Pauline Stamp Tour 바오로딸 스탬프 투어

Here and there, the Stamp (Passport) Tour is encouraged to promote various events. Some people enjoy collecting stamps (seals) with special images or logos that are related to the designated places whenever they visit holy places, historical sites, museums or attractions.

The passport is the paper on which the stamp is made to certify the visit. Well-known stamp tours include the Lighthouse Stamp Tour, Starbucks Stamp Tour, National Bicycle Path and Gyeongju History and Culture Stamp Tour.

Along with the stamp trend, the Pauline planning team recently introduced an interesting program called “Visit Pauline bookshops while you are out: Pauline Stamp Tour.” It is being held from April 5 to Oct. 31 this year.

Pauline Stamp Tour was planned with the hope of making an encouraging time to add a little but blessed happiness by peacefully stopping by Pauline bookshops across the country while traveling with family, friends or partners.

We hope that Pauline bookshops will become a resting place where you can put your complicated thoughts aside for some moments and take a spiritual walk in peace.

The Daughters of Saint Paul, founded in Alba, Italy, in 1915 and advanced to Korea in 1960, currently runs 15 Pauline bookshops across the country. There are three Pauline bookshops in Seoul (Myeongdong Catholic Center, Hyehwanamu and Alberione Center), and the other 12 bookshops are located in Uijeongbu, Ilsan, Incheon, Suwon, Bundang, Wonju, Daejeon, Jeonju, Andong, Gwangju, Daegu and Busan.

Serving people at Pauline bookshops, we hope to proclaim the good news of the Gospels to everyone and to become a place of light for those who are seeking the truth.

If you visit all the Pauline bookshops and fill the stamp card with various stamps that represent each bookshop, a meaningful gift waits for you.

If the related bookshop is your first visit, you will receive a stamp card, a 2026 calendar cover and a single sheet of the calendar for the specific bookshop.

If you have already received the stamp card, that is, if you have stamped more than one stamp, you will only receive a sheet of the calendar for the related bookshop. If you have three, six or nine stamps from different dioceses, you will receive the Pauline gift certificate as a bonus.

If you collect more than 10 stamps, you can attend Christmas Eve Mass at our Congregation in 2025 through a raffle. If you post 10 or more reviews or register a review link, three participants will be chosen to have the Convent Book Stay from Oct. 25 to 26.

Vitalizing the local (regional) activity, the stamp tour creates a synergy effect. Compared with other Pauline bookshops located in large cities, our bookshop in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, has a smaller scale, but nowadays unexpected visitors come to the bookshop to participate Stamp Tour.

Such presence is created by the synergy effect which helps us to be more considerate of others and thus to cooperate. “Synergize” is one of the seven habits of highly effective people in “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” written by Stephen Covey (1932-2012).

바오로딸 스탬프 투어 Pauline Stamp Tour 곳곳에서 다양한 행사를 홍보하기 위해 스탬프 투어를 권한다. 어떤 사람들은 성지나 역사 유적지, 박물관이나 관광 명소를 방문할 때마다 지정된 장소와 관련된 특별한 이미지나 로고가 새긴 스탬프를 즐겨 모은다.

스탬프 투어 여권은 방문을 증명하는 스탬프를 찍는 종이다. 널리 알려진 스탬프 투어 가운데는 등대 스탬프 투어, 스타벅스 스탬프 투어, 아름다운 자전거 여행길, 경주 역사문화탐방 스탬프 투어 등이 있다.

이러한 스탬프 투어 열풍에 발맞춘 바오로딸 기획팀은 최근 "놀러간 김에 바오로딸: 바오로딸 스탬프 투어"라는 흥미진진한 프로그램을 선보였다. 바오로딸 스탬프 투어는 올해 4월 5일에 시작하여 10월 31일까지 이어진다.

바오로딸 스탬프 투어는 사람들이 가족이나 친구, 또는 연인과 함께 여행 간 곳에 있는 바오로딸 서점에 흔쾌히 들러 작지만 은혜로운 행복감을 얻고 힘과 용기를 자아내는 시간을 보내기를 바라는 마음으로 기획되었다.

바오로딸 서점이 복잡한 마음을 잠시 내려놓고 영적으로 산책하듯 쉬었다 가는 쉼터가 되기를 바란다.

