Joyfully with dignity 기쁘고 떳떳하게

By the grace of God, I was sent to other countries to live a blessed but challenging missionary life. The most merciful and generous God gave me various opportunities to experience something new, inspiring and worthwhile. Nevertheless, I couldn’t endure and overcome diverse situations, and I had to come back earlier than I expected. I wasn’t able to adjust myself to missionary life that regards the communion of life as the most fundamental aspect of the religious life.

In gratitude, I tried hard with hope and enthusiasm, but I renounced everything without challenging myself in front of vertical limits. The most critical problem was resulted in touch human relationships.

I was reluctant to face reality but I listened to the inner voice. As a result, I gave up my dream to live a missionary life. Everything took much courage, faith and perseverance.

Facing my limitations, I was sent to Andong and I met the admirable Bishop Rene Dupont (1929-) who came to Korea in 1954 as a missionary priest from France. His cheerful and encouraging presence in Korea has inspired so many people. He went through the most challenging periods of Korea filled with economic poverty, lots of political and social ups and downs and marvelous transformation as well.

Bishop Dupont was ordained a priest in 1953 as a member of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (Missions Etrangeres De Paris). Since childhood, he wanted to be a priest to live like Jesus.

He served at the Diocese of Daejeon from 1955 to 1967. Then, he was ordained a bishop in 1969 and served for the sake of the Diocese of Andong up to 1990. Finally, he obtained Korean citizenship in 2019.

He always encourages us to live joyfully with dignity and gratitude. Joy is the keyword of his pastoral life, and his simple and happy presence witnesses the joy of the Gospels.

In every Catholic church or organization in Andong, there is a large stone tablet expressing the Andong Diocese Mission Statement titled “Joyfully with dignity”:

Joyfully with dignity

We live in this place

with an open mind.

We live simply,

cherish life,

share and serve one another,

and build a joyful Kingdom of God.

Truly, to build, live and proclaim the joyful Kingdom of God, what we need most is openness, simplicity, respect for life, sharing and service.

What led him to sustain his missionary life in Korea for 71 years? I believe the most inspiring inner power came from the constant communication with God and his father, who sent him a letter once a week for 30 years. Communion of life is a powerful source of energy to live joyfully with dignity.

He always kept in mind his responsibility as a lifelong missionary. He respected Korean culture and wholeheartedly supported the poor, the marginalized and the abandoned. He dedicated himself to promoting human rights for the disadvantaged and the rural farmers.

Being called the candlelight of Andong and the godfather of rural ministry, Bishop Dupont now lives at Bongyang cultural village in Uiseong. The only reason for him to settle in this village was because there was not a single Catholic there. His house is always open wide to everybody.

Living in Andong, it is such a blessed joy for us to visit him once a month for Confession. God provides everything.

기쁘고 떳떳하게 Joyfully with dignity 하느님 은총으로 나는 몇몇 나라에 파견되어 도전적이지만 축복 어린 선교사 삶을 살았다. 그지없이 자애롭고 관대하신 하느님은 나에게 여러 기회를 주시어 새롭고 가치로우며 영감을 주는 것들을 체험하게 하셨다. 그럼에도 나는 나에게 주어진 여러 상황을 견디지 못해 예상보다 일찍 되돌아왔다. 수도 생활에서 가장 근본적인 삶의 친교를 중요하게 여기는 선교사 생활에 적응하지 못한 것이다.

감사하는 마음으로 희망을 품고 열정을 다해 노력했지만 스스로 직면해야 했던 수직 한계 앞에서 나는 그만 모든 것을 내려 놓을 수밖에 없었다. 가장 심각한 문제는 힘겨운 대인 관계였다.

나는 현실을 바로 보지 못한 채 망설였지만 내면의 소리에 귀 기울였고, 그 결과 선교사 삶에 대한 꿈을 포기했다. 그 모든 여정에는 많은 용기와 믿음, 인내가 요구되었다.

이러한 나 자신의 한계를 직면하며 안동에 파견되었는데 놀랍게도 1954년 프랑스 출신의 선교사 사제로 한국에 파견된 르네 두봉(1929-) 주교님을 만났다. 두봉 주교님은 참으로 선한 분이다. 한국에 현존하면서 늘 기쁜 마음으로 주변 사람들을 격려하는 두봉 주교님은 많은 사람에게 영감을 준다. 두봉 주교님은 경제적 빈곤, 수없이 거듭된 정치 사회적 흥망성쇠는 물론 놀라운 변화로 가득한 한국에 머물면서 가장 어려운 시기를 거쳤다.

1953년 파리외방전교회(Missions Etrangeres De Paris) 소속으로 사제품을 받은 두봉 주교님은 어렸을 때부터 사제가 되고 싶어했다. 예수님처럼 살기를 바랐기 때문이다.

두봉 주교님은 1955년부터 1967년까지 대전교구에서 사목한 다음 1969년 주교로 서품되어 1990년까지 안동교구를 위해 헌신했다. 2019년에 이르러서는 한국 시민권까지 얻었다.

두봉 주교님은 언제나 기쁘고 떳떳하게, 감사하는 마음으로 살라고 독려한다. 기쁨은 주교님이 펼치는 사목 활동의 핵심어다. 단순하고 쾌활한 주교님의 현존은 복음의 기쁨을 증거한다.

안동에 자리한 모든 가톨릭 교회와 단체에는 안동교구 사명선언문인 "기쁘고 떳떳하게"를 새긴 커다란 비석이 있다.

기쁘고 떳떳하게

우리는 이 터에서

열린 마음으로

소박하게 살고

생명을 소중히 여기며

서로 나누고 섬김으로써

기쁨 넘치는

하느님 나라를 일군다.

참으로 기쁨으로 가득한 하느님 나라를 세우고 살며 선포하기 위해 우리에게 가장 필요한 것은 열린 마음과 단순함, 생명을 존중하는 마음, 나눔과 섬김이다.

두봉 주교님이 한국에 머물러 지난 71년을 한결같이 선교사로서 살아가게 한 원동력은 무엇일까? 가장 큰 영감을 주는 내적 힘은 하느님과 나눈 끊임없는 대화, 나아가 30년 동안 일주일에 한 번씩 한결같이 편지를 보낸 아버지와의 교류에서 나왔다고 믿는다. 삶의 친교는 기쁘고 떳떳하게 살아가게 하는 강력한 힘의 원천이다.

두봉 주교님은 책임감을 갖고 평생 선교사로서 살아갈 것을 늘 명심했고, 한국 문화를 존중했으며, 가난한 사람, 소외된 사람, 버림받은 사람들을 마음을 다해 지원했다. 불우한 사람들과 농부들의 인권 도모에도 헌신했다.

안동의 촛불이자 농촌 사목의 대부로 불리는 두봉 주교님은 현재 의성 봉양 문화마을에 사신다. 주교님이 이 마을에 정착한 유일한 이유는 이곳에 가톨릭 신자가 한 명도 없었기 때문이다. 주교님의 집은 언제나 모든 이에게 활짝 열려 있다.

안동에 살면서 한 달에 한 번 고해성사를 위해 주교님을 방문하는 것은 정말 크나큰 축복이다. 하느님은 모든 것을 마련해 주신다.
