Sam Vitale’s grotto for the Virgin Mary
Whenever I went to church with my devout mother, her first act of faith was to put her hands together to pray in front of Blessed Mary standing in the church's front yard. Our Blessed Mary is so close to people who faithfully believe in Jesus.
Almost every Catholic church or sanctuary has a grotto for the Blessed Virgin Mary who, in various forms and grottos, is honored by thousands of people who ask her for intercessions to Jesus.
So, lots of pilgrims keep coming to Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, Our Lady of Lourdes in France, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico and so on. Inherited with the historical tradition of the apparition of Mary in various places, miniature forms of particular grottos are well represented in Catholic churches and pilgrimage destinations worldwide.
The little grottos for Mary created by faithful families are also well maintained. On May 26, our community was invited to join a May Crowning Celebration for Mary with one of our neighborhood families. Sam Vitale has arranged and prepared for the event for 33 years.
As an ordinary parishioner and a faithful devotee of Blessed Mary, Vitale invites his acquaintances to this event in May every year. This year, over 300 people gathered to participate in a special celebration in the backyard of his house. One big tent was able to cover everybody. I have never seen such a giant tent.
It was so touching and beautiful to see children from various families walking in two lines to offer the flowers in front of the grotto! One of his little granddaughters offered the crown made of roses for Blessed Mary and prayed for some moments.
Especially in a culture where single, nuclear or divorced families are increasing more and more, it is encouraging to see children playing and praying together with their parents. With the help of gathering together to pray in front of Mary’s grotto, faithful devotion to Mary will be naturally inherited by children.
A violinist and an accordion player also performed the hymns during the celebration. They even played the melodies of old popular songs during a meal.
On the day of celebration, it still rained in the morning but stopped from noon. When we returned to our community late afternoon, it began to rain again. How interesting and amazing it is to see the flexibility of changeable weather. God truly listens to our earnest prayers that go up to the sky like incense.
Despite enduring and struggling due to his health issue, Sam visits our little chapel in the bookshop to pray from time to time. As a friend to our community, he shares many things with us.
Many years ago, he created a Blessed Mother Grotto at his alma mater, Christian Brothers College High School, in appreciation for his teachers. He also made a meaningful grotto in our community's backyard in Saint Louis. Now, we pray the rosary together with voluntary visitors at 5:30 pm from Monday to Friday, especially in May and October every year.
“Let my prayer be incense before you; my uplifted hands an evening offering. Set a guard, Lord, before my mouth, keep watch over the door of my lips," (Psalms 141:2-3).

Sam Vitale’s grotto for the Virgin Mary

Beauty of Space
“Jesus in Space: A True Story That’s Out of This World” written by Cecilia Cicone shares with us a touching experience of Tom Jones, an American astronaut who took Holy Communion (the Eucharist) when he traveled to outer space in the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1994. Space is such a marvelous and huge place that we keep dreaming of going beyond the Earth.
All the planets, including the Sun, and the moon are constantly moving while maintaining their appropriate space and distance among themselves.
What would happen if there is no space among all the existences in the universe?
If one of them loses its interspace concept, all of them will collide and be destroyed all of a sudden. Each planet is never tightly arranged; each of them co-exists with a sense of space and distance. So do we!
One day, I tried to light two candles on the altar in our chapel, but I couldn’t make them ignite immediately because I put the lighter too close to the wick. After several attempts, I realized the necessity of keeping a space between the wick and the lighter. Then, I could succeed in lighting the candles with the help of that space.
Whether small or big, cosmic or global, space is so important in our lives. Especially in our human relationships, having some space, giving room, and keeping a wise distance help us to understand, accept, love and appreciate others as they are.
When relationships are difficult, being apart for some time provides room for improvement. Surely, some space helps us to be free, peaceful, objective, reasonable and relaxed. Emotional and spiritual space also brings about healing, resilience and peace of mind.
Even in my room where I have some living necessities such as a bed, a chair, a desk, a lamp table, a bookshelf and a built-in wardrobe, I still need some space to be and move around.
At bookshops as well, when there is a wider entrance, people who enter feel more room to browse with inner freedom and peace.
The trees on the mountains also need some space to grow. When they are too close together and over-crowded, they can’t give enough room to one another and, as a result, they can’t grow to the fullest. So, the gardener regularly weeds out, prunes and thins them out appropriately.
Thus, the beauty of space is created. A physical sense of space is also related to a spiritual sense of moderation, temperance, emptiness and simplicity.
Many years ago, when I walked around the streets of Rome, I noticed many stores displaying a few products to create some space where we could appreciate their true values and merits.
Having some space in many ways lets me breathe in peace. Being over-crowded, being in a hurry, being overwhelmed due to overwork, being impatient, and, thus, living without peace of mind never allow us to appreciate the beauty of space. What a joyful gift it is to have some space along the way of our hectic lives!
“Do not let your hearts be troubled… I am the way and the truth and the life… Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” (John 14:1,6,27)