1915년 이탈리아 알바에서 창립되어 1960년 한국에 진출한 성바오로딸수도회는 현재 전국에 자리잡은 15개의 바오로딸 서점을 운영하고 있다. 서울에는 명동 가톨릭센터, 혜화나무, 알베리오네센터 등 3곳에 바오로딸 서점이 있고, 나머지 12곳은 의정부, 일산, 인천, 수원, 분당, 원주, 대전, 전주, 안동, 광주, 대구, 부산에 있다.

바오로딸 서점에서 봉사하는 우리는 모든 이에게 복음의 기쁜 소식을 전하며 진리를 찾는 이들에게 빛의 터전이 되기를 바란다.

모든 바오로딸 서점을 방문하여 각 서점을 상징하는 스탬프를 카드에 찍어 모으면 의미 있는 선물이 기다린다.

해당 서점이 첫 번째 방문지라면 스탬프 카드, 2026년 달력 표지, 그리고 해당 서점의 달력 한 장을 받는다.

스탬프 카드를 이미 받았다면, 다시 말해 스탬프를 1개 이상 찍은 경우에는 해당 서점의 달력 한 장만 받는다. 교구가 다른 스탬프를 3개, 6개, 또는 9개 찍을 경우 보너스로 바오로딸 상품권을 받는다.

스탬프를 10개 이상 찍으면 추첨을 통해 2025년 수녀원 성탄 밤 미사에 참석할 수 있다. 방문 후기를 10개 이상 올리거나 리뷰 링크를 등록하면 3명을 선정하여 10월 25일부터 26일까지 수녀원 북스테이를 할 수 있다.

스탬프 투어는 시너지 효과를 자아내어 지역 활동에 활력을 불어넣는다. 대도시에 위치한 바오로딸 서점들에 비해 경북 안동에 자리한 바오로딸 서점은 규모가 무척 작지만, 최근 예상치 않은 손님들이 스탬프 투어에 참여하려고 찾아온다.

이처럼 시너지 효과를 불러일으키는 참여는 서로 더 배려하며 협력하게 한다. "시너지를 내라”는 것은 스티븐 코비(1932-2012)가 쓴 "성공하는 사람들의 7가지 습관"에 나오는 습관 가운데 하나다.

"너희 가운데 두 사람이 이 땅에서 마음을 모아 무엇이든 청하면, 하늘에 계신 내 아버지께서 일어 주실 것이다. 두 사람이나 세 사람이라도 내 이름으로 모인 곳에는 나도 함께 있기 때문이다." (마태오 18,19-20)

In memory of Pope Francis (1936-2025) 프란치스코 교황을 기리며

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died at the age of 88 at 7:35 a.m. on Monday, just one day after Easter Sunday. I learned the news of his passing after I came back from an Easter picnic.

Pope Francis was the first pope from Latin America, the first pope from the Jesuits and the first pope who chose the name “Francis.” As this name suggests, he was simple, frugal, free, holistic and integrated.

In short, Pope Francis was a spokesman for the poor and the alienated. He broke down barriers with openness. He did his best to approach all kinds of people beyond denominations and differences.

Since his election as the 266th pope on March 13, 2013, he has traveled to 67 countries on five continents, wrote four Encyclicals (Lumen Fidei, Laudato Si, Fratelli Tutti and Dilexit Nos) and seven Apostolic Exhortations.

Everybody will agree with his reputation as a pope with an open-minded perspective who led a simple and frugal life.

In August 2014, Pope Francis visited South Korea for the first time since John Paul II in 1989. I was at that time sent as a missionary to Singapore, but Koreans fully embraced the pope, whose humility and love engulfed them.

In 2016 and 2017, I had opportunities to attend the Papal Audience and Mass in St. Peter’s Square. At that time, I saw Pope Francis from afar, but his recommendation for us to go to the frontier has always lingered in my heart.

One day, during my stay in Rome, Sr. Innocencia registered for those who participated in the Pauline Charism Course the Pope’s blessing letter regarding the extraordinary year of mercy in 2016. Another blessing card was given on behalf of the 25th anniversary of my religious profession.

That is my memory of Pope Francis. His dynamic invitation to go to the frontier lets me be alive, creative, inspiring and positive. He should be remembered as an ongoing pilgrim, always moving forward.

Kim Hyeon-Jeong wrote about Pope Francis in “Even Speaking Requires Practice,” published in 2021.

