Sam Vitale’s grotto for the Virgin Mary 샘 비탈레의 성모 동굴

Whenever I went to church with my devout mother, her first act of faith was to put her hands together to pray in front of Blessed Mary standing in the church's front yard. Our Blessed Mary is so close to people who faithfully believe in Jesus.

Almost every Catholic church or sanctuary has a grotto for the Blessed Virgin Mary who, in various forms and grottos, is honored by thousands of people who ask her for intercessions to Jesus.

So, lots of pilgrims keep coming to Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, Our Lady of Lourdes in France, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico and so on. Inherited with the historical tradition of the apparition of Mary in various places, miniature forms of particular grottos are well represented in Catholic churches and pilgrimage destinations worldwide.

The little grottos for Mary created by faithful families are also well maintained. On May 26, our community was invited to join a May Crowning Celebration for Mary with one of our neighborhood families. Sam Vitale has arranged and prepared for the event for 33 years.

As an ordinary parishioner and a faithful devotee of Blessed Mary, Vitale invites his acquaintances to this event in May every year. This year, over 300 people gathered to participate in a special celebration in the backyard of his house. One big tent was able to cover everybody. I have never seen such a giant tent.

It was so touching and beautiful to see children from various families walking in two lines to offer the flowers in front of the grotto! One of his little granddaughters offered the crown made of roses for Blessed Mary and prayed for some moments.

Especially in a culture where single, nuclear or divorced families are increasing more and more, it is encouraging to see children playing and praying together with their parents. With the help of gathering together to pray in front of Mary’s grotto, faithful devotion to Mary will be naturally inherited by children.

A violinist and an accordion player also performed the hymns during the celebration. They even played the melodies of old popular songs during a meal.

On the day of celebration, it still rained in the morning but stopped from noon. When we returned to our community late afternoon, it began to rain again. How interesting and amazing it is to see the flexibility of changeable weather. God truly listens to our earnest prayers that go up to the sky like incense.

Despite enduring and struggling due to his health issue, Sam visits our little chapel in the bookshop to pray from time to time. As a friend to our community, he shares many things with us.

Many years ago, he created a Blessed Mother Grotto at his alma mater, Christian Brothers College High School, in appreciation for his teachers. He also made a meaningful grotto in our community's backyard in Saint Louis. Now, we pray the rosary together with voluntary visitors at 5:30 pm from Monday to Friday, especially in May and October every year.

“Let my prayer be incense before you; my uplifted hands an evening offering. Set a guard, Lord, before my mouth, keep watch over the door of my lips," (Psalms 141:2-3).

샘 비탈레의 성모 동굴 Sam Vitale’s grotto for the Virgin Mary

신심 깊은 어머니와 함께 성당에 갈 때마다 어머님이 가장 먼저 하신 신앙 행위는 성당 앞뜰에 서 계신 성모님 앞에 두 손 모아 기도하는 것이었다. 이처럼 복되신 성모님은 예수님을 충실히 믿는 이들 가까이 함께 계신다.

모든 성당이나 성지에는 성모 동굴이 있다. 여러 모습으로 동굴 안에 계신 성모님은 예수님께 전구를 청하는 수많은 사람한테서 공경 받는다.

그리하여 수많은 순례자들이 포르투갈의 파티마 성모님, 프랑스의 루르드 성모님, 멕시코의 과달루페 성모님을 끊임없이 찾아 나선다. 여러 장소에 발현하신 성모님의 역사적 전통을 이어받아 특별히 만들어진 축소판 성모 동굴은 세계 곳곳에 자리한 가톨릭 교회와 순례 성지에 잘 드러나 있다.

신심 깊은 가정이 만든 소담한 성모 동굴도 잘 보존되고 있다. 5월 26일, 우리 공동체는 이웃처럼 가깝게 지내는 가정과 함께하는 성모 마리아 화관식에 초대받았다. 샘 비탈레는 33년 동안 이 행사를 기획하여 준비해 왔다.

평범한 신자로서 성모님을 충실히 사랑하며 따르는 샘 비탈레는 해마다 5월이 되면 이 행사를 주관하여 지인들을 초대한다. 올해는 300명이 넘는 사람들이 그의 집 뒷마당에서 열린 특별한 화관식에 참여하기 위해 모였다. 모든 이가 커다란 텐트 아래 모였는데, 이처럼 큰 텐트는 처음 보았다.