Word of the Cross
What would be the most appropriate word that can represent the cross of Jesus?
Humility, love, listening, surrender, emptiness and self-sacrifice. There are various expressions that can represent the symbolic meaning of the cross.
In my reflections, the best word for the cross is humility, which is the key to the spiritual life. Saint Augustine also regarded humility as the most important virtue in Christian life.
This year, as a part of the ongoing formation of sisters in our congregation, each of us is assigned to read "Redeeming Conflict: 12 Habits for Christian Leaders," written by Ann M. Garrido, and to share our thoughts in the community.
Reading three legendary stories given as "companions for the spiritual journey" at the beginning of the book, I found one common point: humility. One example is Francis' attitude of humble curiosity to listen and talk with the sultan Malik al-Kamil.
Encountering Francis dressed in his rags. Malik al-Kamil recognized him as a man of God and changed his attitude. Through their heartfelt dialogues, each of them changed their perspectives and adopted the goodness of the other.
"The Word of the Cross: the Character of Pauline preaching in 1 Corinthians 1:10-2:5" is the title of a master's thesis of our Junior Sister Amanda. Listening to her defending her thesis at Aquinas Institute of Theology in April, I deeply appreciated her thorough study and profound reflection on the words of the Cross, which she firmly believes to be the key to Pauline's preaching.
The words of the Cross go beyond any eloquent wisdom or lofty words when we proclaim the Good News. Sr. Amanda reflected on a distinctive application of rhetoric beyond the Greco-Roman rhetoric through the powerful words of the Cross of Christ.
Truly, Christ crucified is God's power and wisdom. "When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom … I resolved to know nothing … except Jesus Christ crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God's power." (1Corinthians 2:1-5)
Through Christ crucified, Paul inspired lots of people and touched and healed their hearts. Paul preached a person, not an idea. With Christ crucified, Paul invited people to have a deeper relationship with God.
The community or the parish is not a place of rhetoric filled with words but "a place of encounter with Christ" where faith is given, received, exercised, experienced, shared and thus witnessed. In this way, concrete acts of compassionate charity are realized.
Reading her thesis, I could feel how deeply she has integrated her learning and study into her community life. While studying at the Theology Institute, she has never neglected communitarian duties or her apostolate. As a vocational promoter, she never boasts about herself, and she is enthusiastic about organizing various activities, including talks with young people.
"The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)
Truly, the word of the Cross is living and effective, leading to discerning reflections and thoughts of the heart.

Fundraising dinner for Ukraine
Once retired from the front line, some people don’t want to be involved in social or communitarian activities anymore, but many still hope to be as active and lively as possible.
One good example is Rev. Johnson, 84. As a retired priest, he likes to join several activities such as book club and spiritual direction. He enjoys meeting people and talking with them.
Relying on a one-legged walker, he comes to Pauline Books & Media Center several times a week. Especially on Fridays and Saturdays, he is happy to join the morning prayer together with us and to celebrate Mass for us in our chapel.
Despite getting old, he is cheerful and lively, as if filled with the Holy Spirit. He smiles often and appreciates our smiles.
On Saturday, he has breakfast with us. One day in April, he invited us to join a fundraising dinner buffet of authentic Ukrainian food, dessert and drinks at St. Justin Martyr Parish Center.
St. Justin Martyr Parish and St. Catherine Laboure Parish co-hosted a fundraising dinner for Ukrainian refugees in St. Louis in the U.S. state of Missouri. In appreciation of our friendship, Rev. Johnson bought one round table for us to support Ukrainian immigrants.
According to the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, millions of people are displaced by the Ukrainian war. At present, more than 6 million refugees and asylum-seekers are spread across the European region.
What Ukrainians hope would be moments of healing, resilience and the freedom from post-totalitarian trauma and tension. Considering such a complicated political confrontation, “Ukraine Diary,” written by Henri J.M. Nouwen (1932-96) was published in 2023.
Nouwen wrote this diary while making two trips to Ukraine to lead retreats in 1993 with the invitation of Borys Gudziak, now Metropolitan Archbishop of Philadelphia, and in 1994 at the invitation of Zenia Kushpeta.
Encountering the circumstances of Ukraine at that time, which is still relevant these days, Nouwen wrote as follows:
“Not only were there many poor people in Ukraine, but Ukraine as a nation was poor, poorly situated in Europe, poorly treated by East and West, poorly held together by conflicting political interests. … God loves the poor. God even has a preferential love for the poor. Ukraine is poor, very poor, not just materially, but also emotionally and spiritually. To care for the poor means much more than reaching out to people who need food, jobs, clothes, and a safe place to stay. It means also to care for nations that are crushed by the forces of history and live under the burden of being ignored and rejected by the international community. Personally, I felt a deep desire to stay faithful to the Ukrainian people and to keep choosing not just for the individual poor, who need support, but also for the country that is so clearly marginalized in the family of nations.”
God’s Providence always flows downward and thus becomes incarnational. God comes down to us in our very place of weakness, poverty, nothingness, brokenness, failure, contradiction and desperation.
Nouwen concludes his Ukraine Diary with faithful hope: “Blessed are the poor. … The true blessing comes from the poor. After this trip to Ukraine, I know in a new way that the people we have met there challenge us to be faithful to our commitment to the poor and to trust that through that faithfulness we will find true joy and peace.”

