Missionaries of hope 희망의 선교사

As sincere and active Christians, we are all missionaries of hope.

What does it mean to be a missionary of hope? To me, being a missionary of hope in our ordinary life means saying and doing something in an encouraging, positive and inspiring way.

I think that the positive way of talking to others with warm-hearted kindness, composure, generosity and a sense of humor is the springboard towards being and living as a missionary of hope.

How can we become missionaries of hope? How can we give and witness hope to people around us?

“Missionaries of Hope among all Peoples” is the motto of World Mission Day on October 19, part of Jubilee Year 2025. The central message of World Mission Day is “hope,” for we are desperately and sincerely seeking hope all over the world.

The message for World Mission Day points out various symptoms of human crisis, noting “a widespread sense of bewilderment, loneliness and indifference to the needs of the elderly, a reluctance to make an effort to assist our neighbors in need, being interconnected through highly developed technology without being truly related, obsession with efficiency, an attachment to material things and ambitions, being self-centered and egoistic.”

Recognizing the serious signs of problems in our society, the late Pope Francis sincerely shared his message for World Mission Day, which he wrote last January, before his death this past April.

In this message, he urges all people “to participate actively in the common evangelizing mission of the Church by witness of life and prayer, by sacrifices and by generosity.”

For the sake of witness of life and prayer through sacrifices and generosity, Pope Francis invites all of us to carry out the works of mercy, with particular attention to the poorest and weakest, the sick, the elderly, the needy, the afflicted and those excluded from materialistic and consumerist society.

His message is divided into three main themes: following in the footsteps of Christ, our hope; Christians as bearers and builders of hope among all the peoples; and renewing the mission of hope.

In short, to be missionaries of hope is an urgent call to action for the vulnerable, as revealed in the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). Moved with compassion, a Samaritan traveler came upon a victim and took care of him with mercy.

Truly, the fundamental vocation of every Christian is to be bearers of hope, messengers and builders of hope, like the Samaritan, in the footsteps of Christ, our hope.

How can we renew the mission of hope in our lives? According to Pope Francis, the best way to renew the mission of hope in a communitarian process of evangelization is prayer.

Above all, the missionaries of hope are men and women of prayer. Prayer based on the Word of God, particularly the Psalms, is the primary attitude required of a missionary, as we can see in the life of Saint Therese and many other saints.

By healing and forgiving sins, Jesus restored and became the divine missionary of hope. In following Jesus Christ, our hope, we are also called to be bearers, restorers and builders of hope among unhappy humanity.

“They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on eagles’ wings; They will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

희망의 선교사 Missionaries of hope

진실하고 활기찬 신앙인으로서 우리는 누구나 희망의 선교사다.

희망의 선교사가 된다는 것은 무엇을 뜻일까? 나에게 희망의 선교사가 된다는 것은 일상생활 가운데 서로 격려하고 긍정적으로 대하고 영감을 주며 말하고 행동하는 것을 의미한다.

따뜻한 마음에서 우러나온 친절과 여유로움, 관대함과 유머 감각을 지니고 이웃에게 긍정적으로 이야기하는 것이 희망의 선교사로서 살아가는 디딤돌이라고 생각한다.

어떻게 희망의 선교사가 될 수 있을까? 어떻게 우리 주변 사람들에게 희망을 주며 삶으로 증언할 수 있을까?

“모든 민족을 위한 희망의 선교사”는 2025년 희년에 맞이한 10월 19일 전교 주일의 모토다. 전교 주일의 핵심 메시지는 희망이다. 세계 곳곳에서 참으로 절박한 마음으로 희망을 찾아 나서고 있기 때문이다.

전교 주일 담화는 인간이 마주한 위기의 심각한 증상들, 곧 “팽배한 혼란, 노인의 고독과 버려짐, 어려운 이웃을 돕기를 주저하는 태도, 고도로 발달된 기술로 상호 접속되어 있지만 서로 관계 맺고 있지 않음, 효율성과 물질과 야망에 대한 집착, 자기 중심적이고 이기적인 태도”를 언급한다.

우리 사회가 직면한 문제들의 심각한 증상들을 인지한 프란치스코 교황은 지난 4월 선종하기 전, 1월에 전교 주일 담화를 진지하게 나누었다.

전교 주일 메시지에서 교황은 모든 이에게 “삶과 기도를 통한 증언,

희생과 너그러운 마음으로 교회의 공통된 복음화 사명”에 적극 참여할 것을 격려한다. 프란치스코 교황님은 희생과 관대함을 통한 삶의 증언과 기도를 위해 자비의 활동을 실천하도록 우리 모두를 초대한다. 특히 가장 가난하고 약한 이들, 병자들, 노인들, 도움이 필요한 이들, 고통받는 이들, 물질적이고 소비적인 사회에서 배제된 이들에게 특별한 관심을 기울이길 희망한다.

교황님 메시지는 우리의 희망이신 그리스도의 발자취를 따르기, 만민을 위한 희망의 전달자이자 건설자인 그리스도인이 되기, 희망의 사명을 새롭게 하기 등 세 가지 핵심 주제로 구성되어 있다.

간단히 말해, 희망의 선교사가 된다는 것은 착한 사마리아인의 비유(루카 10,25-37)가 이야기하듯 취약한 이들을 위해 행동하라는 시급한 요청이다. 여행을 하던 사마리아인은 피해자를 보고 가엾은 마음이 들어 자비를 베풀며 돌보아주었다.

참으로 모든 그리스도인의 근본적 소명은 사마리아인처럼 우리의 희망이신 그리스도의 발자취를 따라 희망의 전령이요, 희망의 전달자이자 건설자가 되는 것이다.

우리 삶 가운데 희망을 전하라는 사명을 어떻게 새롭게 할 수 있을까? 프란치스코 교황님에 따르면, 복음화의 공동체적 과정에서 희망의 사명을 새롭게 하는 가장 좋은 길은 기도하는 것이다.

희망의 선교사들은 무엇보다 기도하는 사람들이다. 하느님 말씀, 특히 시편을 바탕으로 한 기도는 선교사에게 가장 필요한 주된 자세인데, 이는 소화 데레사 성인의 삶을 비롯한 여러 성인들의 삶에서 엿볼 수 있다.

예수님은 사람들을 치유하며 죄를 용서함으로써 회복시켜 희망의 거룩한 선교사가 되셨다. 우리 또한 우리의 희망이신 예수 그리스도의 발자취를 따라 불행한 인류에게 희망을 전하고 회복시키며 건설하는 사람들이 되라는 부르심을 받는다.

“주님께 바라는 이들은 새 힘을 얻고 독수리처럼 날개 치며 올라간다. 그들은 뛰어도 지칠 줄 모르고 걸어도 피곤한 줄 모른다.” (이사야 40,31) 거룩한 선교사가 되셨다. 우리 또한 우리의 희망이신 예수 그리스도의 발자취를 따라 불행한 인류에게 희망을 전하고 회복시키며 건설하는 사람들이 되라는 부르심을 받는다.