여러 가정에서 함께 온 아이들이 성모 동굴 앞에 꽃을 봉헌하기 위해 두 줄로 걸어가는 모습을 바라보는 것은 참 감동적이고 아름다웠다! 샘의 손녀딸 가운데 한 아이가 성모님께 장미 화관을 씌워드린 다음 잠시 기도했다.

미혼가족, 핵가족, 이혼가족이 늘어나는 문화 속에서 아이들이 부모님과 함께 지내며 기도하는 모습은 참으로 고무적이다. 성모 동굴 앞에 함께 모여 기도함으로써 성모님께 대한 깊은 신심은 자연스럽게 아이들에게 이어질 것이다.

바이올린 연주자와 아코디언 연주자가 화관식 내내 성가를 연주했으며 음식을 나누는 중에도 흘러간 팝송을 정겹게 들려주었다.

화관식이 진행되던 날 아침에 여전히 비가 내렸는데 정오가 되자 반갑게도 날이 개었다. 늦은 오후 무렵 우리가 공동체에 돌아왔을 때 비가 다시 내리기 시작했다. 변화무쌍한 날씨의 유연성을 보는 것은 참 흥미롭고 경이롭기만 하다. 분향처럼 하늘로 올라가는 간절한 기도를 하느님은 귀 기울여 들으신다.

샘은 건강 문제로 무던히 인내하며 고군분투함에도 이따금 바오로딸 서원에 있는 소성당에 찾아와 기도하며 우리 공동체의 벗으로서 많은 것을 나눈다.

몇 년 전 샘은 자신의 스승들께 감사드리는 뜻으로 모교인 크리스찬 브라더스 칼리지 고등학교에 성모 동굴을 마련해 주었다. 그는 또한 세인트루이스에 있는 우리 공동체 뒷마당에도 뜻깊은 성모 동굴을 만들어 주었다. 그 덕분에 우리는 매년 5월과 10월 월요일부터 금요일까지 오후 5시 30분에 자발적으로 찾아오는 이들과 함께 묵주기도를 바친다.

“저의 기도 당신 면전의 분향으로 여기시고 저의 손 들어 올리니 저녁 제물로 여겨 주소서. 주님, 제 입에 파수꾼을 세우시고 제 입술의 문을 지켜 주소서”(시편 141,2-3).

Beauty of Space 공간의 아름다움

“Jesus in Space: A True Story That’s Out of This World” written by Cecilia Cicone shares with us a touching experience of Tom Jones, an American astronaut who took Holy Communion (the Eucharist) when he traveled to outer space in the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1994. Space is such a marvelous and huge place that we keep dreaming of going beyond the Earth.

All the planets, including the Sun, and the moon are constantly moving while maintaining their appropriate space and distance among themselves.

What would happen if there is no space among all the existences in the universe?

If one of them loses its interspace concept, all of them will collide and be destroyed all of a sudden. Each planet is never tightly arranged; each of them co-exists with a sense of space and distance. So do we!

One day, I tried to light two candles on the altar in our chapel, but I couldn’t make them ignite immediately because I put the lighter too close to the wick. After several attempts, I realized the necessity of keeping a space between the wick and the lighter. Then, I could succeed in lighting the candles with the help of that space.

Whether small or big, cosmic or global, space is so important in our lives. Especially in our human relationships, having some space, giving room, and keeping a wise distance help us to understand, accept, love and appreciate others as they are.

When relationships are difficult, being apart for some time provides room for improvement. Surely, some space helps us to be free, peaceful, objective, reasonable and relaxed. Emotional and spiritual space also brings about healing, resilience and peace of mind.

Even in my room where I have some living necessities such as a bed, a chair, a desk, a lamp table, a bookshelf and a built-in wardrobe, I still need some space to be and move around.

At bookshops as well, when there is a wider entrance, people who enter feel more room to browse with inner freedom and peace.

The trees on the mountains also need some space to grow. When they are too close together and over-crowded, they can’t give enough room to one another and, as a result, they can’t grow to the fullest. So, the gardener regularly weeds out, prunes and thins them out appropriately.

