Going on a pilgrimage 순례를 하며

Pilgrims of hope. This is the motto of all Catholics around the world in celebration of the jubilee. As pilgrims of hope, 22 sisters of the Daughters of Saint Paul and two brothers of the Society of Saint Paul have embarked on a pilgrimage from Aug. 18 to Sept. 3, following the footsteps of Saint Paul, who lived and proclaimed the Good News in Turkey and Greece.

Pilgrimage is always inspiring and challenging. In celebrating the jubilee year of hope and trust, many faithful people are willing to make a pilgrimage. I believe that Saint Paul will inspire and empower our spiritual journeys, and I also believe that my remaining religious life will grow stronger through this pilgrimage.

Within the Korean Catholic Church, the religious movement for spiritual renewal is going on under the title of the year of Consecrated Life. In our congregation, the 12th General Chapter will be held in September in Rome. As if to be the underlying seed of all these religious events, we are going on a pilgrimage with hope.

I have personally renewed myself in the first half of this year while living in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province. To train myself, I have regularly climbed little mountains up to the point of losing 10 kilograms. I have also tried to skip having dinner.

Furthermore, I have looked back on my whole life. Thanks to the providence of God, I could have the eyes of kindness and goodness. As I opened my inner eyes of mercy and love, I could see so many gifts alive around me. I have met so many good people in Andong.

This pilgrimage is God's unexpected gift. Thanks to the generous and thoughtful sisters in the Korean provincial community, I planned one month’s spiritual exercises and prepared for this upcoming retreat in September.

All of a sudden, one of the sisters preparing for pilgrimage injured her leg and had to wear a cast. The pilgrimage group was in need of another sister to make up for her place and I was chosen because I missed the opportunity for the pilgrimage several years ago when my fellow sisters made it.

This pilgrimage is a once-in-a-lifetime event for religious sisters, for we take turns to make it by year of profession.

Surprising gifts are sometimes hidden, but they are always given in various ways as free and unexpected providence. Giving and receiving gifts always makes us joyful and happy.

Recently, as I went to Daejeon to visit my family, I noticed a long line in front of Sungsimdang bakery in Lotte Department Store and even in Daejeon Station. It seemed that people did not mind waiting in long lines because they knew some portion of the proceeds went to socially disadvantaged people.

Like a long winding line in front of Sungsimdang, gifts go around with the help of good and generous people. A “cheerful giver” always gives something from the heart with joy, willingness, thanks and compassion.

“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-8)

순례를 하며 Going on a pilgrimage

‘희망의 순례자들’은 희년을 기념하는 세계 모든 가톨릭 신자들의 모토다. 희망의 순례자로서 성바오로딸수도회 수녀 22명과 성바오로수도회 수사 2명이 튀르키예(터키)와 그리스에 살면서 복음을 전한 성 바오로의 발자취를 따라 8월 18일부터 9월 3일까지 순례를 떠났다.

순례는 언제나 많은 영감을 주며 도전하게 한다. 희망과 믿음으로 가득한 희년을 기념하며 많은 신자가 기꺼이 순례를 떠난다. 성 바오로께서 우리의 영적 여정에 영감을 불러일으키며 힘을 불어넣어 주리라 믿는다. 또한 이 순례를 통해 앞으로 남아 있는 내 수도생활이 한층 굳건해지리라 믿는다.

한국천주교회에서는 ‘축성봉헌생활의 해’라는 이름으로 수도자들의 영적 쇄신을 위한 움직임이 계속 일어나고 있다. 우리 수도회에서는 9월에 로마에서 제12차 총회가 개최된다. 마치 이 모든 종교 활동의 밑바탕에 뿌려진 씨앗이라도 되듯 우리는 희망을 가득 안고 순례길에 나선다.

나는 올해 상반기에 경북 안동에 살면서 개인적으로 한층 새롭게 되었다. 나 자신을 단련하기 위해 나지막한 산에 꾸준히 올랐더니 몸무게가 10킬로그램 정도 빠졌고 저녁 식사도 거르려고 노력했다.

더 나아가 나는 내 삶을 돌아보면서 하느님의 섭리 덕분에 자애롭고 선의로 가득한 눈길을 가지게 되었다. 자비와 사랑으로 채워진 내면의 눈을 뜨면서 내 주변에 수많은 선물이 살아 숨 쉬고 있음을 보았다. 안동에 살면서 나는 좋은 사람들을 많이 만났다.

이 순례는 하느님께서 나에게 주신 뜻밖의 선물이다. 관대하고 사려 깊은 한국 관구 공동체 수녀님들 덕분에 나는 9월에 있는 한 달 피정을 계획하고 준비해 왔다.

그런데 순례를 준비하던 수녀님 한 분이 갑자기 다리를 다쳐 깁스를 해야 했다. 그리하여 순례 그룹은 그분 자리를 메꿀 또 하나의 수녀가 필요하게 되었다. 몇 년 전, 나의 동기 수녀들이 순례를 떠났는데, 그 당시 함께할 수 없었기에 이번 기회가 나에게 주어졌다.

이 순례는 수녀들에게 평생 한 번 주어지는 각별한 행사다. 수녀들은 서원 연도별로 돌아가며 성지순례를 간다.

깜짝 선물은 때때로 숨어 있지만, 예상치 못한 섭리처럼 언제나 여러 방식으로 주어진다. 선물을 주고받는 것은 늘 우리를 기쁘고 행복하게 한다.

최근 가족을 만나러 대전에 갔을 때, 롯데백화점과 대전역에 있는 성심당 빵집 앞에 길게 늘어선 줄을 보았다. 수익금의 일부가 사회적 약자들에게 기부된다는 것을 알고 있기에 긴 줄을 서는 것을 마다하지 않는 것 같았다.

성심당 앞에 길게 늘어선 줄처럼 선물은 선하고 관대한 사람들의 도움에 힘입어 여기저기 돌아다닌다. “기쁘게 주는 이”는 언제나 기꺼이 기쁨과 감사와 사랑을 담아 마음에서 우러나오는 무언가를 베푼다.

“적게 뿌리는 이는 적게 거두어들이고 많이 뿌리는 이는 많이 거두어들입니다. 저마다 마음에 작정한 대로 해야지, 마지못해 하거나 억지로 해서는 안 됩니다. 하느님께서는 기쁘게 주는 이를 사랑하십니다. 하느님께서는 여러분에게 모든 은총을 넘치게 주실 수 있습니다. 그리하여 여러분은 언제나 모든 면에서 모든 것을 넉넉히 가져 온갖 선행을 넘치도록 할 수 있게 됩니다.”(2코린 9,6-8)
