Creating your spiritual path 영적 여정 만들기

Sr. Barbara Gerace is the eldest sister in our community. Going toward her 80s, she is a bit worried about her condition but she is still eager to be part of a book club with Rev. John Johnson, a retired Archdiocesan priest in Missouri.

For September, Sr. Barbara has selected “Plan of Life: Habits to Help You Grow Closer to God” by Roger J. Landry, a priest from the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts. She chose this book for group reading because it offers guidance on how to deepen our prayer life.

Each of us aspires to be better. So, we do our best every day. How can we change ourselves? How can we become transformed into a new person? Can we change the society and the world as well?

At the end of each year's Spiritual Exercises, I take time to outline my life project, and this year was no different. I made an effort to plan more concretely, but I still find myself struggling with the daily steps needed to implement my project. Maintaining the discipline required for this journey demands a great deal of perseverance.

Whenever I ponder on the topic of planning, the urban planning of Singapore comes to my mind. The city state, through infrastructure development and an integrated planning process, realized a three-tiered planning framework that consists of a long-term plan (concept), a master plan (for the medium term) and short-term plans. Thus, Singaporeans study their planning thoroughly and try seriously before applying it for the ultimate realization.

“Plan of Life: Habits to help you grow closer to God” helps us to plan our spiritual life. If we want to achieve something, we surely need a concrete, practical and accessible plan. Furthermore, we have to discipline ourselves constantly with mindful will, enduring hope and dreams.

When discussing changes, particularly within the Catholic Church, we often hear about the concepts of New Evangelization and Eucharistic Revival. These themes are frequently highlighted in conversations and initiatives aimed at revitalizing the faith community.

As Fr. Landry notes in the book, one of the surest paths to transformation is living a Christ-centered life in communion with the Trinity. To be like Jesus, to follow Jesus, to imitate Jesus and to love God and others, are the ultimate goals of our Christian lives, whether Catholics or not.

From this perspective, he suggests the basic habits for becoming holier: following the Holy Spirit, living a heroic moment like choosing to get out of bed immediately, offering the morning prayer to start a new day, having the general exam or evaluation to end a day well, praying regularly, living the Bible messages, attending Sunday Mass, making confession to be forgiven, living charity and almsgiving with compassion, etc.

He also suggests several points beyond the basic habits such as Eucharistic practices through attending daily Mass and receiving spiritual communion, Marian devotions and Penitential practices like fasting to live in constant conversion.

Several other suggestions include bringing everything into harmony to grow in virtue and to root out bad habits, having unity of life by giving time to God, spiritual reading, retreats or days of recollection and having Christian attitudes to be holier.

Last but not least, he concludes his book with the glad tidings of joy: “The fruit of living a plan of life is joy or cheerfulness."

영적 여정 만들기 Creating your spiritual path

바르바라 저레이스 수녀님은 우리 공동체에서 연세가 가장 많으시다. 80대에 접어드는 수녀님은 자신의 건강 상태에 대해 염려하면서도 미주리주 대교구의 은퇴 사제인 존 존슨 신부님과 함께 북 클럽을 열정적으로 진행하신다.

9월에 바르바라 수녀님은 매사추세츠주 폴 리버 교구에 속한 로저 J. 랜드리 신부가 쓴 "삶의 계획: 하느님과 더 가까워지도록 돕는 습관들"이라는 책을 선정했다. 북 클럽 독서용으로 이 책을 선택한 까닭은 기도 생활을 깊이는 방법을 제시하기 때문이다.

우리는 저마다 더 나아지기를 갈망하며 나날이 최선을 다한다. 어떻게 하면 우리 자신을 바꿀 수 있을까? 어떻게 하면 새로운 사람으로 변화될 수 있을까? 우리가 과연 사회와 세상을 바꿀 수 있을까?

해마다 대피정을 끝낼 무렵 나는 시간을 내어 내 삶의 계획을 세운다. 올해도 한결같이 계획을 세웠다. 좀더 구체적으로 계획하려고 애썼지만 나는 여전히 계획을 실천하는 일에 어려움을 겪는다. 영적 여정을 걸어가기 위해 자신을 단련하려면 참 많은 끈기가 필요하다.

계획에 대해 고심할 때마다 싱가포르의 도시 계획이 떠오른다. 도시 국가인 싱가포르는 인프라(기본 설계) 개발과 통합된 기획 과정을 통해 장기 계획(컨셉)과 마스터 플랜(기본 계획), 단기 계획들로 이루어진 3단계 기획 프레임워크(작업 구조)를 실현했다. 따라서 싱가포르인들은 무엇보다 기획안을 철저히 연구하여 최종적으로 실현하기 전에 주의 깊게 적용하며 시도를 거듭한다.

"삶의 계획: 하느님과 더 가까워지도록 돕는 습관들”은 우리 자신의 영적 삶을 계획하도록 돕는다. 무언가를 이루려면 구체적이고 실질적이며 접근 가능한 계획을 세워야 한다. 더욱이 우리는 깨어 있는 의지와 한결같은 희망과 꿈을 지니고 끊임없이 우리 자신을 단련해야 한다.

특히 가톨릭 교회 안에서 변화에 대해 논의할 때, 우리는 흔히 새 복음화와 성체성사의 회복이라는 개념에 대해 듣는다. 이 주제들은 신앙 공동체에 활력을 불러일으키는 것을 목표로 하는 대화와 창안 들에서 자주 부각된다.

랜드리 신부가 언급했듯이 변화를 향한 가장 확실한 길 가운데 하나는 그리스도를 중심으로 삼위일체와 하나되는 삶을 사는 것이다. 예수님을 닮고 따르며 예수님을 본받아 하느님과 이웃을 사랑하는 것은 가톨릭 신자이든 아니든 모든 그리스도인 삶의 궁극적 목표다.

이러한 관점에서 랜드리 신부는 한층 거룩해지기 위해 기본이 되는 습관들을 제안한다. 성령을 따르는 것, 잠자리에서 곧바로 일어나려고 선택하는 것과 같은 영웅적 순간을 살아내는 것, 새로운 하루를 시작하기 위해 아침 기도 바치는 것, 하루를 잘 마무리하기 위해 성찰하는 것, 규칙적으로 기도하는 것, 성경 말씀을 살아가는 것, 주일 미사에 참례하는 것, 고해성사를 통해 용서받는 것, 사랑으로 살아가며 자비로이 자선하는 것 등이다.