Saying that the leader’s way of talking respects others, makes others comfortable with an open mind and is impartial, she quotes Pope Francis’ saying that the role and mission of the church is “to heal and console the wounds of those involved in divorce and abortion.” She also cites the pope's saying to the atheists: “There is no limits to God’s mercy. Even if you do not believe in God, you can still follow the conscience.”

While taking Pope Francis as a good example of a persuasive and inspiring leader, she analyzes his tone of speech as gentle and soft, simple but profound. “He is not being bound by formality; he does not list abstract words; he explains catechism in words that anyone can easily understand. He is also free from the dichotomous distinction and perspective of good and bad, the good and the evil. He is not biased. He always respects and embraces others.”

Pope Francis’ last homily on Easter Sunday let us be alive and constantly on the move:

“Mary Magdalene… ran to tell Peter and John…The two disciples also … ran together … The main figures of the Easter narratives all ran! … The haste of Mary Magdalene, Peter, and John expresses the desire, the yearning of the heart, inner attitude of those who set out to search for Jesus.”

"We must look for him and this is why we cannot remain stationary. We must take action and set out to look for him: look for him in life, look for him in the faces of our brothers and sisters, look for him in everyday business, and look for him everywhere except in the tomb."

"He is present everywhere, he dwells among us, he hides himself and reveals himself even today in the sisters and brothers we meet along the way, in the most ordinary and unpredictable situations of our lives. He is alive and is with us always, shedding the tears of those who suffer and adding to the beauty of life through the small acts of love carried out by each of us."

"Easter spurs us to action, to run like Mary Magdalene and the disciples; it invites us to have eyes that can 'see beyond,' to perceive Jesus, the one who lives, as the God who reveals himself and makes himself present even today, who speaks to us, goes before us, surprises us. Like Mary Magdalene, every day we can experience losing the Lord, but every day we can also run to look for him again, with the certainty that he will allow himself to be found and will fill us with the light of his resurrection.”

프란치스코 교황을 기리며 In memory of Pope Francis

호르헤 마리오 베르골료라는 이름으로 태어난 프란치스코 교황은 부활절 다음 날인 월요일 오전 7시 35분, 향년 88세의 나이에 선종하셨다. 부활절 소풍을 마치고 돌아왔을 때 교황님이 돌아가셨다는 소식을 전해들었다.

프란치스코 교황은 최초의 라틴 아메리카 출신 교황이자 최초의 예수회 출신 교황이었고, "프란치스코"라는 이름을 처음으로 선택한 교황이었다. 프란치스코라는 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 교황님은 소박하고 검소하고 자유롭고 전인적이며 통합적인 분이셨다.

간단히 말해, 프란치스코 교황은 가난한 사람들과 소외받는 사람들의 대변인이었다. 프란치스코 교황은 열린 마음으로 장벽을 무너뜨렸다. 교파와 차이를 넘어 모든 이에게 다가가려고 최선을 다했다.

2013년 3월 13일, 제266대 교황으로 선출된 이래 프란치스코 교황은 다섯 개 대륙에 펼쳐진 67개의 나라를 방문했고, 네 권의 회칙(「신앙의 빛」Lumen Fidei, 「찬미받으소서」Laudato Si, 「모든 형제들」Fratelli Tutti, 「그리스도께서 우리를 사랑하셨습니다」Dilexit Nos)과 일곱 권의 사도적 권고를 펴냈다.

열린 시각을 지닌 교황으로서 단순하고 소탈하게 살아온 그의 명성에 누구나 공감할 것이다.

2014년 8월, 프란치스코 교황은 1989년 요한 바오로 2세의 한국 방문 이후 처음으로 한국을 방문했다. 당시 나는 선교사로서 싱가포르에 파견되었는데, 우리나라 국민들은 교황님을 진심으로 환영했으며 교황님의 겸손과 사랑에 깊은 감동을 받았다.

2016년과 2017년에 성 베드로 광장에서 펼쳐진 교황 알현과 미사에 참례할 여러 기회가 있었다. 그때 나는 멀리서 프란치스코 교황님을 뵈었지만, 변방을 찾아가라는 교황님의 권고는 언제나 내 마음속에 메아리 치고 있다.

