Mount Cheongnyang 청량산
When I went for a mission at Galjeon Matia Catholic Church, one volunteer who welcomed us recommended Mount Cheongnyang Provincial Park in North Gyeongsang Province as a good spot to hike.
I looked for an opportunity to go hiking, but I couldn’t find time. Finally, thanks to the consideration of the community, I was able to have a free day, so I took a city bus and a taxi to get there.
First, I dropped by Cheongnyang Temple, built in 663 by Buddhist monk Wonhyo (617-686) during the Silla period. There are three treasured Buddha statues in this temple.
During the Silla period, there were 27 Buddhist hermitages on Mount Cheongnyang thanks to the revival of Buddhism. At that time, even the 12 mountain peaks of Mount Cheongnyang were named in the Buddhist style, but as Buddhism declined, their names were changed to a more Confucian style.
Anyhow, then and now, climbing a mountain while appreciating the natural scenery and the wonders of the landscape is still a cultural activity that strengthens and inspires the body and mind while providing good energy.
Mental, physical and spiritual cultivation were the goals of scholars, along with academic pursuits. Traveling to famous mountains was a dream of many scholars. They searched for renowned mountains, especially during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Mountain tourism in the Joseon period covered Mounts Geumgang, Jiri, Cheongnyang, Sogni, Gaya, Baekdu and Halla.
Mount Cheongyang's highest peak is Janginbong at 870 meters. It was frequented by scholars, particularly in the 17th century, and they left impressive travelogues.
As I walked along the mountain trails, I found that Mount Cheongnyang is filled with interesting legends, historical relics and stories. The panoramic views of 12 peaks, eight caves and four wells creates fantastic landscapes.
Many scholars of the Joseon period, including Ju Se-bung (1495-1554), a civil official and governor of Punggi Province, and Toegye Yi Hwang (1502-1571), considered Mount Cheongnyang to be a famous mountain, comparable to the Wuyi Mountains in China, frequented by the philosopher, writer and historian Zhou Xi (1130-1200). Toegye regarded Mount Cheongnyang as a paradise where scholars could escape reality, enjoy leisure time and hone the mind through reading books.
At the age of 13, Toegye used to study at the Confucian academy Osandang on Mount Cheongnyang, walking along the Yedeon trail near the Nakdong River. The trails are now called “Toegye’s path of contemplation.”
During the Unified Silla period (676 B.C.-935 A.D.), Kim Saeng, one of the four great masters of calligraphy, lived in seclusion in a cave on the mountain for 10 years to develop his writing skills. As a result, he became a renowned calligrapher.
Confucian scholar Choi Chi-won (857-900) also read the books and played the ancient game of go (baduk) on this mountain. As a sacred place of Confucianism, Mount Cheongnyang was a center of study and Righteous Army activities.
King Gongmin (1330-1374), the 31st King of Goryeo, also stopped by Mount Cheongnyang while taking refuge in Andong as he fled the Red Turban invasions.
Various stories and legends enrich the historic presence of mountains. Nature has so many impressive stories and touching wonders. Just walking on and on along the mountain trails, I feel refreshed, renewed and inspired in many ways.
“Let the earth bless the Lord … Mountains and hills, bless the Lord … Everything growing on earth, bless the Lord … You springs, bless the Lord … Seas and rivers, bless the Lord … All you birds of the air, bless the Lord.” (Daniel 3:74-80)

Mount Cheongnyang