그는 또한 기본적으로 우리가 지녀야 할 습관 외에 신앙인으로서 간직해야 할 몇 가지 사항을 덧붙인다. 매일 미사에 참례하여 성체를 받아 모시며 성체적으로 살아가기, 성모 신심 지니기, 끊임없이 회심하며 살아가기 위해 단식하기 등이다.

이 밖에도 그는 모든 것의 균형을 이루어 덕을 키우고 나쁜 습관을 없애기, 하느님께 시간을 바침으로써 삶을 조화롭게 통합하기, 영적 독서하기, 피정하기, 한층 거룩해지는 그리스도인다운 태도 지니기 등을 제안한다.

마지막으로 그는 기쁨을 주제로 한 반가운 메시지로 책을 마무리한다. "삶의 계획에 따라 살아가는 순간들의 열매는 기쁨, 곧 쾌활함이다."

영적 삶에서 한층 진보하길 바라는가? 그렇다면 영적 여정을 이끌어주는 단계별 계획에 따라 걸어가는 것에 대해 생각해 보라.

Dreams and Journeys 꿈과 여정

Each of us has dreams. Dreams motivate and inspire us to pursue our goals constantly with hope and perseverance. Dreams let us go beyond limits. So, we go on our journey day in and day out.

One of the good examples of living faithfully with dreams would be Sister Gemma who has many dreams. One of her dreams was to publish a collection of faith stories written by various immigrants.

Dedicating her life to the spiritual welfare of immigrants, she has met many immigrants while doing her mission with book exhibits and book clubs. Encountering various people and listening to their touching stories, she prayed for each of them most sincerely. One day, she felt that she was inspired by the Blessed Mother Mary to make a book out of their stories.

So, she began to collect stories from people and edited them with the help of a volunteer editor. In the end, God listened to her faithful prayer, and she recently published a book, titled “Dreams and Journeys: Stories of Korean Immigrants in North America.”

A total of 60 contributors are living at present from Montreal at the eastern tip of Canada to San Diego at the southern tip of the western United States, and from Vancouver in southwestern Canada to Miami at the southeastern tip of the United States. Symbolically, the book covers all sides of North America.

As a collection of 60 articles of immigrants who have experienced God’s love and mercy while undergoing their spiritual journeys in various fields, “Dreams and Journeys” shares their adventurous dreams, courageous challenges, heartbreaking failure and frustration, beautiful reconciliation and forgiveness, inspiring hope and gratitude.

Colomba living in Denver, CO., shares her life of faith that grew through marathons: “My life changed little by little. I began to accept everything as it is and think positively about everything. I began to exercise early in the morning and go to bed early at night, and my old insomnia disappeared. After that, I ran several marathons…”

Archbishop Thomas Wenski in the Archdiocese of Miami says in his introductory letter to this book:

“Immigration is a drama that each of us has participated in one way or another, for immigration is a lived reality for most Americans. Even those of us born in this country can find stories in our own families of parents, grandparents or great-grandparents leaving the ‘old country’ for the promise of America."

He also said, "A tree, even if transplanted to new soil, can grow, and produce rich fruits if its roots are protected and tended to. Like skin protects the body from disease and injury, culture protects people. So too, the various national groups and ethnicities can grow and prosper in the ‘new soil’ of America if, even while adapting to the conditions of the new country, they preserve and protect their cultural roots.”

Sr. Gemma believes that an immigrant's life is “a life woven together with God.” So, she hopes this book would provide “a story for someone to return to the Lord who gives strength, hope, courage, blessings and life.”

Surely as a touching and inspiring guide for everybody, especially those preparing for immigrant life, “Dreams and Journeys” will give strength, courage and hope to those who appreciate each story, whether believer or non-believer.

“Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. Your every act should be done with love.” (1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

꿈과 여정 Dreams and Journeys 우리는 저마다 꿈을 지니고 산다. 꿈은 우리에게 동기를 부여하고 영감을 주어 한결같이 희망을 품고 끈기있게 목표를 추구하게 한다. 꿈은 우리 자신의 한계를 넘어서게 하여 우리는 날마다 삶의 여정을 걸어간다.

꿈을 품고 충실하게 살아가는 좋은 예 가운데 하나는 많은 꿈을 지닌 젬마 수녀다. 수녀님의 꿈 가운데 하나는 다양한 이민자들의 신앙 체험기를 모아 책을 펴내는 것이었다.

이주민들의 영적 행복을 위해 헌신한 수녀님은 도서 보급과 북 클럽 모임으로 선교 사명을 수행하면서 많은 이주민들을 만났다. 여러 이주민들이 나누어준 감동적인 이야기를 귀담아들은 수녀님은 그들 한 사람 한 사람을 위해 진심으로 기도했다. 그러던 어느 날, 수녀님은 성모님께서 이주민들의 이야기를 담은 책을 만들라고 영감을 주신다고 느꼈다.

그리하여 젬마 수녀님은 이주민들의 체험담을 모으기 시작했고 마침내 자원봉사자의 도움을 받아 책을 편집했다. 마침내 하느님께서 충실한 수녀님의 기도를 들으시어 "꿈과 여정: 북미주 한인 이민자들의 체험기"라는 책이 최근 출간되었다.

이 책에 글을 낸 60명의 기고자들은 현재 캐나다 동부 끝자락에 있는 몬트리올에서 미국 서쪽 끝에 있는 샌디에고까지, 캐나다 서북부에 있는 밴쿠버에서 미국 동남부 끝인 마이애미에 이르기까지 살고 있다. 이 책은 상징적으로 북미주의 모든 지역을 망라한다.

다양한 삶의 터전에서 영적 여정을 거치며 하느님의 사랑과 자비를 체험한 이민자들이 쓴 60편의 글을 담은 "꿈과 여정"은 모험 가득한 꿈, 용감한 도전, 가슴 아픈 실패와 좌절, 아름다운 화해와 용서, 영감을 주는 희망, 감사하는 마음을 나눈다.

