“The Very Special Moment,” a collection of homilies for healing retreat by the Rev. Anthony Saji, was published by Pauline in 2013. The second volume of his homilies, titled “Moments of Healing,” was also published by Pauline in 2021.

This year, his third book, called “Moments of Grace,” was published by Pauline again.

So far, Father Anthony has visited Korea 11 times to lead the silent healing retreat with Mary. From the very start, Jesuit priest Ryu Hae-wook, who translated three of Father Anthony's books, accompanied the silent healing retreat. Thanks to his constant participation, Father Ryu has become a faithful fan.

Father Ryu suffered a stroke in 2013. As a result, he is not able to move the right part of his body. Despite this, he continues to be immersed in writing and translating, using his left hand.

“Moments of Grace” is a collection of 18 spiritual homilies from Father Anthony. Whenever he gives a homily, he always carries the Bible with him and quotes the necessary biblical verses that come to his mind with the help of the Holy Spirit. His intuition and inspiration are deeply rooted in the words of God and the appropriate use of various parables.

No matter how many times I read his book, I never get bored. In one of his homilies, “God’s activity,” he shares the story of an old donkey that fell into a deep well, a well-known parable about resilience.

The story involves a man who raised a hardworking donkey. He used the donkey to carry luggage. The donkey carried the luggage to town three or four times a day. Thanks to the diligent and hardworking donkey, the man was able to earn a lot of money. But as time went by, the donkey became so old and weak that he could no longer carry any luggage.

When coming back to the village one evening, the donkey fell into a dry well.

When the owner heard about this, he said, “The donkey is so old that it is useless now. Furthermore, the well is dry and cumbersome. So, rather than taking the donkey out of the well, it would be better to fill the well with dirt and make it a grave for the donkey.”

So the workers began to fill the well with dirt and little stones. As dirt and stones fell upon the donkey, it started running inside because of the pain. His constant movement made the dirt compact and the ground flat. In the end, the donkey was able to use the flattened ground to get out of the well. The village people underestimated the donkey’s strength and intelligence.

The story of the donkey teaches us a lesson on why we do not have to give up. While negativity and critical judgment, like dirt and stones, can bury us, we can still shake them off and rise up. Obstacles, difficult situations and adversity can become a steady foothold and a stepping stone that could allow us to go forward.

When somebody throws dirt or stones, we can still overcome them. When we stop, God begins to work miracles. When we entrust everything to God, He does mighty deeds. Truly, every moment of our lives is the path to the grace. Be still!

안토니오 사지 신부의 침묵 치유피정 강론 모음인 “아주 특별한 순간”이 2013년 바오로딸에서 출간되었다. 그의 두 번째 강론 모음인 “치유의 순간” 또한 2021년 바오로딸에서 나왔다.

올해 들어 그의 세 번째 책인 “은총의 순간”이 또다시 바오로딸에서 나왔다.

안토니오 신부는 지금까지 한국을 11차례 방문하여 성모님과 함께하는 침묵 치유피정을 이끌었다. 안토니오 신부의 책 세 권을 모두 번역한 예수회 류해욱 신부는 안토니오 신부가 이끈 침묵 치유피정 여정에 처음부터 꾸준히 함께해 왔다. 이처럼 항구한 참여 덕분에 류해욱 신부는 안토니오 신부의 열렬한 팬이 되었다.

류해욱 신부는 2013년 뇌졸중으로 쓰러져 몸의 오른쪽 부분을 움직일 수 없게 되었지만, 왼손으로 글을 쓰고 번역하는 일에 몰두하고 있다.

“은총의 순간”에는 안토니오 신부의 영적 강론 18편이 담겨 있다. 그는 강론할 때마다 늘 성경을 가지고 다니며 성령의 도움으로 마음에 떠오르는 성경 구절을 인용한다. 그의 직관과 영감은 하느님 말씀과 여러 비유의 적절한 사용에 깊이 뿌리내리고 있다.

그의 책은 아무리 읽어도 전혀 지루하지 않다. 그의 강론 가운데 하나인 "하느님의 활동"에서 그는 깊은 우물에 빠진 늙은 당나귀 이야기를 들려주는데, 이는 회복력에 대해 널리 알려진 우화다.

이 이야기는 부지런한 당나귀를 키운 사람에 대한 것이다. 그는 당나귀에 짐을 실어 운반하는 일을 했다. 당나귀는 하루에 서너 번 짐을 싣고 마을을 오갔다. 이처럼 열심히 일한 당나귀 덕분에 그는 많은 돈을 벌 수 있었다. 그런데 시간이 흐르면서 당나귀는 늙고 약해져 더는 짐을 나를 수 없게 되었다.

어느 날 저녁 마을로 돌아오던 당나귀는 그만 메마른 우물에 빠지고 말았다.

당나귀가 우물에 빠진 이야기를 들은 당나귀 주인은 이렇게 말했다. “당나귀는 이제 너무 늙어 쓸모가 없어. 게다가 우물은 메말라 보기도 흉해. 그러니 당나귀를 우물에서 꺼내는 것보다 차라리 우물을 흙으로 메워 당나귀의 무덤으로 만드는 게 낫겠어.”

그래서 일꾼들은 우물에 흙과 작은 돌을 넣기 시작했다. 흙과 돌이 떨어지자, 당나귀는 너무 아파 우물 안에서 뛰기 시작했다. 당나귀의 끊임없는 움직임으로 흙이 단단하게 다져져 땅이 고르게 되었다. 마침내 당나귀는 평평해진 땅을 딛고 우물 밖으로 나올 수 있었다. 마을 사람들은 당나귀의 힘과 지혜를 과소평가했던 것이다.

이 당나귀 이야기는 우리에게 포기하지 말아야 할 이유를 일깨운다. 부정적 생각과 비판적 판단은 흙과 돌처럼 우리를 짓누르며 묻어버릴 수 있지만, 우리는 그러한 것들을 떨쳐내고 다시 일어설 수 있다. 걸림돌과 어려운 상황과 역경은 오히려 우리를 앞으로 나아가게 하는 든든한 발판이자 디딤돌이 될 수 있다.

누군가 우리에게 흙이나 돌을 던질 때 우리는 여전히 이겨낼 수 있다. 우리가 멈추어 설 때, 하느님은 기적을 행하기 시작한다. 우리가 모든 것을 하느님께 내어 맡길 때, 하느님은 놀라운 일들을 행하신다. 참으로 우리 삶의 모든 순간은 은총으로 가는 통로다. 멈추어라!

“너희는 멈추고 내가 하느님임을 알아라!”(시편 46,11)

“주님께서 너희를 위하여 싸워 주실 터이니, 너희는 잠자코 있기만 하여라.”(탈출 14,14)
