'The Boys in the Boat' 배를 탄 소년들

What inspires us to endure and persevere in a difficult situation? What leads us to be indomitable and consistent?

Some of us might think of it as the desire for wealth, power, study, authority, fame or honor.

Watching "The Boys in the Boat," a film released in 2023, based on the true story of American rower Joe Rantz, I felt the underlying motivation to endure hardships came from a desperate sense of perseverance to overcome an avoidable situation due to extreme poverty.

Based on the 2013 bestselling novel written by Daniel James Brown, "The Boys in the Boat" tells the story of Joe Rantz and the 1936 U.S. Olympic rowing team. It is an inspiring story of perseverance, dedication and unity that nine young men — eight rowers and one coxswain — experienced as members of the University of Washington's rowing team.

Joe Rantz had painful memories of his father, who abandoned him when he was a teenager. Through continuous ups and downs during the era of the Great Depression, he became freer from his hurts.

Being left alone, he had to earn money to study at university. At one point, he couldn't continue studying due to his financial situation. So, he looked for a job and finally applied to join the rowing team to support his education and housing expenses.

He was so poor that he had to wear shoes with a hole in each sole. It was this desperate reality that led him to challenge himself to go beyond the limits. Once accepting the situation as it is, we are prone to do our best to transcend from reality.

It took eight rowers to win the competition, but the boat maker always emphasized that they were "not eight but one." He kept saying that they could win only when they were synchronized for the goal with one another.

Moving and handling the boat's key in the same direction requires extensive communitarian training, self-discipline and self-control. Each member must be trained well to wait for others to move in the same space and motion. As you know, this process requires a considerable sense of endurance, perseverance and balance.

Our inner strength lies not in individual capacity alone. Amazing and mysterious power comes when each member collaborates and supports one another.

In the end, the University of Washington rowing team won its epic quest for the gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

By the way, how many of us would wear shoes with holes nowadays? These days, with lots of convenient materials, nobody likes to wear worn-out shoes. Some people keep changing their shoes so often that used shoes — still looking good — are displayed at the Savers and Goodwill donation centers.

We shall have to remember the older generations of our parents and grandparents who made many sacrifices for the better education of their children. Their painful and desperate experiences of miserable poverty led them to challenge and overcome all obstacles.

As a religious sister who made a vow of poverty, I am very mindful of living simply in many ways. I still enjoy wearing my worn-out sandals. I try not to have unnecessary things, and this renunciation leads me to spiritual freedom.

어려운 상황에서도 참고 견디며 끈기 있게 살아가도록 영감을 주는 것은 무엇일까? 과연 무엇이 불굴의 의지로 한결같이 걸어가도록 이끌까?

어떤 이들은 그 힘이 부유나 권력, 학업이나 권위, 명성 또는 명예에 대한 갈망이라고 생각한다.

미국인 조정 선수 조 랜츠의 실제 이야기를 토대로 2023년에 개봉된 영화 "배를 탄 소년들(The Boys in the Boat)"을 보면서 나는 극심한 빈곤으로 피할 수 없는 상황을 극복해 내려는 처절한 인내심이 바로 역경을 견뎌내는 근본 동기임을 느꼈다.

2013년 다니엘 제임스 브라운이 쓴 베스트셀러 소설을 바탕으로 만든 이 영화는 조 랜츠와 1936년 베를린 올림픽에 출전한 조정팀 이야기를 다룬다. 워싱턴대학교 조정팀에 속한 9명의 젊은이들(노를 젓는 선수 8명과 키잡이 1명)이 체험한 끈기와 헌신, 일치에 대한 이야기는 많은 영감을 준다.

조 랜츠는 청소년이었을 때 자신을 버린 아버지에 대한 가슴 아픈 기억을 품고 있었는데, 대공황 때 거듭 체험한 삶의 기복을 거치며 자신의 상처에서 자유로워졌다.

홀로 남겨진 그는 대학에서 공부하기 위해 학비를 벌어야 했는데, 그러던 어느 날 몹시 궁핍하게 되어 공부를 계속 할 수 없었다. 일자리를 찾아 나선 그는 마침내 조정팀에 지원하여 학비와 주거비를 충당했다.

그는 무척 가난하여 밑창에 구멍이 난 신발을 신고 다녀야 했는데, 이처럼 절박한 현실은 그로 하여금 한계를 넘어 도전하게 했다. 주어진 상황을 있는 그대로 받아들이면 그 현실을 초월하기 위해 최선을 다하기 마련이다.

대회에서 우승하려면 8명의 조정 선수가 있어야 하는데, 배를 만든 장인은 한결같이 그들이 "8명이 아니라 하나"임을 힘주어 말했다. 한 사람 한 사람이 목표를 향해 서로에게 동기를 부여하며 하나 될 때 비로소 승리할 수 있다고 그는 거듭 말했다.

배를 움직이는 키를 한 방향으로 저으려면 상당한 공동체 훈련과 자아 단련, 자기 통제가 필요하다. 각 구성원은 서로 같은 공간을 지니고 같은 동작으로 움직일 때까지 기다리도록 잘 훈련되어야 하는데, 이 과정에는 상당한 인내와 끈기, 균형 감각이 필요하다.

우리의 내적 힘은 개인 역량에만 달려 있지 않다. 놀랍고도 신비로운 힘은 각 구성원이 협력하며 서로 지원할 때 나온다.

마침내 워싱턴대학교 조정팀은 1936년 베를린 올림픽 금메달을 향한 영웅적 도전에서 승리했다.

그런데 요즘 우리 가운데 얼마나 많은 사람이 구멍 난 신발을 신을까? 요즘에는 편리한 제품이 많이 나와 낡은 신을 신고 다니는 것을 좋아하는 사람이 거의 없다. 어떤 이들은 신을 너무 자주 갈아 신어 여전히 좋은 상태인 중고 신발이 세이버스나 굿윌 기부 센터에 많이 진열되어 있다.

우리는 자녀들이 더 나은 교육을 받도록 많은 희생을 치른 부모와 조부모 세대를 기억해야 한다. 비참할 만큼 가난한 상황을 처절하게 겪어낸 이들의 체험은 모든 걸림돌에 도전하여 극복하도록 이끈다.

청빈 서원을 한 수도자로서 나는 여러 면에서 단순하게 사는 것에 깨어 있다. 나는 여전히 낡은 샌들을 즐겨 신으며 불필요한 물건을 지니지 않으려고 노력하는데, 이처럼 내려 놓음은 나를 영적 자유로 이끈다.
