 "Merry Christmas!" Buon Natale!"

Every year, we celebrate Christmas. During the holiday season, we find nativity scenes throughout the world. Whether Catholic or Protestant, Christmas has become a universally festive occasion. Would Jesus be born again in any of those beautifully and elegantly decorated mangers? Where can we search for Jesus in this world filled with disasters, terrorism, and hostility?  Recently, I was wondering whether going to a language school is better for my studies. I was eager to study but still hesitant and couldn't decide by myself. Then, a Sister said, "I have gaps here and there in my language because I didn't go to language school." Heeding her advice, I went to the language school to learn Italian. Nevertheless, even though we make efforts to improve, we can't but face some gaps in our language proficiency and in our lives as well. With much enthusiasm, we challenge ourselves to close the gaps, but they are natural and normal in our lives because nobody is perfect. Being human means that we are more or less fragile and limited in some ways. As times go on, I feel and realize that I can't do many things by myself. Interestingly at the same time, I do realize and believe that those gaps and limitations are the very way to humility, empathy, sympathy, compassion, sharing, and collaboration. It is in the empty space where Jesus is born and lives among us every day. If we are perfect and have no gaps, we will become self-sufficient and independent and ultimately we will not need anybody who can help and save us like Jesus.  It is quite interesting and inspiring to see the oculus, a nine-meter hole in the dome of the Pantheon in Rome first built in 27 B.C. and then renovated after a fire in 125 A.D. It is amazing to think of an architect who had imagined making a hole in the lofty domed ceiling of the Pantheon. In spite of the possible harm of rain, wind, and storm, the hollow hole has become a pathway for air, ventilation, and sunshine. A hole in a building can be harmful and dangerous, but I feel the hole in the Pantheon reveals our unconscious longing for the heavens. The hole is the mysterious gateway connecting us and God. Once the place for all Gods, the Pantheon has since served as the historical Church of Saint Mary and the Martyrs. While walking around here and there, I found another form of a hole in the architecture: most of the residential and commercial buildings have been built in the shape of a square or quadrangle with a hole or empty space in the middle, usually used either as a garden, yard or parking lot. Truly, it is in emptiness and nothingness that creativity, composure, acceptance, and appreciation come into being. Our sense of fragility, limitations, and incompleteness makes us more human, understanding, merciful,   and compassionate. The gaps make space to be filled with something more meaningful, creative, and abundant. Appreciating and cherishing those openings in the world, Pope Francis is always looking for the alienated and the marginalized and treats the homeless well. Limitations and obstacles in our lives are the birthplaces of Jesus in the generous perspective of the Pope. Surely in those empty spaces in our hearts, Jesus will be born again and again. “메리 크리스마스!” “성탄을 축하합니다!”

해마다 우리는 성탄을 경축하며 지낸다. 성탄절에 우리는 세계 곳곳에서 탄생하시는 예수님의 모습을 엿볼 수 있다. 가톨릭이든 기독교든 크리스마스는 세계적으로 기쁨을 나누는 잔칫날이 되었다.

예수님은 과연 아름답고 우아하게 꾸며진 마구간에서 다시 태어나실까? 온갖 재난과 테러, 적대감으로 가득한 이 세상 어디에서 우리는 예수님을 찾을 수 있을까?

최근 나는 학원에 다니는 것이 공부하는데 더 많은 도움을 줄까… 하고 고민했다. 공부하고 싶은 마음이 간절했지만 마음의 갈피를 잡지 못해 쉽게 결정할 수 없었다.

그런데 한 수녀님이 “난 학원에 다니지 않아 언어 능력에 여기저기 빈틈이 있어.” 하고 말했다. 그래서 나는 그 수녀님의 조언을 따라 이탈리아어 학원에 갔다.

하지만 우리가 아무리 노력해도 언어 실력은 물론 우리 삶 한복판에 있는 어떤 빈틈을 마주하게 된다. 열정을 다해 그 빈틈을 메우려고 애쓰지만, 우리 삶 가운데 자리한 부족함은 너무나 자연스러운 것이다. 그 누구도 완벽하지 않기 때문이다. 인간이 된다는 것은 어떤 면에서 연약함과 한계를 지니고 있음을 뜻한다.

시간이 흐를수록 나는 혼자서는 많은 일을 할 수 없음을 느끼며 깨닫는다. 또한 흥미롭게도 그러한 빈틈과 한계가 바로 겸손과 공감, 동정과 연민, 나눔과 협력으로 이어지는 길이라고 믿는다.

바로 그 빈틈에서 예수님이 태어나 날마다 우리 가운데 머무신다. 우리가 완벽하여 빈틈이 없다면 우리는 자립적이고 독립적이 되어 결국 예수님처럼 우리를 도와 구원해 줄 누군가의 도움도 필요하지 않을 것이다.

기원전 27년에 처음 지어졌다가 서기 125년에 불길에 휩싸여 복원된 로마 판테온에 있는, 지름이 9미터에 이르는 구멍(오쿨루스: 커다란 눈)을 바라보는 것은 무척 흥미로워 많은 영감을 불러일으킨다. 높이 솟아오른 판테온의 천장에 구멍을 내리라고 생각한 건축가를 떠올리는 것만으로도 놀랍기만 하다. 비바람과 폭풍이 들이닥칠 위험에도 그 텅 빈 구멍은 공기가 순환되어 신전 안을 환기시키며 햇살이 들어오는 통로가 된다.

건물에 난 구멍은 해롭고 위험할 수 있지만, 판테온 천장의 구멍은 하늘을 향해 우리가 지닌 무의식적 갈망을 드러낸다고 생각한다. 그 구멍은 우리와 하느님을 연결하는 신비로운 관문이다. 한때 모든 신들이 모이던 판테온은 시대가 흘러 역사적으로 기리는 ‘성모 마리아와 모든 순교자 성당’이 되었다.

이곳저곳을 거닐다 보니 일반 건축물에 또 다른 형태의 구멍이 있는 것을 보았다. 대부분의 주거지와 상가 건물 한복판에 있는 빈 공간이 바로 그것이다. 구멍과 같은 그 빈 공간은 정사각형이나 사각형 형태인데 흔히 정원이나 마당 또는 주차장으로 사용된다.

참으로 빈 공간과 아무것도 아님(無) 속에서 창의성과 평온함, 받아들임과 감사하는 마음이 솟아난다. 우리 자신의 연약함과 한계, 불완전함에 대한 인식은 우리를 한층 인간적이게 하고, 이해심과 자비와 연민이 많은 존재로 만든다. 빈틈은 공간을 만들어 주어 더욱 의미 있고 창의적이며 풍요로운 무언가로 채워지게 한다.

이처럼 세상에 자리한 열린 공간들을 음미하며 소중히 여긴 프란치스코 교황님은 언제나 소외된 이들, 변방에 있는 이들을 찾아 나서며 노숙자들을 환대했다. 교황님의 관대한 관점에 따르면 우리 삶의 한계와 장애물이 바로 예수님이 탄생하시는 자리다. 그렇다. 우리 마음에 있는 텅 빈 자리에서 예수님은 거듭 태어나실 것이다. 예수님이 그 텅 빈 자리에서 태어나실 때, 성문도 활짝 열릴 것이다.