로마에 머무는 동안, 어느 날, 인노첸시아 수녀님이 바오로 카리스마 코스 참가자들을 위해 2016년 특별 자비의 해에 대한 교황님의 축복장을 마련해 주었다. 수도 서원 25주년을 기념하는 또 다른 축복 카드도 받았다.

이것이 내가 기억하는 프란치스코 교황님과의 만남이다. 변방으로 나아가라는 교황님의 역동적인 초대는 나를 활기차게 하고 창의적이며 긍정적이게 하며 영감을 준다. 교황님은 늘 한결같이 앞으로 나아가는 순례자로 기억되리라.

김현정 님은 2021년에 출간된 「말투에도 연습이 필요합니다」라는 책에서 프란치스코 교황에 대해 언급했다.

리더(지도자)의 말투는 상대를 존중하고 열린 마음으로 편안하게 하며, 한쪽으로 치우쳐 말하지 않는다고 정의 내린 저자는 "이혼과 낙태 관련자의 상처를 치유하고 위로하는 것"이 바로 교회의 역할이요 사명이라는 교황님 말씀을 인용했다. 저자는 또한 "하느님의 자비에는 한계가 없습니다. 하느님을 믿지 않아도 양심을 따르면 됩니다" 하고 무신론자들에게 건넨 교황님 말씀을 인용했다.

프란치스코 교황을 설득력 있고 영감을 주는 지도자의 좋은 본보기로 제시한 저자는 교황님의 어투는 온화하고 부드럽고, 소탈하며 깊이가 있다고 분석한다. "교황님은 격식에 얽매이지 않고, 추상적 어휘를 나열하지 않으며, 누구나 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 말로 교리를 이야기하며, 좋은 것과 나쁜 것, 선과 악으로 나누는 이분법적 구별과 시각에서도 벗어나 있다. 치우침이 없고 상대를 존중하며 포용한다."

프란치스코 교황이 부활절에 건넨 마지막 강론 말씀은 우리를 살아 있게 하며 끊임없이 앞으로 나아가게 한다.

"마리아 막달레나는… 베드로와 요한에게 달려가 알렸습니다… 두 제자도… 함께 달려갔습니다… 부활의 이야기에서 등장하는 주요 인물들은 모두 달리고 있습니다! …마리아 막달레나, 베드로, 요한의 서두름은 마음의 갈망, 곧 예수님을 찾고자 하는 내면의 태도를 드러냅니다.”

"우리는 그분을 찾아야 합니다. 그렇기에 우리는 가만히 머물러 있을 수 없습니다. 행동해야 합니다. 일어나서 그분을 찾아야 합니다. 삶 속에서, 우리 이웃의 얼굴 속에서, 일상적인 일 속에서, 무덤이 아닌 모든 곳에서 그분을 찾아야 합니다."

"그분은 어디에나 현존하시며, 우리 가운데 거하시고, 우리가 만나는 형제 자매들과의 길 위에서, 일상의 평범하고도 뜻밖의 순간들 속에서 당신 자신을 감추시기도 하고 드러내시기도 하시기 때문입니다. 그분은 살아 계시며 항상 우리와 함께 계십니다. 고통받는 이들의 눈물을 통해 함께하시고, 우리 각자가 행하는 작은 사랑의 실천을 통해 삶을 아름답게 하십니다.”

"부활은 우리를 행동하게 합니다. 막달레나와 제자들처럼 달려가도록 우리를 재촉합니다. 그 너머를 볼 수 있는 눈을 가지도록 우리를 초대합니다. 살아 계신 예수님, 오늘도 우리에게 말씀하시고, 우리보다 앞서 가시며, 우리를 놀라게 하시는 하느님을 바라보도록 말입니다. 마리아 막달레나처럼 우리는 매일 주님을 잃는 듯한 경험을 할 수도 있지만, 매일 다시 그분을 찾아 달려갈 수도 있습니다. 그분께서는 반드시 당신을 찾는 이들에게 당신을 발견하게 해주실 것이며, 당신 부활의 빛으로 우리를 가득 채워 주실 것입니다."

Just as we are 있는 그대로 --In memory of Bishop Rene Dupont (1929-2025)

“Sing to the Lord, praise the Lord, for he has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the evildoers.” (Jeremiah 20:13)

The godfather of the sociably disadvantaged, Bishop Dubong (Rene Dupont) died at the age of 96 at 7:47 p.m. on Thursday.

