Beauty of passing the ball 공을 패스하는 아름다움

After an annual 10-day spiritual exercise at the Queen of Apostles’ Retreat House in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, I joined a local vocation meeting in Seoul.

On the first day of the meeting, 14 of us who are involved in the vocation ministry in local communities shared our stories as well as the realities and situations of each area.

On the morning of the second day, we listened to a special lecture on the practical method of dialogue in the Holy Spirit. The theme of the lecture was how to live the spirit of synodality in our daily life. We pondered practical ways to change and transform our ways of thinking and life patterns.

In the afternoon, the preparation team presented youth program guides that can be used in local communities in each diocese. In between, we watched several video clips that helped us understand the characteristics of today’s youth, especially Generation Z.

After sharing new programs that each of us planned for the year 2026, we prayed together.

Living in a small local community, I just accepted the title of vocation manager for community programs. I know well enough that I am not a dynamic fit in that field. Sometimes our roles go beyond individual capability. Some of us are given many roles for the good of the community.

I was not active in the beginning. What I could do was pray for vocations. It was only after my pilgrimage last summer that my perspective began to change. I became more open-minded and flexible.

Meditation on the miracle story of five loaves and two fish helped me offer what I have, even if it is little or lacking. Just sharing what I can and entrusting everything, I believe that God’s providence will take care of the rest. Marvelous gifts and blessings are always given when we are willing to entrust ourselves with a grateful heart.

There are many things that I can’t do by myself, but there are always powerful and marvelous helping hands around me. Assistance comes from the good intentions and intercessions of angels both in heaven and on earth, as well as the constant prayers of our families and acquaintances.

One sister who knows me well laughed at me when I participated in the vocation meeting. Perhaps she thought of me being unfit for such a role. With humility, I recognize and accept myself as I am. But the power of prayer and grace is much greater than the standards and limits set by humans.

Looking back, I admit that my calling is totally a gift from God and the fruit of many prayers. That is why I live this religious life with much gratitude and joy.

In team sports like volleyball or football, passing and tossing the ball to others is important. Appropriate and timely passing leads to success in the game.

In sports that involve many people, players don’t have to do everything by themselves. At least I can pass the ball to another person at the appropriate time and when necessary. Then, others can pursue and do better.

“… God loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:7-8).

공을 패스하는 아름다움 Beauty of passing the ball

경기도 여주에 있는 사도의 모후 피정 집에서 열흘 동안 연피정을 마치고 서울에서 열린 분원 성소자 담당 모임에 참석했다.

모임 첫날, 분원 성소 사목에 관련된 14명의 수녀들은 저마다 자신의 성소 이야기는 물론 각 분원 지역의 현실과 상황에 대해 나누었다.

둘째 날 오전에는 성령 안에서 나누는 대화에 대한 특강을 들었다. 강의 주제는 일상생활에서 하느님 백성이 함께 걸어가는 여정인 시노달리타스 정신을 어떻게 살아갈 수 있을까… 하는 것이었다. 우리는 생각과 삶의 방식을 바꾸며 변화시킬 수 있는 실제적인 방법들을 모색하며 고심했다.

오후에는 성소자 담당 모임 준비팀에서 각 교구 분원 공동체에서 활용할 수 있는 청소년 프로그램 가이드를 제시했다. 우리는 또한 오늘날 청소년, 특히 Z세대의 특징을 이해하도록 돕는 몇 가지 영상을 보았다.

그런 다음 2026년을 위해 저마다 계획한 새 프로그램에 대해 이야기하고 함께 기도하며 모임을 마무리했다.

나는 작은 분원 공동체에 살면서 여러 공동체 계획 가운데 성소자 담당이라는 직분을 받아들였다. 이 분야에 그다지 적합하지 않음을 나는 너무나도 잘 알고 있다. 그럼에도 때때로 우리가 맡는 역할은 개인 역량을 넘어선다. 우리 가운데 몇몇은 공동체의 선을 위해 여러 가지 역할을 해야 하기 때문이다.

처음에는 이 분야에 그다지 적극적으로 나서지 않았다. 내가 할 수 있는 것은 다만 성소자들을 위해 기도하는 것뿐이었다. 그런데 지난 여름 성지순례를 다녀온 다음 내 관점이 바뀌기 시작하여 한층 열린 마음으로 유연한 태도를 지니게 되었다.

빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리의 기적 이야기를 묵상하면서 나는 스스로 가진 것이 작거나 보잘것없다 해도 있는 그대로 기꺼이 내어 놓으며 나누는 법을 배웠다. 내가 할 수 있는 것을 기꺼이 나누고 모든 것을 맡겨 드리면, 그 나머지는 하느님의 섭리가 돌보아 주심을 믿는다. 감사하는 마음으로 자신을 흔쾌히 내어 맡길 때 놀라운 은총의 선물과 축복이 언제나 주어지기 마련이다.

나 혼자서는 할 수 없는 일들이 많지만, 내 주변에는 언제나 강력하고 놀라운 도움의 손길이 있다. 하늘과 땅에 있는 천사들의 선한 지향과 중재기도, 가족과 지인들의 끊임없는 기도가 도움을 준다.

나를 잘 아는 한 수녀님은 내가 성소자 담당 모임에 참석하는 것을 보고 웃었다. 아마도 내가 그 역할에 적합하지 않다고 생각한 듯하다. 나는 겸허하게 있는 그대로의 내 모습을 인정하고 받아들인다. 하지만 기도와 은총의 힘은 사람들이 정해 놓은 기준과 한계보다 훨씬 크다.

뒤돌아보면, 내 부르심은 온전히 하느님의 선물이며 수많은 기도의 결실이다. 그래서 나는 한없이 감사하는 마음으로 기쁘게 수도 생활을 한다.

배구나 축구 같은 팀 스포츠에서는 공을 다른 사람에게 패스하며 던져주는 것이 중요하다. 적절하고 때에 맞는 패스는 게임을 성공으로 이끈다.

여러 사람이 참여하는 스포츠에서 선수들은 모든 것을 혼자서 해서는 안 된다. 적어도 나는 적절한 시기에, 또 필요할 때 다른 사람에게 공을 패스해 줄 수 있다. 그러면 다른 사람들이 더 잘할 수 있다.

“…하느님께서는 기쁘게 주는 이를 사랑하십니다. 하느님께서는 여러분에게 모든 은총을 넘치게 주실 수 있습니다. 그리하여 여러분은 언제나 모든 면에서 모든 것을 넉넉히 가져 온갖 선행을 넘치도록 할 수 잇게 됩니다.”(2코린 9,7-8)
