fulfill His holy desire. Written in the form of a dialogue between Jesus and readers, "My Other Self" urges us to embody God's love and compassion for others.
The book is divided into three parts: the call, the means and the end. The first part invites us to live in friendship with Christ, ultimately leading to change in our lives. The second part leads us to discover the graces and tools we need to grow closer to Christ, such as detachment, virtue, humility, prayer, the Eucharist and Mass, sacrifice and the avoidance of sin. The third part invites us to learn where this journey with Christ will take us and the eternal joys that await us.
Each chapter includes short but eloquent and devotional meditations on scripture and prayers. The goal of the journey is a life of union with Christ and complete joy in eternity. The key point of this book is faith that helps us to build an intimate relationship with God. All in all, the Christian life is a life of faith that trusts in Jesus who gave himself for us and who will never stop loving us.
Born in 1910 in Dubuque, Iowa, Clarence J. Enzler studied at Columbia University and held a doctorate in Sociology from the Catholic University of America. He was always a spiritual person who thought about the priesthood before he met his wife.
He struggled with being a stutterer but he eventually overcame the speech impediment while raising a family. For 32 years from 1937 to 1972, he worked full-time as a speechwriter in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He wrote speeches for eight different secretaries of agriculture under six different presidents.
Being a prolific author, he wrote four religious books and reflections in his spare time. He is best known for his classic Lenten devotional booklet "Everyone's Way of the Cross," which was first published in 1970.
He was ordained a deacon in the Archdiocese of Washington in 1972 and had the privilege of giving the homily at his priest son's first Mass in 1973. Enzler and his wife Kathleen Crowley Enzler had thirteen children. Enzler served in St. Mary, Mother of God Catholic Church in Washington until his death in 1976 at age 66.
"My Other Self" is much more than a meditation on Christian living and a discursive monologue by Jesus. With the mysterious, gentle and compassionate voice of Christ, it can be steady reassurance and advice for a confused and anxious world filled with various crises.

"My Other Self: Conversations with Christ on Living Your Faith"(나의 또 다른 자아: 신앙생활에 대해 그리스도와 나눈 대화)는 클래런스 J. 엔즐러(1910-1976)의 영적 고전이다. 이 책은 "My Other Self in which Christ speaks to the soul on living His Life”(신앙생활을 하는 것에 대해 그리스도께서 영혼에게 말씀하시는 나의 또 다른 자아"라는 제목으로 1940년에 처음 출간되었다.
