WYD kick-off ceremony in Andong 세계청년대회 안동교구 발대식

In preparation for the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day (WYD), the kick-off ceremony and Youth Festival for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Andong was held near the Andong Mask Dance Performance Hall on Oct.12, under the theme, “Take courage. I have conquered the world.” (John 16:33).

Following the first World Youth Day held in Rome in 1986, the 2027 Seoul WYD marks the 41st WYD. Seoul WYD is the second to be held in Asia, following the 1995 Manila WYD in the Philippines, making it a truly meaningful event for Koreans.

Nowadays, young people live amidst various conflicts and struggles. Many young people struggle with challenges such as an intense, competitive academic environment, uncertain employment prospects, economic hardships and increasing mental health issues like suicide.

Recognizing this reality, the Pope invites young people from around the world to a specific region every four years to engage in a truly special encounter and to inspire life-changing experiences. It is hoped that young people, the leaders of future generations, will rediscover their faith through WYD events.

WYD hopes that young people will experience the joy and the unconditional love of living as pilgrims of hope who put the Good News of the Gospels into practice in their daily lives. It is hoped that this will become an opportunity for our Church to become more youthful, vibrant and growing.

The WYD main conference will be held in each of the 15 dioceses in Korea from July 29 to Aug. 2, 2027, and the main conference in Seoul will be held from Aug. 3 to 8.

For the Andong kick-off ceremony, approximately 600 people participated, including Sunday school students, youth and local residents. The first part of the event was a youth festival featuring diverse cultural experiences, booths and performances. The second part featured the ceremony and Mass, followed by a performance by PAX, the Catholic Life Hymn Apostles.

During Mass, young people offered a transparent acrylic cross filled with yellow prayer papers for God, each with their hopes and dreams. Through the Mass, held with the relics of Saint Carlo Acutis, we prayed that all young people will follow his example and live an earnest life of faith.

The Diocese of Andong is divided into six regions (Bukbu, Donghae, Sangju, Mungyeong, Uiseong and Andong), and the relics of Saint Acutis, the “first millennial saint,” will tour each region for three months, starting Oct. 19.

As part of the youth festival programs, the Pauline sisters held a Carlo Acutis quiz contest from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and approximately 130 youth and young adults participated.

The life of Carlo Acutis, who passed away in 2006 at the age of 15, was truly marvelous. We pray that the youth will deepen their devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the Virgin Mary. We hope that the seeds of vocation will grow through the intercession of Saint Carlo Acutis.

Our encounters were a moment of experiencing the grace-filled hands of God’s providence.

세계청년대회 안동교구 발대식 WYD kick-off ceremony in Andong

2027 서울 세계청년대회(WYD: World Youth Day)를 향한 안동교구대회 발대식과 청소년 축제가 10월 12일, “용기를 내어라. 내가 세상을 이겼다”(요한 16.33)라는 주제로 안동 탈춤공연장 일대에서 개최되었다.

1986년 로마에서 열린 제1차 세계청년대회에 이어 2027년 서울에서 개최되는 WYD는 어느덧 41차를 맞이한다. 1995년 필리핀 마닐라에서 열린 세계청년대회에 이어 아시아에서는 두 번째로 펼쳐지는 세계청년대회라서 한국인으로서 무척 뜻깊은 행사다.

오늘날 젊은이들은 여러 갈등과 고민 속에 휩싸여 살아간다. 경쟁적이고 치열한 학업 분위기, 불안한 취업 전망, 경제적 어려움, 자살과 같이 갈수록 늘어나는 정신 건강의 위기 등 다양한 도전에 직면하여 고군분투하는 젊은이들이 참 많다.

이처럼 젊은이들이 직면한 현실을 인식한 교황은 4년마다 세계 젊은이들을 특정 지역으로 초대하여 매우 특별한 만남을 갖고 인생을 뒤바꾸는 체험을 하도록 영감을 불러일으킨다. 세계청년대회를 통해 미래 세대의 주역인 젊은이들이 신앙의 열정을 되찾기를 간절히 소망하기 때문이다.

세계청년대회를 통해 젊은이들이 복음의 기쁜 소식을 그들의 일상 가운데 실천하는 희망의 순례자로 살아가는 기쁨과 조건 없는 사랑을 체험하기를 소망한다. 또한 이러한 만남을 통해 우리 교회가 한층 젊어지고 활기차며 성장하는 계기가 되기를 바란다.