콜로라도주 덴버에 사는 골롬바는 마라톤을 통해 성장한 자신의 신앙 생활을 다음과 같이 나눈다. "서서히 내 생활에도 변화가 왔다. 모든 것을 있는 그대로 받아들이고 매사를 긍정적으로 생각하는 마음이 생기고 아침 일찍 운동을 시작하고 저녁에 일찍 잠자리 들게 되어 오래된 불면증도 없어졌다. 그 후에도 나는 여러 마라톤 대회에서 뛰었다…”

마이애미 대교구의 토마스 웬스키 대주교는 이 책에 보낸 인사말에서 이렇게 말한다.

“이민은 우리 각자가 어떤 식으로든 참여해 온 드라마입니다. 이민은 대부분의 미국인들에게 생생한 현실이기 때문입니다. 이 나라에서 태어난 우리들조차도 미국의 약속을 위해 ‘옛 나라’를 떠나는 부모, 조부모, 증조부모의 가족에게서 그 이야기를 찾을 수 있습니다.”

“나무는 새 땅에 옮겨 심더라도 뿌리를 잘 보호하고 가꾸면 잘 자랄 수 있고 풍성한 열매를 맺을 수 있습니다. 피부가 질병과 부상으로부터 신체를 보호하는 것처럼 문화는 사람을 보호합니다. 마찬가지로 한인 가족들도 새로운 나라의 상황에 적응하면서도 자신들의 문화적 뿌리를 보존하고 보호한다면 미국의 ‘새 땅’에서 성장하고 번영할 수 있습니다.”

젬마 수녀님은 이민 생활이 “하느님과 함께 엮어가는 삶”이라고 믿기에 이 책이 "다른 누군가에게 이야기가 되어 주님께로 다시 나아가게 하는 힘, 희망과 용기를 주고, 축복과 생명을 가져다주는 계기”가 되길 바란다.

"꿈과 여정"은 모든 사람, 특히 이민 생활을 준비하는 사람들에게 감동과 영감을 주는 길잡이로 신자든 비신자든 이야기에 맛들이는 이들에게 힘과 용기, 희망을 줄 것이다.

“깨어 있으십시오. 믿음 안에 굳게 서 있으십시오. 용기를 내십시오. 힘을 내십시오. 여러분이 하는 모든 일이 사랑으로 이루어지게 하십시오.”(1코린 16,13-14)

‘Emerald Necklace’ 에메랄드 네크리스

Scorching heat mixed with strong sunlight and high humidity affects our daily lives. My nephew living in Daegu says that he feels almost like he's in a hot frying pan. The heat wave is spread all over the world.

In such hot summer weather, walking under the trees in a forest is one way to be refreshed. Because of this refreshing benefit of trees, preserving nature and creating green spaces has been one of the challenging tasks to make the globe a better place to live.

I imagine that the vast fields and lands once created endless networks of jungles filled with trees, plants, flowers, streams, lakes, ponds and rocks.

However, under the constant influence of civilization, many green spaces have been developed and cultivated for other purposes. Despite much development here and there, it is good to see that green spaces are maintained thanks to mindful people with goodwill.

People with spiritual vision, especially ecologists and environmentalists, have constantly made efforts to protect nature from further damage. Thanks to their goodwill and inspiring vision, we can still appreciate and enjoy the beauty of the marvelous nature around us.

One day, when I took a walk in Brookline near Boston, I came across Fairsted, a Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site!

Out of curiosity, I read a profile of Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) introduced in a leaflet and found out that he was a great environmentalist with a promising vision and inspiring goodwill.

Olmsted was the first landscape architect in America, whose celebrated designs include Central Park in New York City, Biltmore Estate in Ashville, N.C., the World’s Fair in Chicago, the Capitol Grounds, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Riverside in Illinois and Stanford University in California.

As the nation’s premier park maker and designer, he moved to a farmhouse in Brookline, Mass., in 1883, and created the five-mile trails called the Emerald Necklace covering the linked paths from Franklin Park, Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Pond, Olmsted Park and Muddy River to Back Bay Fens.

The Emerald Necklace is a grand parkway connecting the heart of the city with the pastoral and picturesque rural scenery of the suburbs. Olmsted had a vision for creating the necklace in nature to give people a “lovely dale gently winding between low wooded slopes, giving a broad expanse of unbroken turf, lost in the distance.” He dreamed that everybody could escape from the industrialized urban society through the space.

He believed that “no great town can long exist without great suburbs.” He thought that our body and spirit could be healed through a close relationship with nature. Truly, we need some quiet places to be free from the stress, tension and pressure due to the hectic lifestyle.

As he firmly believed, beautiful scenery has more than restorative powers. Pastoral nature has a moral and spiritual influence on human behavior and it promotes a healthy community life that is harmonized with leisure, contemplativeness, resilience and happy tranquility.

Since my Spiritual Exercises in June this year, I jog for about an hour early every morning, facing toward the east to feel the sunrise. I think the sunrise is one of the best gifts from nature. Jogging, slowly breathing in and out, and facing the heavens give me refreshing perspectives on life.

I really appreciate all those who make the globe green, peaceful and beautiful.

‘에메랄드 네크리스’

강렬한 햇살과 높은 습도로 뒤섞인 뜨거운 열기는 우리 일상에 영향을 미친다. 대구에 사는 내 조카는 날씨가 마치 뜨거운 프라이팬 속에 있는 것 같다고 말한다. 이러한 열파가 세계로 퍼져 나가고 있다.

이처럼 무더운 여름 한복판에 숲 속의 나무 그늘 아래 걸어가는 것은 선선하게 지낼 수 있는 한 가지 방법이다. 나무가 주는 상큼한 느낌 덕분에 자연을 보존하고 녹지 공간을 조성하는 것은 지구를 살기 좋은 곳으로 만들기 위해 수행해야 하는 어려운 과제가 되었다.

광활한 들판과 땅이 한때는 나무와 식물, 꽃과 시내, 호수와 연못, 바위로 가득 차 끊임없이 펼쳐진 정글을 이루었으리라 상상한다.

그런데 끊임없는 문명의 영향으로 많은 녹지대가 다른 목적으로 개발되고 경작되었다. 곳곳에서 일어난 많은 개발에도 선의로 가득 차 깨어 있는 사람들 덕분에 녹지 공간이 유지되고 있음을 보는 것은 참 흐뭇한 일이다.

