Being in nature 자연 속에서…

Looking at flowers lets me be happy and peaceful. It is always a cheerful sight to see our neighbors taking care of flowers and plants here and there.

When I take a walk in the mountains, what a joy to see a good man planting various flowers and taking care of them along the walking paths.

In another nearby mountain ridge, there is a man who constantly tidies up the winding walking path by pulling weeds with an iron rake. One day, I asked him if he is a volunteer for an environmental protection group. He replied simply, “I am just exercising by pulling weeds.”

While walking the trails, I observe farmers reclaiming a field at the foot of the mountains. Sometimes, I appreciate wild flowers blooming in their fields. Being surrounded by flowers and being friendly with nature always bring us much joy, hope and consolation.

I think the spirit of being in nature and with nature has been inherited from Toegye Yi Hwang (1501-70). To him, nature was not a simple background, but an object of realizing human nature and cultivating the self sincerely. He believed that nature and humans are mirrors that reflect each other.

Based on this philosophy, he built Dosan Seowon, an academy where people could appreciate the harmony of nature, study and human beings. He liked plum blossoms best, believing that they stood for endurance and self-cultivation.

In the beginning, he built Dosan Seodang from 1557 to 1561. A larger compound was then established in 1574, surrounded by various plants and flowers. Later, in 1970, it was repaired and cleaned up. Finally, in 2019, it was declared a holy place and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On Korea's 1,000 won bill, the portrait of Toegye Yi Hwang appears with a blossoming plum tree, Myeongryundan lecture hall at what is now Sungkyunkwan University, and “Gyesangjeonggeodo,” is a landscape painting by Gyeomjae Jeong Seon (1676-1759).

Toegye served in various public offices, but he aspired to devote himself to studying, cultivating his character and teaching. As a result, he became a man of light, leading future generations.

According to his dualistic theory of principle and energy, we must govern our vital energy to cultivate a good heart and live righteously, and to manage all things in accordance with the natural order.

In “li-qi” dualism, there are “Four Beginnings” of li (meaning essential principle, formative element or moral standard, in relation to innate human nature) and “Seven Emotions” of qi (the existential force or material energy to realize li, in relation to temper).

The Four Beginnings are the compassionate heart, the yielding heart, the heart with a sense of shame and the heart that judges right from wrong. The Seven Emotions are joy, anger, sorrow, fear, love, hatred, and desire.

This dualistic theory invites us to live a vigilant life with a sense of constant self-discipline that Neo-Confucian scholars practiced day and night.

“The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I lack. In green pastures he makes me lie down, to still waters he leads me, he restores my soul. He guides me along right paths for the sake of his name.” (Psalms 23:1-3)

자연 속에서 Being in nature...

꽃들을 바라보기만 해도 흐뭇하고 평온하다. 이웃들이 여기저기서 피어나는 꽃과 식물을 가꾸는 모습은 바라보기만 해도 언제나 즐겁다.

산길을 따라 여러 모양의 꽃을 심고 돌보는 마음 착한 사람을 만나면 얼마나 기쁜지 모른다.

어느 날 가까이 있는 산등성이를 오르다 쇠스랑으로 구불구불 이어지는 산길에 난 잡초를 뽑으며 깔끔하게 청소하는 사람을 만난 적이 있다. 그가 혹시 환경 보호 단체에 속한 자원봉사자인지 물었더니, 그는 단순히 "운동 삼아 잡초를 뽑고 있다”고 말했다.

산길을 걷다 보면 산기슭에 자리한 밭을 일구는 농부들을 더러 만난다. 이따금 밭 한복판에 활짝 핀 야생화가 눈길을 끈다. 꽃들에게 둘러싸여 자연과 친구가 되는 것은 언제나 큰 기쁨과 희망, 위로를 준다.

자연 속에서, 자연과 함께하는 것은 퇴계 이황(1501-1570)한테서 물려받은 정신이라고 생각한다. 퇴계에게 자연은 단순한 배경이 아니라, 인간 본성을 깨닫고 자신을 진지하게 갈고 닦으며 수양하는 대상이었다. 자연과 인간은 서로를 비추어 주는 거울이라고 그는 믿었다.

이러한 철학을 토대로 퇴계는 자연과 학문과 인간이 한데 어우러지는 조화로움을 누리도록 이끄는 도산서원을 세웠다. 그는 특히 매화를 무척 좋아했다. 매화가 인내와 수양을 상징한다고 믿었기 때문이다.