한국의 각 교구(모두 15개)에서 열리는 WYD 본대회는 2027년 7월 29일부터 8월 2일까지 열리고, 서울에서 열리는 본대회는 8월 3일부터 8월 8일까지 진행된다.

이번 안동교구 발대식에는 주일학교 초중고 학생과 청년, 지역 주민 등 600여 명이 참가했다. 제1부는 청소년 축제 마당으로 다채로운 문화 체험과 놀이 코너(부스)가 마련되었고, 제2부에서는 발대식과 발대미사에 이어 가톨릭 생활성가 찬양사도단 PAX의 콘서트가 펼쳐졌다.

젊은이들은 하느님께 바라는 희망과 꿈을 적은 노란 기도 종이로 채워진 투명 아크릴 십자가를 미사 때 봉헌했다. 카를로 아쿠티스 성인의 유해를 모시고 드린 발대식 미사에서 우리는 모든 젊은이가 아쿠티스 성인의 귀감을 따라 한층 진지한 신앙생활을 하기를 기도했다.

안동교구는 북부, 동해, 상주, 문경, 의성, 안동 등 모두 6개 지구로 나누어져 있는데, 최초의 밀레니얼 성인인 아쿠티스 성인 유해는 10월 19일부터 3개월씩 각 지구를 순회한다.

청소년 축제 프로그램 가운데 바오로딸 수녀들은 오전 10시부터 12시 30분까지 카를로 아쿠티스 퀴즈대회를 진행했는데, 모두 130여 명의 청소년과 청년들이 참여했다.

2006년, 15살에 선종한 카를로 아쿠티스의 삶은 참으로 놀랍기만 하다. 청소년과 청년들 안에 성체 신심과 성모 신심이 깊어지길 기도하며 카를로 아쿠티스 성인의 전구로 성소의 씨앗이 자라나길 희망한다.

우리의 만남은 참으로 은혜로운 하느님 섭리의 손길을 체험하는 순간이었다.

카를로 아쿠티스 퀴즈대회를 위해 퀴즈 선물을 마련하도록 호의를 갖고 관대하게 협력해 주신 많은 분께 마음 깊이 감사드린다.

Many faces 다양한 얼굴

“A Cultural Dance that Unites the World” was the theme of the 29th Andong International Maskdance Festival 2025, held from Sept. 26 to Oct. 5 at Jungang Line 1942 Andong Station and Talchum (traditional mask dance) Park.

Another slogan is “Dancing Mask, Finding Various Faces.” This slogan reminds me of various hidden faces in our lives, identities and personalities. Various masks have always reflected the joys and sorrows of humanity beyond time and culture across the countries in the world.

As a representative Korean cultural festival, this annual event is hosted and organized by the Korean Foundation for Cultures and Ethics. It is also supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, as well as the Korean Heritage Service.

Dance teams from 26 countries from across six continents are participating this year. Seventeen of them are Korean and 29 teams are international. With various programs for performance, competition, participation, exhibition, personal experiences and special food experiences, Andong International Maskdance Festival has maintained its top position among more than 1,500 festivals held in Korea every year.

This year, Italy has been chosen as the festival's highlight country, marking the 141st anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Italy.

A mask is more than just a cover for the face. It is not only a symbol that captures and inspires universal human emotions such as joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure, but also a cultural expression that transforms social or political pressures and the struggles of daily life into smiles, humor, satire, hope, dreams and freedom.

The power of masks is the ability to hide one’s own face, take on another and create new stories. The many faces of masks inspire us to discover another side of ourselves. Thus, the many faces represent the limitless world of expressions and the diverse identities of people.

With many faces, we can laugh, celebrate and learn to understand our differences. We can be simple and free enough to enliven the inclusiveness of the community. Above all, masks create a sense of harmony, compassion, empathy and cultural exchange with the world.

Each of us has so many faces, personalities and identities, and these varieties empower society and the country.

“Many faces” reminds me of a well-known song titled “Thorn tree.”

“There are so many of me inside of me that there is no place for you to rest. With vain wishes in me, there is no place for you to rest. Inside of me is the darkness that I can’t help but take your place to rest. Inside me is a sadness that I can't overcome. It is like a lush thorn forest. When the wind blows, the dry branches cling to each other and cry. Even the young birds that flew away exhausted in search of shelter are pierced by thorns and fly away. When the wind blows, it is so lonely and painful that there are many days to sing sad songs ...”