Growing in virtue
How to live virtuously? It is one of my ongoing questions, inspiring me to examine my conscience every day.
Various kinds of spiritual and moral means are given to those who “seek what is above” (Colossians 3:1). Among them are four cardinal virtues, seven Christian virtues, four theological virtues, nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control) and seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord).
Whenever I went for the mission to the school, the expression “Virtue of the Month” written on the bulletin board caught my attention.
Even in “Huddle,” the weekly online newsletter of our congregation, the expression “Value of the Month” invites me to ponder on spiritual values. This year, the American Province of the Daughters of Saint Paul chose five core values: devoted, intentional, excellent, adaptable and trustworthy. So, each member is encouraged to live these values and to cite sisters or co-workers who witness the chosen value every month.
All these enduring efforts remind me of the importance of practicing virtues in daily life.
Benjamin Franklin once wrote a book about virtues. The 13 virtues he always kept in his mind were temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity and humility. To practice these values habitually, he tried to concentrate on one at a time.
Pauline Sr. Mary Lea Hill, known as a “Crabby Mystic,” shares her humorous wisdom in her books such as “Prayer and You: Wit and Wisdom from a Crabby Mystic,” “Blessed are the Stressed: Secrets to a Happy Heart from a Crabby Mystic,” “Complaints of the Saints: Stumbling upon Holiness with a Crabby Mystic” and “Growing in Virtue: One Vice at a Time.”
In her recent book titled “Growing in Virtue: One Vice at a Time with a Crabby Mystic,” Sr. Lea invites us to look at the four cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance) as the basis of a good human life. Then, she goes through the seven Christian virtues (diligence, patience, moderation, kindness, chastity, generosity and humility) in comparison with the seven vices (capital or deadly sins: sloth, anger, gluttony, envy, lust, avarice and pride). Finally, she suggests the three theological virtues (faith, hope and charity) that have the most profound supernatural strength and beauty.
In the beginning, God created us in goodness. However, due to the fall of Adam and Eve, we lost the common ground of goodness, and we have to face various vices and sins that bring about negative energies and consume what is good and life-giving.
So, we are struggling to overcome our human limitations and to strive to become a better person. Surely, by putting the spiritual virtues into practice, we can be like Jesus, but it is a life-long work.
I do hope to amend my limitations as well. So, I reflect on myself and make up my mind to improve more and more. Being conscious of living virtuously, I can be more attentive, compassionate and considerate of others.
One of my limitations is judging others inwardly by looking at their appearances. To correct this judgmental habit, I talk to myself whenever I fall into temptation: “I am weak. You are weak. All of us are weak!”