영적 비전을 지닌 사람들, 특히 생태학자와 환경애호가들은 자연이 더는 훼손되지 않도록 한결같이 노력해 왔다. 선의를 갖고 영감을 주는 환경운동가들의 비전 덕분에 우리는 여전히 우리 주변을 둘러싼 경이로운 자연이 주는 아름다움을 맛보며 즐길 수 있다.

어느 날, 보스턴 근처 브루클라인을 산책하던 가운데 프레드릭 로 옴스테드 국립 유적지인 페이스테드를 우연히 보았다!

유인물에 소개된 프레드릭 로 옴스테드(1822-1903) 이야기를 호기심을 갖고 유심히 훑어본 나는 그가 유망한 비전과 영감을 주는 선의를 지닌 훌륭한 환경운동가임을 알았다.

옴스테드는 미국 최초의 조경 건축가로, 그가 디자인한 유명한 건축물에는 뉴욕 센트럴 파크, 노스캐롤라이나 애슈빌에 있는 빌트모어 대저택, 시카고 만국박람회장, 캐피톨 그라운드, 뉴욕 브루클린에 있는 프로스펙트 공원, 일리노이의 리버사이드, 캘리포니아의 스탠포드 대학교가 있다.

옴스테드는 공원을 설계한 미국 최고의 디자이너로서 1883년 매사추세츠주 브루클라인에 있는 농장으로 이주하여 에메랄드 네크리스라 일컫는 5마일(8킬로미터) 길이의 산책로를 만들었다. 이 산책로는 프랭클린 공원, 아놀드 수목원, 자메이카 연못, 옴스테드 공원, 머디 리버에서 야생지 백 베이 펜스로 이어진다.

에메랄드 네크리스는 교외에 자리한 목가적이고 그림 같은 시골 풍경을 도시 한복판에 연결하는 웅장한 공원 산책로다. 옴스테드는 자연 속에 목걸이를 만들어 사람들에게 "나지막한 숲이 우거진 경사지 사이로 정감 있게 구불구불 이어지는 아름다운 골짜기, 멀리서 보면 끊일 듯 이어지는 드넓은 잔디밭이 펼쳐져 있는” 느낌을 주는 산책로에 대한 비전을 가지고 있었다. 그는 모든 이가 이 공간을 통해 산업화된 도시 사회에서 벗어날 수 있기를 꿈꾸었다.

"위대한 도시는 위대한 교외 없이는 지속될 수 없다"고 그는 믿었으며, 우리의 몸과 정신은 자연과 하나되는 친밀한 관계를 통해 치유될 수 있다고 생각했다. 참으로 우리는 분주한 생활 방식에서 비롯되는 스트레스와 긴장, 압박감에서 벗어날 수 있는 한적한 장소가 필요하다.

옴스테드가 굳게 믿었듯이 아름다운 풍경은 회복력 이상의 힘을 지닌다. 목가적인 자연은 인간 행동에 도덕적, 영적 영향을 미치며, 여유와 명상, 회복력, 행복한 평온함과 조화를 이루는 건강한 공동체 삶을 불러일으킨다.

지난 6월 대피정을 한 이래 나는 날마다 아침 일찍 일어나 한 시간 정도 조깅을 하면서 해가 떠오르는 장면을 만끽하기 위해 동쪽을 향해 달린다. 일출은 자연이 주는 최고의 선물 가운데 하나라고 생각한다. 천천히 숨을 들이마시고 내쉬며 달리는 가운데 하늘을 바라보면 삶에 대해 새로운 관점을 지닐 수 있다.

지구를 푸르고 평화로우며 아름답게 만드는 모든 이에게 진심으로 감사드린다.

On the highway to heaven 하늘로 가는 고속도로

“The church needs healing. The world needs Jesus.”

Catholics in the United States have been inflamed with their sincere longing for the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist through the 10th National Eucharistic Congress held from July 17 to 21 in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN. It is said that around 60,000 people participated in this event.

For this spiritual gathering, they prepared themselves ahead with the help of the Eucharistic Pilgrimage over 6,500 miles through cities, along highways, and passing rural towns across the U.S. from May 17 to July 16.

With the same intentions of the Eucharistic Revival Movement, Pauline Sisters have also joined in this event through vocation meetings, talks and book signings and book exhibits.

Interestingly, the Eucharistic Miracles Exhibit compiled by Blessed Carlo Acutis (known as a “Saint in sneakers,” “the first Millennial saint” and “a global influencer for God”) was also displayed. As he said, the Eucharist is surely “the highway to heaven.”

As the key point of every Christian life, Jesus' presence in the Eucharist calls us to renew our lives so that we can live the present moment to the fullest with compassion and communion.

One of the contemporary examples of living with enthusiasm and love in the digital age would be Blessed Carlo Acutis who witnessed the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist in his short span of life. He was born to Italian parents in London, England, on May 3, 1991, and passed away from aggressively advancing leukemia at age 15 on Oct. 12, 2006, in Monza, Italy.

After making his first Communion at age 7, he went to Mass every day and practiced the Eucharistic adoration without fail. After Communion, he used to say: “Jesus, make yourself at home. Live within me as if it were your own dwelling!” The Word of God and the Eucharist were the center of his life.

Gifted in computer science, he gave all his energy and talent to the Church by creating websites, cartoons and virtual exhibitions. He also enjoyed mingling with his friends while playing soccer and video games. He was eager to teach himself to play the saxophone.

He is well-known for his devotion to Eucharistic miracles and Marian apparitions, which he uploaded on his website as a web designer.

Above all, he welcomed the poorest and helped the homeless, the needy and immigrants with the money he saved from his weekly allowance. He firmly believed that a successful life depends on the ability to love God above all and to love one’s neighbor as oneself. “Not me, but God” was his motto.

All these inspiring moments of his authentic life will be led to his Canonization to be held in the 2025 Jubilee with the theme of “Pilgrims of Hope.”

More than ever, we need hope.

하늘로 가는 고속도로 On the highway to heaven

“교회에는 치유가 필요하고 세상에는 예수님이 필요합니다.”

