‘Throwing aside the cloak’ 겉옷을 벗어 던지고

“Throwing aside the cloak” was recently published by Catholic book publisher, Pauline. The original title is “Nascere di nuovo” (to be born again) written by Gaetano Piccolo, an Italian Jesuit priest. It deals with the journey of inner healing and lays out nine steps to be born anew spiritually at a turning point in one's life.

The author of the book introduces the readers to various biblical characters such as Bartimaeus, Nicodemus, a sick person at a pool called Bethesda, Naaman, Lazaro, a woman caught committing adultery, a man born blind and others more. Among them, Bartimaeus caught my attention.

The story of Bartimaeus, a blind man, tells us that he threw his cloak aside after encountering Jesus as told in Mark 10:46-52. It is a beautiful story about healing that invites us to experience the gradual process of inner transformation.

In Jericho, Jesus met Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus sat by the roadside, begging. Many people told him to be silent, but he kept crying out all the more: “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.”

Finally, Jesus stopped and called him over. Bartimaeus worked up the courage, got up and threw his cloak aside. He sprang up and headed toward Jesus. He was so desperate to see again.

“What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

“Master, I want to see,” Bartimaeus said.

“Go your way; your faith has saved you,” Jesus responded.

Immediately, Bartimaeus regained his sight. He was born again.

Like Bartimaeus, we should also be willing to throw our cloak aside. The cloak represents one's material possessions, status, old life, comfort, security, stubbornness, prejudice, fear, judgment, authority or various masks. Without letting them go, they can hold us back from going through the progressive journey of inner healing toward freedom.

Only when we fully face and accept the broken pieces of our lives, our shattered dreams and broken relationships and entrust everything to God, can we begin again and dream of hope.

Even broken dishes can be made whole and beautiful again. Through the art form "Kintsugi," broken pottery is repaired by gluing the pieces together with gold and silver seams. This method treats breakage and repairs as something more special and precious without disguising a piece's “brokenness.”

When the breaks or chips are adorned in gold, imperfection turns into something more beautiful. Putting the broken pieces of life together is the grace of God. Recovery of friendship and trust, a life of giving freely and a spirit of resilience lead us to renew ourselves and our relationships with others.

“There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” This verse comes from “Anthem,” sung by Leonard Cohen (1934-2016).

“The birds they sang / At the break of day / Start again / I heard them say / Don’t dwell on what has passed away / Or what is yet to be.”

“Ah, the wars they will be fought again / The holy dove, she will be caught again / Bought and sold, and bought again / The dove is never free.”

“Ring the bells that still can ring / Forget your perfect offering / There is a crack, a crack in everything / That’s how the light gets in……”

Truly, flaws, vulnerabilities, failures and chaos are necessary for spiritual growth and inner mildness.

겉옷을 벗어 던지고 ‘Throwing aside the cloak’

“겉옷을 벗어 던지고”라는 책이 최근 바오로딸출판사에서 나왔다. 예수회 가에타노 피콜로 신부가 쓴 이 책의 원제는 “Nascere di nuovo,” 곧 “다시 태어나기 위해”이다. 이 책은 내적 치유의 여정을 다룬 것으로, 인생의 전환점에서 영적으로 새롭게 태어나도록 도와주는 아홉 단계를 제시한다.

이 책의 저자는 바르티매오, 니코데모, 벳자타 못 가의 병자, 나아만, 라자로, 간음하다 잡힌 여인, 태어날 때부터 눈먼 이 등 다양한 성경 인물을 소개한다. 그 가운데 바르티매오 이야기가 눈길을 끈다.

마르코복음 10장 46-52절이 말하듯 눈먼 바르티매오는 예수님을 만난 다음 겉옷을 벗어 던졌다. 이처럼 아름다운 치유 이야기는 점진적으로 일어나는 내적 변화의 여정을 체험하게 한다.

예수님은 예리코에서 바르티매오를 만났는데, 그는 길가에 앉아 구걸하고 있었다. 많은 사람이 그에게 잠자코 있으라고 했지만, 그는 한층 큰 소리로 “다윗의 자손 예수님, 저에게 자비를 베풀어 주십시오.” 하고 소리 높여 말했다.

마침내 예수님은 걸음을 멈추고 바르티매오를 불렀다. 바르티매오는 용기를 내어 일어나 겉옷을 벗어 던지고 벌떡 일어나 예수님께 다가갔다. 다시 볼 수 있기를 간절히 바랐던 것이다.

“내가 너에게 무엇을 해 주기를 바라느냐?” 예수님이 그에게 물으셨다.

“스승님, 제가 다시 볼 수 있게 해 주십시오.” 바르티매오가 대답했다.

“가거라. 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였다.” 예수님이 대답하셨다.

곧바로 바르티매오는 다시 보게 되었다. 거듭 난 것이다.

바르티매오처럼 우리도 기꺼이 겉옷을 벗어 던져야 하리라. 겉옷은 물질적 소유, 지위, 옛 생활, 안락함, 안전, 완고함, 편견, 두려움, 판단, 권위 또는 여러 가면을 상징한다. 이러한 것들을 내려 놓지 않으면 점진적인 내적 치유를 통해 자유롭게 되는 여정에 걸림돌이 될 수 있다.

우리 삶의 부서진 조각들, 깨진 꿈들, 끊어진 관계들을 온전히 직면하고 받아들이며 모든 것을 하느님께 내어 맡길 때 우리는 비로소 다시 시작하며 새롭게 희망을 꿈꿀 수 있다.

깨진 그릇도 온전하고 아름다운 모습으로 다시 복원될 수 있다. '킨츠기'라는 예술 기법은 깨진 도자기를 금이나 은가루로 이어 붙여 수리한다. 이 방법은 부서진 부분을 감추지 않고 수리함으로써 한층 특별하고 소중한 모습으로 거듭 나게 한다.

깨지거나 조각난 자리에 금가루를 입혀 이어 붙이면, 불완전함은 한층 아름다운 자태로 변모한다. 삶의 부서진 조각들을 다시 모아 놓는 것, 그것은 바로 하느님이 우리에게 베푸시는 은총이다. 우정과 신뢰의 회복, 아낌없이 베푸는 삶, 회복력을 자아내는 정신은 우리 자신은 물론 이웃과의 관계를 새롭게 한다.

"모든 것엔 갈라진 틈이 있어. 빛은 바로 그 틈새로 들어와."라는 구절은 레너드 코헨(1934-2016)이 부른 "Anthem(송가)"이라는 노래에 나온다.

"새들은 하루를 시작하며 노래해. 다시 시작하라는 새들의 속삭임이 들리네. 지나가 버린 것, 앞으로 다가올 것에 머물지 마.”

"아, 전쟁이 다시 일어나 서로 싸우겠지. 거룩한 비둘기가 다시 잡혀 사고 팔리겠지. 비둘기는 결코 자유롭지 못해."

"종소리가 울려퍼질 때까지 종을 울려. 완벽함일랑 잊어버려. 모든 것엔 갈라진 틈이 있기 마련. 빛은 바로 그 틈새로 들어와......"

참으로 결점과 취약성, 실패와 혼돈은 영적 성장을 이루고 온유한 마음을 지니는데 꼭 필요한 삶의 부분들이다.