Emilia Gatto, the Italian ambassador to Korea, shared her greetings: “Andong is often called the most Korean place in Korea. Here, tradition meets daily life with strength and vitality. … I sincerely hope this festival will become a place where tradition strengthens creativity and energy in the city.”

다양한 얼굴 Many faces

“세계를 하나로 만드는 문화의 춤”은 지난 9월 26일부터 10월 5일까지 중앙선 1942 안동역과 탈춤 공원에서 열린 스물아홉 번째 안동 국제 탈춤 페스티벌의 주제다.

이번 축제의 또 다른 슬로건은 “춤추는 탈, 다양한 얼굴을 찾아서”이다. 이 표어는 우리 삶 가운데 숨겨진 여러 가지 얼굴과 정체성과 품성을 떠올린다. 다양한 탈은 시간과 문화를 넘어 세계 곳곳에서 살아가는 인류의 기쁨과 슬픔을 반영해 왔다.

한국을 대표하는 문화 축제인 탈춤 페스티벌은 문화체육관광부와 국가유산청의 후원 아래 한국정신문화재단이 주최한다.

올해는 여섯 개 대륙의 26개 나라에서 파견된 탈춤 팀이 참여했다. 그 가운데 17개 팀이 한국인이고, 29개 팀은 해외 단체다. 안동 국제 탈춤 축제는 공연과 경연, 참여와 전시 등 다양한 프로그램을 비롯해, 개인 체험과 특별 음식 체험 프로그램을 통해 해마다 한국에서 열리는 1,500여 개의 축제 가운데 최고의 자리를 지켜왔다.

올해는 한국과 이탈리아의 수교 141주년을 맞아 이탈리아가 주빈국으로 선정되었다.

탈은 단순한 가면을 넘어 기쁨과 분노, 슬픔과 즐거움처럼 보편적인 인간의 감정을 담아내어 영감을 주는 상징일 뿐 아니라, 사회적이거나 정치적인 억압과 일상생활의 고단함을 웃음과 유머, 풍자와 희망, 꿈과 자유로 승화시켜온 문화적 표현이기도 하다.

탈의 힘은 자신의 본래 얼굴을 감춘 채 다른 모습의 가면을 쓰고 새로운 이야기를 엮어낼 수 있는 능력이다. 탈의 다양한 얼굴은 우리 자신이 지닌 또 다른 면을 발견하도록 영감을 불러일으킨다. 따라서 다양한 얼굴은 무한한 표현의 세계와 사람들의 다양한 정체성을 드러낸다.

다양한 얼굴을 통해 우리는 함께 웃고 기뻐하며 서로의 다름을 이해하는 법을 배울 수 있다. 그리하여 우리는 단순하고 자유로운 모습으로 공동체의 포용력에 활력을 불어넣을 수 있다. 무엇보다 탈은 조화로움과 연민과 공감, 세상과 나누는 문화적 교류를 자아낸다.

우리는 저마다 수많은 얼굴과 품성과 정체성을 지니며, 이러한 다양성은 사회와 국가에 힘을 실어준다.

“다양한 얼굴”은 널리 알려진 “가시나무”라는 노래를 떠올린다.

“내 속엔 내가 너무도 많아 당신의 쉴 곳 없네. 내 속엔 헛된 바램들로 당신의 편할 곳 없네. 내 속엔 내가 어쩔 수 없는 어둠, 당신의 쉴 자리를 뺏고, 내 속엔 내가 이길 수 없는 슬픔, 무성한 가시나무 숲 같네. 바람만 불면 그 메마른 가지 서로 부대끼며 울어대고 쉴 곳을 찾아 지쳐 날아온 어린 새들도 가시에 찔려 날아가고. 바람만 불면 외롭고 또 괴로워 슬픈 노래를 부르던 날이 많았는데…”

에밀리아 가토 주한 이탈리아 대사는 인사말에서 이렇게 전한다. “안동은 흔히 한국 가운데 가장 한국다운 곳으로 불립니다. 안동에는 전통이 일상과 만나 자아내는 힘과 활력이 있습니다. … 이 축제가 전통이 도시의 창의와 활력을 키우는 거점이 되기를 진심으로 바랍니다.”