Thus, the beauty of space is created. A physical sense of space is also related to a spiritual sense of moderation, temperance, emptiness and simplicity.

Many years ago, when I walked around the streets of Rome, I noticed many stores displaying a few products to create some space where we could appreciate their true values and merits.

Having some space in many ways lets me breathe in peace. Being over-crowded, being in a hurry, being overwhelmed due to overwork, being impatient, and, thus, living without peace of mind never allow us to appreciate the beauty of space. What a joyful gift it is to have some space along the way of our hectic lives!

“Do not let your hearts be troubled… I am the way and the truth and the life… Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” (John 14:1,6,27)

공간의 아름다움

세실리아 치코네가 쓴 “우주 속의 예수: 이 세상을 벗어나 체험한 실제 이야기”는 1994년, 인데버 우주왕복선을 타고 우주 여행을 할 때 우주선에 성체를 모시고 간 미국인 우주비행사 톰 존스의 감동적인 체험을 들려준다. 우주는 참으로 경이롭고 거대한 곳이어서 우리는 끊임없이 우리가 살고 있는 지구를 떠나 우주에 다다르려는 꿈을 꾼다.

태양을 비롯한 모든 행성과 달은 서로 적절한 공간과 거리를 유지하면서 끊임없이 움직인다.

우주의 모든 존재 사이에 공간이 없다면 어떻게 될까?

행성 가운데 그 어느 하나라도 공간 사이의 개념을 잃게 된다면, 모든 행성은 어느 순간 갑자기 충돌하여 파괴되고 말 것이다. 그래서 각 행성은 결코 촘촘하게 배열되어 있지 않으며 공간감과 거리감을 지니고 서로 공존한다. 우리도 그와 같다!

어느 날, 소성당 제단에 놓인 두 개의 촛불을 밝히려고 했는데 곧바로 불을 붙이지 못했다. 라이터를 심지에 너무 가까이 두었기 때문이다. 몇 차례의 시도 끝에 나는 심지와 라이터 사이에 반드시 공간이 있어야 함을 알았다. 그 공간 덕분에 비로소 나는 촛불을 밝힐 수 있었다.

크든 작든, 우주적이든 지구 차원이든, 공간은 우리 삶에서 매우 중요하다. 특히 인간관계에서 어느 정도 공간을 갖고 여유를 두며 지혜롭게 거리를 유지하는 것은 상대를 있는 그대로 이해하고 받아들이고 사랑하며 감사하는 데 도움이 된다.

관계가 어려울 때 한동안 떨어져 있으면 개선의 여지가 생긴다. 확실히 어떤 공간은 우리가 더 자유롭고 평화로우며, 객관적이고 합리적이며 편안해지는 데 도움을 준다. 정서적이고 영적인 공간은 또한 치유와 회복력, 마음의 평화를 준다.

침대, 의자, 책상, 탁자, 책장, 붙박이 옷장과 같은 생활 필수품이 있는 내 방에서도 나는 가만히 머물며 움직일 수 있는 공간이 필요하다.

책방에서도 드나드는 입구가 넓을수록 그곳에 들어가는 사람들은 내적 자유와 평화로움을 누리며 책을 훑어볼 수 있는 여유를 더 많이 느낀다.

산에 있는 나무들도 자라기 위해서는 어느 정도 공간이 필요하다. 서로 너무 가깝고 빽빽하게 들어서 있으면 서로에게 충분한 공간을 내어줄 수 없어 결과적으로 맘껏 자라날 수 없다. 그래서 정원지기는 정기적으로 잡초를 뽑고 가지치기를 하며 나무들을 적절하게 솎아낸다.

그리하여 공간의 아름다움이 창조된다. 공간에 대한 물리적 감각은 또한 균형, 절제, 비움, 단순함 같은 영적 감각에 관련된다.

여러 해 전, 로마 거리를 거닐며 가장 크게 눈에 띈 것은 많은 상점이 소수의 제품을 전시하여 그 진정한 가치와 장점을 음미할 수 있는 공간을 만드는 것이었다.