He wholeheartedly dedicated his life and energy to sharing the joy of the Gospels with those around him, without discrimination. He hoped for the church to work for the weak and the alienated.

He sincerely believed that the church's mission is to be concerned about those who are having difficulties in life, to empower them and to give them hope.

I believe he was ready to face his final moments in peace, letting go when a cerebral infarction struck a few days ago.

He was blessed to go to the heavens just before the Lord’s Passion Sunday without much suffering.

If I had to choose the words to capture his life, they would be "joyfully with dignity" and "simply with gratitude." I could see his cheerful spirit whenever I listened to his talks on YouTube. His last words to the priests of the Diocese of Andong were thank you.

One day, after confession, I expressed to him my earnest longing to correct and improve myself.

Looking at me intently with large, clear eyes, he said, “Don’t make too much effort to correct yourself. Just accept yourself as you are. Be yourself. Our fundamental temperament cannot be changed.”

After reflecting on the virtue of being as I am as he inspired me, I wrote the following poem on acceptance:

Do not try hard

To correct the self.

Accepting yourself as you are

Let it flow like the water.

Do not try hard

To press on the self.

As the earth embraces everything

Let it go like the rain.

We were supposed to visit Bishop Dubong for confession once a month, but the wildfires in March prevented us.

We wish we could flow freely like the spring water. We wish we could let it go like the rain. However, in our life, flowing like water is not easy. Letting it go like the rain takes much time and patience, for we have shadow and inner resistance. We need help and guidance.

I used to believe that, given enough time, we could all change and be transformed into someone new. But some argue that our personalities are governed by the law of immutability. It made me wonder if we can ever really change. Perhaps certain features or aspects of our character cannot be changed, no matter how hard we try. And when we try to force change, our stubborn traits might not bend, but break.

Therefore, as Bishop Dubong advised, the best way to be at peace with the self would be simply “beginning again and again, day by day.”

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Leviticus 19:18; Mark 12:31)

“Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also everyone for those of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)

있는 그대로 Just as you are --두봉 주교님(1929-2025)을 기리며

"주님께 노래 불러라! 주님을 찬양하여라! 그분께서 가난한 이들의 목숨을 악인들의 손에서 건지셨다." (예레미야 20,13)

사회적으로 버림받은 이들의 대부였던 두봉 주교님(르네 듀퐁)이 목요일(4월 10일) 오후 7시 47분, 96세에 선종했다.

주교님은 자신의 생명을 바치고 온 힘을 다해 그 누구도 차별하지 않고 복음의 기쁨을 나누었다. 우리 교회가 약하고 소외된 이들을 위해 일하기를 희망했다.

교회의 사명은 삶 가운데 어려움을 겪는 이들에게 관심을 갖고 힘과 희망을 주는 것이라고 주교님은 진심으로 믿었다.

며칠 전 주교님이 뇌경색으로 쓰러졌을 때 자신을 내려놓고 평온하게 마지막 순간을 맞이할 준비가 되어 있었다고 나는 생각한다.

주교님은 주님 수난 주일 전에 큰 고통을 받지 않고 하늘나라로 가는 축복을 받았다.

주교님의 삶을 담아낼 수 있는 단어를 고르라면 "기쁘고 떳떳하게"와 "감사하며 단순하게"이리라. 유튜브에 올라온 주교님 말씀을 들을 때마다 나는 주교님의 밝은 기운을 느낀다. 안동교구 사제들에게 마지막으로 건넨 말씀은 고맙다는 것이었다.

어느 날, 고해성사를 마친 나는 주교님께 나 자신을 고치고 싶다는 간절한 마음을 표현했다.

주교님은 크고 맑은 눈길로 나를 찬찬히 바라보며 말씀하셨다. "자신을 고치려고 너무 애쓰지 말아요. 있는 그대로 받아들이세요. 있는 그대로 사세요. 우리의 근본적 기질은 바꿀 수 없어요."

주교님한테서 영감을 받아 있는 그대로 나 자신이 되는 미덕을 되새기며 받아들임에 대한 시를 썼다.

그냥 있는 그대로 받아들여

물처럼 흘러, 흘러가요

자신을 너무

다그치지 말아요

땅이 모든 걸 품어 안듯

비처럼 내려, 내려 놓아요

한 달에 한 번 두봉 주교님을 찾아 고해성사를 드리기로 했는데 3월에 일어난 산불로 가지 못했다.