1557년 그는 먼저 도산서당을 세원 1561년에 완공했고, 1574년에는 더 큰 땅을 마련하여 서당 주변에 여러 식물과 꽃을 심었다. 그러다 세월이 흘러 1970년에 이르러 서당을 보수하여 정비했고, 마침내 2019년에는 한국 성리학의 성지로 지정되어 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 등재되었다.

1,000원짜리 한국 지폐에는 활짝 핀 매화나무와 성균관 명륜당을 배경으로 퇴계 이황의 초상이 그려져 있다. “계상정거도”는 겸재 정선(1676-1759, 조선시대 화가)이 그린 풍경화다.

퇴계는 여러 관직을 거쳤지만, 무엇보다 학문과 자신의 성품을 다스리는 수양, 그리고 가르치는 일을 추구했다. 그 결과, 그는 후세를 이끄는 빛의 사람(희망과 영감과 깨달음을 주는 사람)이 되었다.

그가 주장한 원리((理, principle)와 기운(氣, energy)을 아우르는 이원론에 따르면, 우리가 선한 마음을 지니기 위해 수양하며 의롭게 살아가고, 또 자연의 질서에 따라 모든 것을 다스리기 위해서는 무엇보다 우리 안에서 꿈틀거리는 활기찬 기운을 다스려야 한다.

“이기(理氣)” 이원론에는 이(理, 이치)에 속하는 “사단”과 기(氣, 기운)에 속하는 “칠정”’이 있다. 이(理)는 본질적 원리, 형성 요소, 도덕적 기준으로 인간의 본성과 관련이 있고, 기(氣)는 기질과 관련되는 것으로, 이(理)를 실현하기 위한 실존적 힘 또는 물리적 에너지를 뜻한다.

사단(四端, 이성적, 도덕적 판단)은 측은지심, 수오지심, 사양지심, 시비지심을 말하며, 칠정(七情, 일곱 가지 보편적 감정)은 기쁨(喜), 노여움(怒), 슬픔(哀), 두려움(懼), 사랑(愛), 미움(惡), 욕심(欲)이다.

이러한 이원론은 신유학자들이 밤낮으로 실천했던 끊임없는 자기 수양으로 깨어 있는 삶을 살도록 우리를 초대한다.

“주님은 나의 목자, 나는 아쉬울 것 없어라. 푸른 풀밭에 나를 쉬게 하시고 잔잔한 물가로 나를 이끄시어, 내 영혼에 생기를 돋우어 주시고 바른길로 나를 끌어 주시니, 당신의 이름 때문이어라.” (시편 23,1-3)

Fellowship day 친교의 날

On May 23, we participated in the 2026 Fellowship Day of the Diocese of Andong. We, Pauline, held a mini bookfair showcasing spiritual books, arranged by the generous consideration of the Lay Apostolate Council in the front yard of the Indoor Gymnasium of Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province.

It was a day of unity, sharing and fellowship among the Most Rev. Bishop John Chrysostom Kwon Hyeok-ju, the priests and the lay people. About 1,250 people gathered to celebrate.

Among 41 parishes in the Diocese of Andong, 22 parishes participated in various sports and games such as tennis, dodgeball, "yutnori" (a traditional board game played with four sticks), "jegichagi" (a kicking shuttlecock) and "tuho" (arrow throwing game), among others.

To liven up the mood, the eight-member Kalos Ensemble from the Punggi Parish performed all day long in front of the gymnasium, praising the Lord with beautiful songs.

Just before the opening Mass, the Pungmul Troupe of Uiseong Parish did a 20-minute performance using traditional instruments such as the "gwaenggwari" (small brass gong), "jing" (gong), "janggu" (hourglass drum) and "buk" (drum).

The troupe performed the osaekcheonnori, a traditional Korean folk play. For this presentation, the five-colored long cloths were hung from a central pillar at the back of the Indoor Hall. The troupe held them and spun around in a circle to weave or unravel the colorful cloths.

This performance was prepared to liven up the atmosphere during the celebration through vibrant colors and to pray for a bountiful harvest and harmony in the community.

Sharing fellowship through various presentations, the Diocese of Andong realizes the conversion of relationships bestowed upon by the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Bishop John Chrysostom mentioned in his homily the three steps of caring for others in the touching story of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37): approaching (see), listening (stop), and caring (touch).