여러 면에서 약간의 공간이 있으면 평화롭게 숨 쉴 수 있다. 너무 빽빽하게 모여 들고, 서두르고, 과로에 압도당하고, 조바심을 내어 마침내 마음의 평화를 잃고 살아가는 것은 공간의 아름다움을 맛보지 못하게 한다. 바쁜 일상 가운데 잠시 여유를 지니는 것은 참으로 흐뭇한 선물이다!

! “너희 마음이 산란해지는 일이 없도록 하여라… 나는 길이요 진리요 생명이다…. 내가 너희에게 평화를 남기고 간다. 내 평화를 너희에게 준다. 내가 주는 평화는 세상이 주는 평화와 같지 않다. 너희 마음이 산란해지는 일도 겁을 내는 일도 없도록 하여라.”(요한 14,1.6.27)

Word of the Cross 십자가의 말씀

What would be the most appropriate word that can represent the cross of Jesus?

Humility, love, listening, surrender, emptiness and self-sacrifice. There are various expressions that can represent the symbolic meaning of the cross.

In my reflections, the best word for the cross is humility, which is the key to the spiritual life. Saint Augustine also regarded humility as the most important virtue in Christian life.

This year, as a part of the ongoing formation of sisters in our congregation, each of us is assigned to read "Redeeming Conflict: 12 Habits for Christian Leaders," written by Ann M. Garrido, and to share our thoughts in the community.

Reading three legendary stories given as "companions for the spiritual journey" at the beginning of the book, I found one common point: humility. One example is Francis' attitude of humble curiosity to listen and talk with the sultan Malik al-Kamil.

Encountering Francis dressed in his rags. Malik al-Kamil recognized him as a man of God and changed his attitude. Through their heartfelt dialogues, each of them changed their perspectives and adopted the goodness of the other.

"The Word of the Cross: the Character of Pauline preaching in 1 Corinthians 1:10-2:5" is the title of a master's thesis of our Junior Sister Amanda. Listening to her defending her thesis at Aquinas Institute of Theology in April, I deeply appreciated her thorough study and profound reflection on the words of the Cross, which she firmly believes to be the key to Pauline's preaching.

The words of the Cross go beyond any eloquent wisdom or lofty words when we proclaim the Good News. Sr. Amanda reflected on a distinctive application of rhetoric beyond the Greco-Roman rhetoric through the powerful words of the Cross of Christ.

Truly, Christ crucified is God's power and wisdom. "When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom … I resolved to know nothing … except Jesus Christ crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God's power." (1Corinthians 2:1-5)

Through Christ crucified, Paul inspired lots of people and touched and healed their hearts. Paul preached a person, not an idea. With Christ crucified, Paul invited people to have a deeper relationship with God.

The community or the parish is not a place of rhetoric filled with words but "a place of encounter with Christ" where faith is given, received, exercised, experienced, shared and thus witnessed. In this way, concrete acts of compassionate charity are realized.

Reading her thesis, I could feel how deeply she has integrated her learning and study into her community life. While studying at the Theology Institute, she has never neglected communitarian duties or her apostolate. As a vocational promoter, she never boasts about herself, and she is enthusiastic about organizing various activities, including talks with young people.

"The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)

Truly, the word of the Cross is living and effective, leading to discerning reflections and thoughts of the heart.

십자가의 말씀

예수님의 십자가를 표현하는 가장 적절한 말은 무엇일까?

겸손, 사랑, 귀 기울임, 내어 맡김, 비움, 자기 희생... 십자가의 상징적 의미를 드러내는 표현은 참으로 다양하다.

십자가를 드러내는 가장 좋은 표현은 영적 삶의 열쇠인 겸손이라고 생각한다. 성 아우구스티노 또한 겸손을 그리스도인의 삶에서 가장 중요한 덕목으로 여겼다.

올해 우리 수도회 지속 양성의 일환으로 우리는 앤 M. 가리도가 쓴 "갈등을 해결하는 방법: 그리스도인 리더들을 위한 12가지 습관"을 읽고 공동체에서 각자의 생각을 나누라는 숙제를 받았다.