미국 가톨릭 신자들은 7월 17일부터 21일까지 인디애나주 인디애나폴리스에 있는 루카스 오일 경기장에서 열린 제10차 전국 성체대회를 통해 성체 안에 계신 예수님을 기리며 찬양하는 열정으로 불타올랐는데, 60,000여 명이 이 행사에 참석했다고 한다.

이 영적 모임을 위해 신자들은 5월 17일부터 7월 16일까지 미국 곳곳에 있는 도시와 고속도로, 시골 마을을 가로질러 6,500마일이 넘는 길을 순례하는 가운데 성체를 현양하며 준비해 왔다.

전국적으로 성체 신심을 고무하는 것과 같은 지향으로 바오로딸 수녀들 또한 성소 모임, 강연, 저자 사인회, 도서 전시를 하며 동참했다.

“운동화를 신은 성인", "첫 밀레니얼 세대 성인", "인터넷에서 높은 인지도를 얻은 하느님의 인플루언서"로 알려진 복자 카를로 아쿠티스가 자료를 모아 만든 성체의 기적 사진도 대회 가운데 흥미롭게 전시되었다. 그가 말했듯이 성체는 분명 "하늘(천국)로 가는 고속도로"다.

모든 그리스도인 삶의 핵심인 성체 안에 계신 예수님의 현존은 우리가 연민을 지니고 친교를 나누는 가운데 순간순간을 충만하게 살아감으로써 우리 삶을 새롭게 하라고 일깨운다.

성체 안에 참으로 살아 계신 예수님의 현존을 증거한 복자 카를로 아쿠티스는 비록 짧은 생애를 살다 갔지만 디지털 시대에 열정을 다해 사랑으로 살아간 우리 시대 사람들 가운데 하나다. 그는 1991년 5월 3일 영국 런던에서 이탈리아인 부모 사이에 태어났고, 2006년 10월 12일 이탈리아 몬차에서 15세의 나이에 급성 백혈병으로 세상을 떠났다.

일곱 살 때 첫 영성체를 한 다음 그는 날마다 미사에 참례했고 하루도 빠짐없이 성체조배를 했다. 성체를 모신 다음에는 "예수님, 제 안에서 편안하게 지내세요. 제 마음이 마치 당신 집인 것처럼 제 안에 사세요!" 하고 말하곤 했다. 하느님 말씀과 성체는 참으로 그의 삶의 중심이었다.

컴퓨터 과학에 재능을 보인 그는 모든 힘과 능력을 기울여 웹사이트와 만화, 가상 전시회를 만들어 교회에 봉헌했다. 그는 또한 친구들과 어울려 축구와 비디오 게임 하는 것을 좋아했으며 색소폰을 독학하여 연주했다.

그는 성체의 기적과 성모 발현 신심이 깊은 웹사이트 디자이너로서 자신이 설계한 웹사이트에 관련 자료를 올렸다.

무엇보다 그는 가장 가난한 이들을 환대했고, 자신이 매주 받는 용돈으로 노숙자과 궁핍한 이들과 이주민들에게 도움을 주었다. 성공하는 삶은 무엇보다 하느님을 사랑하고 이웃을 자신처럼 사랑하는 역량에 달려 있다고 굳게 믿은 그의 삶의 모토는 "내가 아니라 하느님"이었다.

이처럼 진솔한 삶으로 영감을 주는 그의 모든 순간은 "희망의 순례자들"이라는 주제로 거행되는 2025년 희년에 성인품에 오르는 것으로 이어진다.

그 어느 때보다 지금 이 순간 우리에게는 희망이 필요하다.

"우리는 우리에게 주어진 희망의 불꽃을 일으키며, 열린 정신과 신뢰하는 마음, 원대한 비전으로 앞을 내다보면서 모든 이가 새로운 힘과 확신을 갖도록 도와야 합니다... 우리가 보편적 형제애의 감각을 회복하고 만연한 빈곤이 자아내는 비극에 눈을 감지 않는다면 우리는 참으로 희망의 불꽃을 불러일으킬 것입니다..."(프란치스코 교황)

In memory of Ann 앤을 기리며…

Together with religious sisters from the local community, I went to the Wake and the funeral Mass offered in loving memory of Elizabeth Ann Kammien who passed away on June 29.

I remember her with smiles. From time to time, Ann came to our bookshop with her brother Dan Compton, one of our cooperators. Dan had to help her walk because she couldn’t get around by herself. Once very active as a physical therapist, she suffered from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease or Motor Neuron Disease) for the past three years.

Paying a visit to the Wake, I could feel the warm-hearted atmosphere of her family. Lots of photos were displayed, and the screen was constantly played in memory of her life. Her wedding album and an article about her generous hospitality toward exchange students were also displayed. All these parts of her life bear witness to my belief that our very existence is to be celebrated.

The urn for her cremated ashes revealed that she enjoyed listening to the birds singing in the trees.

“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” (Maya Angelou, 1928-2014). This quotation written on her little holy card invited me to reflect on her life in kindness and gentleness.

How beautiful and touching it is for her bereaved family to appreciate the faithful and friendly accompaniment of their acquaintances! The family expressed: “We are forever grateful to those who sent loving cards, texts and flowers, took Ann on walks and coffee dates, took Ann to doctors’ appointments, provided delicious food and wine, stretched and cared for Ann, helped Ann in the garden, danced in the kitchen to 'Georgie Girl,' listened to Billy Joel and Neil Diamond on repeat, worked on puzzles with Ann, organized Ann’s clothes and items, made Ann laugh during this hard journey with ALS.”

As Ann’s family realized the true meaning of peace through their enduring and challenging accompaniment, peace does not mean being in a place where there is no noise, trouble, suffering or hard work. Peace means “to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in our heart”.

Death reminds us of living our present life with a joyful appreciation. We don’t know what will happen in the next moment; we just live every single moment to the fullest.

The Cemetries are very visible in our daily life. They are either along the street or on little hills. Familiar burial sites tell us that death is not a matter of keeping some distance from us but a reality that will come true for every one of us someday. Death is a necessary part of our life inviting us to reflect on living a transitory life on earth.

At the 16 key historic sites along the 2.5 miles-long Freedom Trail in Boston, we can also see the peaceful presence of three burial grounds: Copp’s Hill Burying Ground established in 1659, the Granary Burying Ground founded in 1660 and King’s Chapel Burying Ground founded in 1630.