우리는 샘물처럼 자유로이 흘러가길 소망한다. 비처럼 흘러 내려가기를 바라지만 우리 삶 가운데 물처럼 흘러가는 것은 그다지 쉽지 않다. 비처럼 내려놓으며 아래로 흘러가려면 많은 시간과 인내가 필요하다. 그림자와 내적 저항력이 있기 때문이다. 우리에게는 도움과 지도가 필요하다.

충분한 시간이 주어진다면 우리 모두 변화되어 새로운 사람으로 거듭 날 수 있다고 믿는데 어떤 이들은 우리 성격이 원판 불변의 법칙을 따른다고 주장한다. 그 말을 들으니 우리가 정말 변화될 수 없는지 의문이 든다. 사실 우리 성격이 지닌 어떤 특징이나 모습은 우리가 아무리 노력해도 바꿀 수 없을지 모른다. 너무 애써 변화되려고 하면 우리의 완고한 기질이 휘어지지 않고 오히려 꺾일지도 모른다.

두봉 주교님이 조언하신 것처럼 자신을 평온하게 받아들이는 가장 좋은 방법은 단순히 "날마다 거듭 새롭게 시작하는 것"이리라.

"네 이웃을 너 자신처럼 사랑해야 한다." (레위기 19,18; 마르코 12,31)

“무슨 일이든 이기심이나 허영심으로 하지 마십시오. 오히려 겸손한 마음으로 서로 남을 자기보다 낫게 여기십시오. 저마다 자기 것만 돌보지 않고 남의 것도 돌보아 주십시오.” (필리피 2,3-4)

Hoping against hope 희망이 없어도 희망하기

In the face of natural disasters such as wildfires or earthquakes, human efforts can feel like a drop in the bucket. We desperately wait for rain and earnestly look for donations.

In these situations, the words of God always encourage us to “hope against hope.” (Romans 4:18)

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is God from of old, creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary and his knowledge is beyond scrutiny. He gives power to the faint, abundant strength to the weak. Though young men faint and grow weary and youths stagger and fall, they that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on eagles’ wings; They will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint.” (Isaiah 40:28-31)

Two Pope Francis autobiographies have recently been translated into Korean. One is “Spera” (Hope) written by Pope Francis with his editor and co-author Carlo Musso, and the other is “Life: La mia Storia nella Storia” written by Pope Francis with Fabio Marchese Ragona.

Pope Francis was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Dec. 17, 1936, as the first son of Italian migrants. As a chemical technician, he studied philosophy and was ordained a priest in 1969 before joining the Jesuits in 1973. He was named auxiliary bishop in 1992, archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and cardinal in 2001. On March 13, 2013, he became the 266th pope of the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis thought of publishing his autobiography, “Spera,” after his death, but he changed his mind to present it now during the Jubilee Year of Hope. Filled with stories of hope, “Spera” gives us meaningful directions and vision on how to live as pilgrims of hope.

“Spera” starts from the early years of the 20th century, introducing the Italian roots that reveal his ancestors’ courageous migration to Latin America. It goes on to talk about his childhood, the enthusiasms and preoccupations of his youth, his vocation to priesthood, pastoral activities and the crucial moments of his papacy.

Most candidly and prophetically, “Spera” recalls his memories in an intimate narrative tone. It is not only about his personal life but also about war and peace, migration, environmental crisis, social policy, the position of women, sexuality, technological developments and the future of the Church.

He believes that his autobiography is “a pilgrim’s bundle” that contains various stories about the journey of hope. It shares with us not only about what happened in the past but also about the future to come.

Pope Francis says that hope is “the virtue of movement and the engine of change.” Hope is “the tension that brings together memory and utopia to truly build the dreams that await us. And if a dream fades, we need to go back and dream it again, in new forms, drawing with hope from the embers of memory. We Christians must know that hope doesn’t deceive and doesn’t disappoint: All is born to blossom in an eternal springtime. In the end, we will say only: I don’t recall anything in which You are not there.”

Hope is truly the engine of change. Hope lets us survive against ups and downs. Hope inspires us to undergo the winding journey toward various forms of transformation. Hope empowers us to go on and on.

희망이 없어도 희망하기 Hoping against hope

산불이나 지진 같은 자연 재해 앞에서 인간의 노력은 새 발의 피처럼 느껴질 수 있다. 그래서 우리는 간절한 마음으로 비를 기다리며 도움을 찾아 나선다.