이 책 첫 부분에 '영적 여정의 동반자'로 제시된 세 가지 전설적 이야기를 읽으면서 한 가지 공통점을 발견했는데, 그것은 곧 겸손이다. 그 한 예는 겸손한 호기심으로 가득한 프란치스코의 태도다. 프란치스코는 술탄 말릭 알카밀에게 귀 기울여 기꺼이 대화하고자 했다.

누더기 옷을 입은 프란치스코를 마주한 말릭 알카밀은 곧바로 그를 하느님의 사람으로 알아보고 태도를 바꾸었다. 진심 어린 대화를 나눈 그들은 각자의 관점을 바꾸고 상대의 장점을 받아들였다.

“십자가의 말씀: 코린토 신자들에게 보낸 첫째 서간 1장 10절에서 2장 5절에 나타난 설교하는 바오로의 특징”은 바오로딸 유기서원자 아만다 수녀가 쓴 석사학위 논문 제목이다. 지난 4월 아퀴나스 신학원에서 자신이 깊인 논문을 발표하는 내용을 들으면서 나는 십자가의 말씀에 대한 수녀님의 꼼꼼한 연구와 깊은 성찰에 깊이 공감하며 감사드렸다. 아만다 수녀는 바오로가 선포한 설교의 핵심은 곧 십자가의 말씀이라고 굳게 믿고 있다.

십자가의 말씀은 우리가 복음을 선포할 때 드러나는 어떤 웅변적 지혜나 뛰어난 말을 넘어선다. 아만다 수녀는 그리스도가 짊어진 십자가의 강력한 말씀에 비추어 그리스 로마 수사학을 넘어서는 수사학의 독특한 적용과 효과에 대해 숙고했다.

참으로 십자가에 못 박힌 그리스도는 하느님의 힘이요 지혜다. "나도 여러분에게 갔을 때에, 뛰어난 말이나 지혜로 하느님의 신비를 선포하려고 가지 않았습니다… 나는 예수 그리스도 곧 십자가에 못 박히신 분 외에는 아무것도 생각하지 않기로 결심하셨습니다. 사실 여러분에게 갔을 때에 나는 약했으며, 두렵고 또 무척 떨렸습니다. 나의 말과 나의 복음 선포는 지혜롭고 설득력 있는 언변으로 이루어진 것이 아니라, 성령의 힘을 드러내는 것으로 이루어졌습니다. 여러분의 믿음이 인간의 지혜가 아니라 하느님의 힘에 바탕을 두게 하려는 것이었습니다." (1코린토 2,1-5)

바오로는 십자가에 못 박힌 그리스도를 통해 많은 사람에게 감동을 주었고 그들의 마음을 어루만지며 치유했다. 바오로는 개념이 아니라 인격적으로 설득력 있게 선포했다. 바오로는 십자가에 못 박힌 그리스도와 함께 사람들을 초대하여 하느님과 더 깊은 관계를 이루게 했다.

공동체나 성당은 말이나 언변으로 가득한 수사학적 장소가 아니라 그리스도와 만나는 자리다. 그곳에서 우리는 신앙을 주고받고, 실천하고, 경험하고, 나누고 증거하며, 이를 통해 자애로운 사랑에서 우러나오는 행동을 구체적으로 실천한다.

아만다 수녀가 쓴 논문을 읽으면서 나는 수녀님이 스스로 공부하여 터득한 것을 자신이 사는 공동체에서 얼마나 깊이 통합하려고 마음 쓰는지 느낄 수 있었다. 수녀님은 신학원에서 공부하는 동안 공동체적 의무나 자신에게 주어진 사도직을 소홀히 한 적이 없다. 성소 담당자로서 수녀님은 자신을 자랑하여 내세운 적이 없으며, 젊은이들을 대상으로 한 강의를 비롯하여 다양한 활동을 조직하는 일에도 적극적이고 열정적이다.

“하느님의 말씀은 살아 있고 힘이 있으며 어떤 쌍날칼보다도 날카롭습니다. 그래서 사람 속을 꿰찔러 혼과 영을 가르고 관절과 골수를 갈라, 마음의 생각과 속셈을 가려냅니다”. (히브리 4,12)

참으로 십자가의 말씀은 살아 있고 힘이 있어 마음의 생각과 속셈을 분별하게 한다.