The goodwill of all souls is still present in the universe. They intercede for us, and we pray for their eternal rest. In this way, we live each moment in a faithful spirit of “communion” (spiritual union) all over the world. How consoling and blissful it is!

In memory of Ann 앤을 기리며…

분원 공동체 수녀님들과 함께 지난 6월 29일 세상을 떠난 엘리자베스 앤 카미엔을 기억하며 바치는 연도와 장례 미사에 다녀왔다.

활짝 웃는 앤의 모습이 떠오른다. 앤은 바오로딸 협력자인 동생 댄 콤프턴과 함께 이따금 서원에 들렸다. 댄은 홀로 다니지 못하는 앤을 부축하며 도와주곤 했다. 한때 물리치료사로서 활발하게 움직였던 앤은 지난 3년 동안 근위축성 측색경화증(ALS: 루게릭병 또는 운동신경질환)을 앓았다.

연도에 다녀오면서 가족의 따뜻한 마음을 느낄 수 있었다. 많은 사진이 전시되어 있었고, 벽걸이 화면에는 앤의 삶을 기리는 영상이 계속 나왔다. 웨딩 앨범과 교환학생들을 환대하며 관대하게 방을 내어 준 기사도 엿보였다. 앤이 살았던 삶의 모든 부분은 우리의 온 존재가 기쁨과 축하하는 마음으로 가득 차 있다는 믿음을 드러낸다.

앤의 유골함은 앤이 나무에서 지저귀는 새 소리를 즐겨 들었음을 보여주었다.

“사람들은 당신이 한 말이나 행동은 잊어버리겠지만 당신이 그들에게 느끼게 한 것은 결코 잊지 않을 것입니다.”(마야 안젤루, 1928-2014). 작은 추모 상본에 적힌 이 글은 친절하고 온화했던 앤의 삶을 되돌아보게 한다.

성실하고 다정하게 함께했던 지인들의 동반에 감사하는 유족들의 모습은 참으로 아름답고 감동적이다! “앤이 회복되도록 도움을 준 모든 분을 영원히 잊지 않고 감사드리겠습니다. 사랑 어린 카드와 문자, 꽃을 보낸 이들, 앤과 함께 산책하고 커피를 마시며 시간을 보낸 이들, 병원 진료에 맞추어 앤을 데려간 이들, 맛있는 음식과 와인을 나누어 준 이들, 앤이 스트레칭 하도록 보살펴준 이들, 정원에서 앤과 함께한 이들, 주방에서 ‘조지 걸’ 리듬에 맞추어 춤을 춘 이들, 빌리 조엘과 닐 다이아몬드의 노래를 거듭 들어준 이들, 앤과 함께 퍼즐을 풀어준 이들, 앤의 옷가지와 물건들을 정리해 준 이들, 루게릭병과 함께하는 힘든 여정 동안 앤을 웃게 한 이들에게 감사드립니다.”

앤의 가족이 투병으로 인한 도전을 인내롭게 동반하면서 평화의 참 의미를 깨달았듯이 평화는 소란스러움이나 어려움, 고통이나 힘겨움이 없는 곳에 깃드는 것을 뜻하지 않는다. 평화란 “숱한 어려움 속에서도 한결같이 평온하게 머무는 것”을 뜻한다.

죽음은 지금 이 순간의 삶을 기쁘고 감사롭게 살아야 함을 떠올린다. 우리는 앞으로 어떤 일이 생길지 모른다. 우리는 다만 순간순간 최선을 다해 살아갈 뿐이다.

일상 가운데 우리는 손쉽게 묘지를 바라볼 수 있다. 길거리를 따라 놓인 묘지나 작은 언덕에 자리한 묘지가 보인다. 이처럼 친근하게 다가오는 묘지는 죽음이란 우리 삶에서 동떨어진 것이 아니라 언젠가는 우리 모두에게 다가올 현실임을 말해준다. 죽음은 우리 삶에서 없어서는 안 될 필연적인 부분으로, 우리는 다만 이 땅에서 잠시 살다 가리라는 것을 묵상하게 한다.

2.5마일(4킬로미터)에 이르는 보스턴 자유의 길을 따라 있는 16개의 주요 유적지 가운데 세 개의 공동묘지(1659년에 마련된 콥스 힐 묘지, 1660년에 마련된 그래너리 묘지, 1630년에 마련된 킹스 채플 묘지)가 보인다.

모든 영혼이 지닌 선의는 여전히 온 우주에 깃들어 있다. 영혼들은 우리를 위해 전구를 청하며, 우리는 영혼들의 영원한 안식을 위해 기도한다. 이처럼 우리는 세계 곳곳에 깃든 “통공”(영적 일치)의 정신으로 순간순간 살아간다. 이 얼마나 큰 위로가 되며 행복한 일인가!

One week in Scituate 시츄에잇에서 보낸 일주일

Whenever I have a vacation, I prefer climbing mountains and walking by the seashore together with my sisters. Being closer to mountains and the sea is always inspiring, healing, refreshing and relaxing. Living abroad, this year was no exception thanks to sisters with goodwill and generosity.

Appreciating hard-working sisters, Reverend Monsignor Frederick R. Condon (1920-97) donated the Condon family summer house in Scituate to the Daughters of St. Paul in the United States in 1983. Monsignor Condon wanted this house to be “a place of peace and joyful rest” for the religious sisters.

For a week in June after making my annual retreat (spiritual exercises), I stayed at that house in Scituate, a small coastal town with a harbor situated halfway between Boston and Plymouth, MA.

“Scituate” is derived from the Indian word “Satuit” which means cold brook or small stream flowing into the harbor. The early settlers who arrived at this harbor in the 1630s spelled it as Sityate, Cituate or Seteat in the beginning. Then, it was pronounced as “sit-chew-it” in the 1640s.

Thanks to the early pilgrims who settled in this coastal area, I enjoyed walking by the seashore in Minot Beach, North Scituate Beach, Egypt Beach, Sand Hills Beach, Museum Beach, Peggotty Beach and Humarock Beach.

Thanks to the salty seawater, all the scratches and pains that I had while gardening during the retreat were healed.