The good Samaritan saw and came upon the victim, moved with compassion at the sight, approached him, poured oil and wine over his wounds, bandaged them, lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. Like the good Samaritan, God always reveals his merciful love by approaching us first, listening to our needs and faith, and taking care of our hurts and burdens in life.

“Go and do likewise.” Experiencing and witnessing the considerate and generous care for others, we are also invited to do the same as the good Samaritan did to a person in desperate need.

To be a mother for all, Bishop Chrysostom also visits the sick and prays for them. To be reborn as the house of God, parishes have pursued efforts to establish a care network for vulnerable families.

According to the pastoral plans of the Diocese of Andong, each priest is invited to be a companion and consoler for parishioners through pastoral ministry that reaches out first and listens to painful stories.

“Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.” (Luke 10:35)

친교의 날 Fellowship day

지난 5월 28일, 우리는 2026년 안동교구 친교의 날 행사에 참여했다. 우리 바오로딸은 평신도사도직협의회의 관대한 도움으로 경북 문경실내체육관 앞마당에서 영성 서적을 전시 판매했다.

권혁주 주교님을 비롯한 사제들과 평신도들이 하나 되어 나눔과 친교를 나누는 날이었는데, 1,250여 명이 한데 모여 축제를 지냈다.

안동교구에 속한 41개 본당 가운데 22개 본당 공동체가 참여하여 테니스, 피구, 윷놀이, 제기차기, 투호 등 여러 가지 스포츠와 게임을 했다.

친교 행사의 흥을 돋우기 위해 풍기 성당의 8인조 칼로스 앙상블이 실내체육관 앞에서 하루 종일 아름다운 노래를 부르며 주님을 찬양했다.

개막 미사 직전에는 의성 성당 풍물극단이 꽹과리와 징, 장구, 북과 같은 전통 악기를 연주하며 20분간 공연을 펼쳤다.

풍물극단은 한국 전통 놀이인 오색천놀이를 선보였다. 이 공연을 위해 실내체육관 홀 뒤쪽 한복판에 세운 기둥에 기다란 오색천이 매달려 있었다. 단원들은 저마다 오색천을 잡고 원을 그리며 빙글빙글 돌면서 천을 짜고 풀기를 거듭하였다.

오색천놀이는 화려한 색채로 친교의 날 축제 분위기를 고조시키고 풍성한 수확과 공동체의 일치를 기원하기 위해 마련되었다.

안동교구는 다양한 행사로 친교를 나누며 성령의 은총으로 맺어진 관계의 회심을 체험하고 있다.

요한 크리소스토모 주교님은 강론에서 감동적인 착한 사마리아인 이야기(루카 10,29-37)를 나누며 이웃을 돌보는 세 가지 단계, 곧 다가감(바라봄 see), 경청(멈춤 stop), 돌봄(어루만짐 touch)에 대해 언급했다.

착한 사마리아인은 고통받는 사람을 보고 다가가 가엾은 마음이 들어 상처에 기름과 포도주를 붓고 싸맨 다음, 자기 노새에 태워 여관으로 데리고 가서 돌보아 주었다. 착한 사마리아인처럼 하느님은 언제나 먼저 우리에게 다가와 우리의 필요와 믿음을 경청하며 상처와 삶의 무게를 돌보심으로 자비로운 사랑을 드러내신다.

“가서 너도 그렇게 하여라.” 이웃을 향한 사려 깊고 관대한 돌봄을 체험하고 증거하면서, 우리 또한 착한 사마리아인처럼 절박한 상황에 처한 사람을 똑같이 돌보아주라는 초대를 받는다.

크리소스토모 주교님 또한 모든 이의 어머니가 되기 위해 환자들을 방문하여 기도해 주신다. 하느님의 집으로 거듭 나기 위해 각 본당은 취약 가정을 위한 돌봄 네트워크를 구축하려고 마음 쓰고 있다.

안동교구 사목 계획에 따르면, 모든 사제는 사람들에게 먼저 다가가 그들의 고통스러운 이야기에 귀 기울이는 사목을 함으로써 신자들의 동반자요 위로자가 되라는 초대를 받고 있다.

“저 사람을 돌보아 주십시오. 비용이 더 들면 제가 돌아올 때에 갚아 드리겠습니다.”(루카 10,35)