Free Sunday
From Monday to Sunday, the religious sisters follow the community schedules according to the rules of the religious orders. Along with the vows of poverty and chastity, obedience to the rules of the congregation is very important in religious life.
Our founder, Blessed James Alberione, said, “Poverty is the greatest wealth. Chastity is the greatest love. Obedience is the greatest freedom.” These definitions of the three vows seem paradoxical, but they have profound spiritual meanings for religious life.
Once entering the religious congregation, sisters or brothers are disciplined to observe the rules and put them into practice. Living in the community with other sisters, I feel that following the rules and the daily schedules makes time flow fast like an arrow.
In the early years of the religious orders, there was no concept of a free Sunday. As times develop and change, however, some of the religious orders have begun to value individual rights and responsible freedom.
Anyhow, it is good to have a free Sunday. When it is given once a month, we are free to choose what we want. Nevertheless, we don’t follow the extreme sense of freedom because we know what is best and necessary for ourselves.
In my case, I enjoy hiking on a free Sunday. When I am not able to climb a mountain, I take a long walk in the nearby park. Walking along the way, I pause a moment to take some pictures of flowers. I love to walk while appreciating the beauty of nature, which brings about joyful healing moments and resilience.
One day, while strolling around the neighborhood, I came across an older man pulling weeds in his front yard. I asked him if it was OK to take some pictures of tulips blooming in his garden.
He said, “Why not? Go ahead. You can also go to the backyard to take more pictures. Feel free to enjoy.”
I replied, “Thanks. I appreciate your kindness.”
“Not at all. I am now pulling weeds in the front yard. You know, the weeds come from somewhere else. I didn’t plant them. They were blown up to here by the wind. And I have to pull them out constantly. It is a hard work.”
Surely, gardening takes a lot of time and patience. Maintaining a garden and caring for various flowers takes much care, considerable effort and diligent hands.
Weeds grow so rapidly even though we don’t want them. As he said, they just come freely by the wind and enjoy themselves to the fullest until we pull them out.
Weeds are like defects such as rash judgments and stubborn hearts. No matter how I want to be compassionate, generous and understanding, my heart is prone to be judgmental and narrow-minded. So, I have to be conscious of examining myself and discerning my intentions with the help of the Holy Spirit.
After taking some pictures of tulips, I went to the backyard and saw another paradise where various flowers were blooming. There was a tiny bridge across a little creek between the gardens. He even decorated his gardens with cute dolls and miniatures.
It is a joy to see hidden efforts to cultivate the flowers and to care for the gardens constantly. “Let everything that has breath give praise to the Lord!”(Psalm 150:6)

Gospel of Life prayer breakfast
I had an opportunity to attend the 15th Annual Archbishop's Gospel of Life Prayer Breakfast held on Wednesday, in the ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton in St. Louis, Missouri.
Hosted by the St. Louis Chapter of Legatus, an international organization of dedicated lay people, including CEOs, presidents, managing partners and business owners who devote themselves to studying, living and spreading the Catholic faith in their business, professional and personal lives. They try to become better Catholics who can impact their businesses and lives.
To celebrate this annual meeting, Gospel of Life Prayer Breakfast sponsors invited several groups of high school students from Catholic schools as well as various religious sisters and brothers.
Interestingly, the breakfast prayer program took place from 6 a.m. until 9 a.m., with praying the Rosary on the theme of pro-life issues. To meet with this early schedule, I had to get up at 4:40 a.m.
Then, the Holy Mass was presided over by the Most Reverend Archbishop Mitchell T. Rozanski. Breakfast followed only after praying the Rosary and saying Mass. After sharing a beautiful meal with a cup of coffee, Sen. Mary Elizabeth Coleman, representing parts of Jefferson County in the Missouri Senate, gave her keynote address on pro-life issues while advocating for the culture of life, religious liberty and family values.
Childbirth, including birth control and abortion, is a very sensitive issue around the world. France became the first country to enshrine abortion rights in the constitution in March 2023. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said, "We are sending a message to all women: your body belongs to you." With the slogan of "my body my choice," France now protects abortion as a "guaranteed freedom."
In the United States, on the other hand, the abortion issue is one of the most divisive arguments. Among the country's states, 14 ban abortions in almost all circumstances, 17 have gestational limits on abortions, and 19 States allow abortions.
Abortions are being performed both in public and in secret in Korea, where the birthrate is the lowest in the world. It is a pity to see that the number of children is decreasing more and more at a noticeable rate nowadays. We can see the prayer corners for aborted babies either in churches or at pilgrimage sites.
Much prayer and attention are needed to protect human rights. Probably thanks to people's faithful prayers and conscious practices, more children are visible in the Catholic congregations in Missouri. It is so beautiful and encouraging to see children sitting near their parents during Mass. In terms of the presence of children and young people in the churches, I can see much hope in the United States.
The term Gospel of Life came from "Evangelium Vitae," an encyclical proclaimed in 1995 on the value and inviolability of human life by Pope John Paul II. The Gospel of life toward a fullness of life is given to each of us "as a good to be shared with all people."
The encyclical reads, "The Gospel of Life is for the whole of human society. To be actively pro-life is to contribute to the renewal of society through the promotion of the common good."