Every morning, I got up very early to see the sunrise, but I couldn’t see a clear sunrise because of the thick clouds. What a joy it was to see the clearest sunrise on the last day of my vacation.

Each day, I walked on and on along the seashore and the trails in the park for about six hours. Walking by the seashore on bare feet let me be united with the sand, wet earth, the waves and the rocks.

As I took a walk here and there with much freedom and appreciation, I felt that I truly came from the Earth. I feel most comfortable, peaceful and blissful when I am in nature. As I walk simply and lightly without thinking, I can remain in the present moment.

Constantly moving back and forth, the waves follow the tunes of the wind and dance with humming rocks, shining pebbles and sands in the seashores. “Who stirs up the sea” so that its waves dance to and from constantly? He is “the Lord of hosts” (Jeremiah 31:35).

“Let the earth bless the Lord… Mountains and hills, bless the Lord… Everything growing on earth, bless the Lord… You Springs, bless the Lord… Seas and rivers, bless the Lord… You sea monsters and all water creatures, bless the Lord…” (Daniel 3:74-79).

One thing very interesting about the seashore spread throughout the coastal Scituate is that it is surrounded by private houses except the entrance to the beach. Walking along the seashore, I couldn’t find any stores nearby.

Just living by the sea and contemplating the constant waves and the peaceful horizon, our neighbors become simple, gentle and mild. Those who appreciate and enjoy the marvelous beauty of the sea become warm-hearted, friendly, kind and calm. They are neither in a hurry nor assertive. They flow freely and spontaneously following the high and low tides of life.

시츄에잇에서 보낸 일주일 One week in Scituate

휴가 때 나는 언니들과 함께 산에 오르거나 바닷가를 거니는 것을 좋아한다. 산과 바다를 가까이하는 것은 언제나 영감을 주고 치유하며 자신을 새롭게 하여 편안하게 한다. 해외에 있어도 수녀님들의 선의와 관대함 덕분에 올해 또한 숲과 바다를 가까이하며 보냈다.

참으로 열심히 뛰는 수녀들을 알아보신 프레더릭 R. 컨돈 몬시뇰(1920-97)은 1983년 미국 시츄에잇에 있는 컨돈 가족 여름 별장을 바오로딸에게 내어 주셨다. 컨돈 몬시뇰은 이 집이 수녀들에게 “평화와 기쁨을 주는 휴식처”가 되기를 바라셨다.

덕분에 6월에 대피정을 마친 나는 일주일 동안 매사추세츠주 보스턴과 플리머스 중간 지점에 자리한 시츄에잇이라는 작은 해안 마을에 있는 그 집에 머물렀다.

"시츄에잇Scituate"이라는 말은 시냇물 또는 항구로 흐르는 작은 개울을 뜻하는 인디언들의 말인 "Satuit"에서 파생되었다. 1630년대에 이 항구에 도착한 초기 정착민들은 이곳을 Sityate, Cituate 또는 Seteat라고 표기했는데, 1640년대에 이르러 “sit-chew-it”이라고 불렀다.

이 해안가에 자리 잡은 초기 순례자들 덕분에 나는 미놋 비치, 노스 시츄에잇 비치, 이집트 비치, 샌드 힐스 비치, 뮤지엄 비치, 페고티 비치, 휴마록 비치를 돌아다니며 맘껏 걸었다.

짜디짠 바닷물 덕분에 대피정 동안 틈틈이 정원을 가꾸며 생긴 상처와 가려움증이 모두 아물었다.

나는 날마다 아침 일찍 일어나 일출을 보러 나갔는데, 짙게 드리운 구름 때문에 화창한 해돋이를 볼 수 없었다. 그런데 휴가 마지막 날, 해맑은 일출을 볼 수 있어 무척 기뻤다.

날마다 6시간 정도 바닷가와 공원 산책로를 따라 걷고 또 걸었다. 맨발로 해변을 걷다 보면 모래와 축축한 땅, 파도와 돌멩이와 하나가 된다.

마냥 자유롭고 감사로운 마음으로 이곳 저곳을 걷다 보면 나 자신이 참으로 흙에서 왔음을 실감한다. 나는 자연 속에 파묻혀 있을 때 가장 편안하고 평화로우며 행복하다. 아무런 생각 없이 소박하고 가벼운 마음으로 거닐다 보면 오로지 지금 이 순간에 머물 수 있다.

끊임없이 출렁이며 움직이는 파도는 바람의 선율을 따라 바닷가에 앉아 흥얼거리는 바위들, 햇살에 반짝이는 돌멩이, 모래알과 함께 춤을 춘다. “파도 소리 요란하게 바다를 뒤흔드는” 이는 누구인가? 그는 “만군의 주님” (예레미야 31,35)이시다.

“땅아, 주님을 찬미하여라… 산과 언덕들아, 주님을 찬미하여라… 땅에서 싹트는 것들아, 모두 주님을 찬미하여라… 샘물아, 주님을 찬미하여라… 바다와 강들아, 주님을 찬미하여라… 용들과 물에서 움직이는 모든 것들아, 주님을 찬미하여라…”(다니엘 3,74-79).

바닷가에 펼쳐진 마을 시츄에잇의 흥미로운 모습 가운데 하나는 비치로 들어가는 입구 외에는 거의 개인 주택으로 둘러싸여 있다는 것이다. 바닷가를 따라 거닐다 보면 해변 가까이에 있는 가게는 찾아볼 수 없다.

바다 가까이 살면서 끊임없이 출렁이는 파도와 평화로운 지평선을 바라보는 이들은 단순하고 온유하며 온화하다. 경이로운 바다의 아름다움을 관조하며 즐기는 이들은 마음이 따뜻하고 다정하며 친절하고 차분하다. 그들은 서두르거나 단호하게 말하지 않는다. 그들은 삶의 밀물과 썰물을 따라 자유롭게, 자연스럽게 흘러간다.

Sam Vitale’s grotto for the Virgin Mary 샘 비탈레의 성모 동굴

Whenever I went to church with my devout mother, her first act of faith was to put her hands together to pray in front of Blessed Mary standing in the church's front yard. Our Blessed Mary is so close to people who faithfully believe in Jesus.

Almost every Catholic church or sanctuary has a grotto for the Blessed Virgin Mary who, in various forms and grottos, is honored by thousands of people who ask her for intercessions to Jesus.