이처럼 처절한 상황 가운데 하느님 말씀은 언제나 "희망이 없어도 희망하기"(로마 4,18)를 독려한다.

"너는 알지 않느냐? 너는 듣지 않았느냐? 주님은 영원하신 하느님, 땅끝까지 창조하신 분이시다. 그분께서는 피곤한 줄도 지칠 줄도 모르시고 그분의 슬기는 헤아릴 길이 없다. 그분께서는 피곤한 이에게 힘을 주시고 기운이 없는 이에게 기력을 북돋아 주신다. 젊은이들도 피곤하여 지치고 청년들도 비틀거리기 마련이지만 주님께 바라는 이들은 새 힘을 얻고 독수리처럼 날개 치며 올라간다. 그들은 뛰어도 지칠 줄 모르고 걸어도 피곤한 줄 모른다."(이사야 40,28-31)

프란치스코 교황이 쓴 두 권의 자서전이 최근 우리말로 번역되었다. 하나는 프란치스코 교황이 편집인이면서 공동 저자이기도 한 카를로 무쏘와 함께 쓴 "희망”(Spera)이고, 또 다른 책은 프란치스코 교황이 파비오 마르케세 라고나와 함께 쓴 "나의 인생”(Life: La mia Storia nella Storia"이다.

프란치스코 교황은 1936년 12월 17일 이탈리아 이주민의 장남으로 아르헨티나 부에노스아이레스에서 태어났다. 화학 기술자로서 그는 철학을 공부한 다음 1969년에 사제품을 받았으며 1973년 예수회에 들어갔다. 1992년 보좌주교가 되었고, 1998년 부에노스아이레스 대주교가 되었으며, 2001년 추기경이 되었다. 2013년 3월 13일, 그는 266번째 가톨릭 교황이 되었다.

프란치스코 교황은 사후에 자서전 "희망Spera"을 펴내리라 생각했지만, 희망의 해를 지내는 희년에 출간하기로 마음을 바꾸었다. 희망 이야기로 가득한 이 책은 희망의 순례자로서 살아가는 길에 대한 비전과 의미 있는 방향을 제시한다.

"희망"은 20세기 초로 거슬러올라가 이탈리아에서 라틴 아메리카로 과감히 이주한 조부모들의 뿌리 이야기를 들려주면서 시작한다. 그러고나서 자신의 어린 시절, 젊은 시절의 열정과 고뇌, 사제직으로의 부르심, 사목 활동과 교황으로서 직면한 의미심장한 순간들에 대해 이야기한다.

"희망"은 가장 진솔하고 예언자적인 시각으로 친밀하게 이야기하듯 자신의 기억을 떠올린다. “희망”은 개인사는 물론 전쟁과 평화, 이민, 환경의 위기, 사회 정책, 여성의 지위, 성, 기술의 발전, 교회의 미래에 대해 말한다.

교황은 자신의 자서전이 희망의 여정에 대한 여러 이야기를 담은 "순례자의 보따리"라고 믿는다. “희망”은 과거에 있었던 일은 물론 앞으로 다가올 미래에 대해서도 나눈다.

프란치스코 교황은 희망이 "행동을 위한 미덕이자 변화의 원동력"이라고 말한다. “희망은 우리가 간절히 기다리는 꿈을 실현하기 위해 기억과 이상을 하나로 모아 주는 힘입니다. 꿈이 흐려질 때면, 우리는 기억 속에 깃든 작은 불씨에서 희망을 피워 내어 그 꿈을 새롭게 꾸어야 합니다. 우리 그리스도인들은 희망이 허상이 아니며 우리를 실망시키지도 않는다는 점을 명심해야 합니다. 모든 이는 영원한 봄날에 꽃을 피우려고 태어납니다. 마지막 날에 우리는 이렇게 고백할 것입니다. ‘당신께서 함께하지 않으신 순간은 제 기억 속에 없나이다.”

희망은 참으로 변화의 원동력이다. 희망은 우리가 겪는 삶의 기복을 이겨내게 한다. 희망은 여러 모습의 변화를 향해 돌고도는 여정을 거치도록 영감을 준다. 희망은 우리에게 힘을 주어 끊임없이 앞으로 나아가게 한다.