So, lots of pilgrims keep coming to Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, Our Lady of Lourdes in France, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico and so on. Inherited with the historical tradition of the apparition of Mary in various places, miniature forms of particular grottos are well represented in Catholic churches and pilgrimage destinations worldwide.

The little grottos for Mary created by faithful families are also well maintained. On May 26, our community was invited to join a May Crowning Celebration for Mary with one of our neighborhood families. Sam Vitale has arranged and prepared for the event for 33 years.

As an ordinary parishioner and a faithful devotee of Blessed Mary, Vitale invites his acquaintances to this event in May every year. This year, over 300 people gathered to participate in a special celebration in the backyard of his house. One big tent was able to cover everybody. I have never seen such a giant tent.

It was so touching and beautiful to see children from various families walking in two lines to offer the flowers in front of the grotto! One of his little granddaughters offered the crown made of roses for Blessed Mary and prayed for some moments.

Especially in a culture where single, nuclear or divorced families are increasing more and more, it is encouraging to see children playing and praying together with their parents. With the help of gathering together to pray in front of Mary’s grotto, faithful devotion to Mary will be naturally inherited by children.

A violinist and an accordion player also performed the hymns during the celebration. They even played the melodies of old popular songs during a meal.

On the day of celebration, it still rained in the morning but stopped from noon. When we returned to our community late afternoon, it began to rain again. How interesting and amazing it is to see the flexibility of changeable weather. God truly listens to our earnest prayers that go up to the sky like incense.

Despite enduring and struggling due to his health issue, Sam visits our little chapel in the bookshop to pray from time to time. As a friend to our community, he shares many things with us.

Many years ago, he created a Blessed Mother Grotto at his alma mater, Christian Brothers College High School, in appreciation for his teachers. He also made a meaningful grotto in our community's backyard in Saint Louis. Now, we pray the rosary together with voluntary visitors at 5:30 pm from Monday to Friday, especially in May and October every year.

“Let my prayer be incense before you; my uplifted hands an evening offering. Set a guard, Lord, before my mouth, keep watch over the door of my lips," (Psalms 141:2-3).

샘 비탈레의 성모 동굴 Sam Vitale’s grotto for the Virgin Mary

신심 깊은 어머니와 함께 성당에 갈 때마다 어머님이 가장 먼저 하신 신앙 행위는 성당 앞뜰에 서 계신 성모님 앞에 두 손 모아 기도하는 것이었다. 이처럼 복되신 성모님은 예수님을 충실히 믿는 이들 가까이 함께 계신다.

모든 성당이나 성지에는 성모 동굴이 있다. 여러 모습으로 동굴 안에 계신 성모님은 예수님께 전구를 청하는 수많은 사람한테서 공경 받는다.

그리하여 수많은 순례자들이 포르투갈의 파티마 성모님, 프랑스의 루르드 성모님, 멕시코의 과달루페 성모님을 끊임없이 찾아 나선다. 여러 장소에 발현하신 성모님의 역사적 전통을 이어받아 특별히 만들어진 축소판 성모 동굴은 세계 곳곳에 자리한 가톨릭 교회와 순례 성지에 잘 드러나 있다.

신심 깊은 가정이 만든 소담한 성모 동굴도 잘 보존되고 있다. 5월 26일, 우리 공동체는 이웃처럼 가깝게 지내는 가정과 함께하는 성모 마리아 화관식에 초대받았다. 샘 비탈레는 33년 동안 이 행사를 기획하여 준비해 왔다.

평범한 신자로서 성모님을 충실히 사랑하며 따르는 샘 비탈레는 해마다 5월이 되면 이 행사를 주관하여 지인들을 초대한다. 올해는 300명이 넘는 사람들이 그의 집 뒷마당에서 열린 특별한 화관식에 참여하기 위해 모였다. 모든 이가 커다란 텐트 아래 모였는데, 이처럼 큰 텐트는 처음 보았다.

여러 가정에서 함께 온 아이들이 성모 동굴 앞에 꽃을 봉헌하기 위해 두 줄로 걸어가는 모습을 바라보는 것은 참 감동적이고 아름다웠다! 샘의 손녀딸 가운데 한 아이가 성모님께 장미 화관을 씌워드린 다음 잠시 기도했다.

미혼가족, 핵가족, 이혼가족이 늘어나는 문화 속에서 아이들이 부모님과 함께 지내며 기도하는 모습은 참으로 고무적이다. 성모 동굴 앞에 함께 모여 기도함으로써 성모님께 대한 깊은 신심은 자연스럽게 아이들에게 이어질 것이다.

바이올린 연주자와 아코디언 연주자가 화관식 내내 성가를 연주했으며 음식을 나누는 중에도 흘러간 팝송을 정겹게 들려주었다.

화관식이 진행되던 날 아침에 여전히 비가 내렸는데 정오가 되자 반갑게도 날이 개었다. 늦은 오후 무렵 우리가 공동체에 돌아왔을 때 비가 다시 내리기 시작했다. 변화무쌍한 날씨의 유연성을 보는 것은 참 흥미롭고 경이롭기만 하다. 분향처럼 하늘로 올라가는 간절한 기도를 하느님은 귀 기울여 들으신다.

샘은 건강 문제로 무던히 인내하며 고군분투함에도 이따금 바오로딸 서원에 있는 소성당에 찾아와 기도하며 우리 공동체의 벗으로서 많은 것을 나눈다.

몇 년 전 샘은 자신의 스승들께 감사드리는 뜻으로 모교인 크리스찬 브라더스 칼리지 고등학교에 성모 동굴을 마련해 주었다. 그는 또한 세인트루이스에 있는 우리 공동체 뒷마당에도 뜻깊은 성모 동굴을 만들어 주었다. 그 덕분에 우리는 매년 5월과 10월 월요일부터 금요일까지 오후 5시 30분에 자발적으로 찾아오는 이들과 함께 묵주기도를 바친다.

“저의 기도 당신 면전의 분향으로 여기시고 저의 손 들어 올리니 저녁 제물로 여겨 주소서. 주님, 제 입에 파수꾼을 세우시고 제 입술의 문을 지켜 주소서”(시편 141,2-3).
