Chestnuts 밤

Around this vague time between late fall and early winter, winter snacks like chestnuts are popular. I like them as well. Whether roasted, boiled or raw, chestnuts are tasty and nutritious. When I had my annual spiritual exercises last autumn in Yeoju, I enjoyed picking up chestnuts while taking a walk.

Unlike the surrounding mountains in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, I couldn’t find chestnut trees on a mountain near my accommodations in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province.

One day, while taking a walk, I looked up in the sky and looked around the trees here and there. And I finally noticed several chestnut trees. It was such a joy for me to see chestnuts around. Picking them up from the ground became fun for a while in autumn.

I found another tall chestnut tree on a slope along one of my favorite walking paths in the mountains around. The chestnuts were much smaller than those from other chestnut trees. The tiny chestnuts that fell to the ground were so cute that I picked them up every time I went for a walk. I dried them near the windowsill in my room.

Then, I used a garlic press to peel the chestnuts. What a pity it was to find that many of them were attacked by chestnut weevils. What a surprise to see a few larvae still alive in the drying chestnut flesh.

The chestnut weevil burrows into the chestnut shell to lay eggs. The hatched larvae feed on the surface of the chestnut flesh and gradually grow in the flesh.

In general, mature larvae bore circular holes in the seed coat from late September and burrow into the ground again to build their earthen houses.

When some larvae grow larger and larger inside, they can’t come out easily because of their size. Thus, they cannot but sustain themselves within the chestnut flesh until it dries and twists by itself.

When the chestnut weevil approaches the blooming flowers of chestnut trees, the larvae are already latent in the growing chestnut flesh. It means larvae can’t come out of their shell. They remain until they eat out all the flesh within the shell.

Chestnuts in good condition are those that are not affected by weevils. It is something like the power of sin, evil or devils that eat out the mind and heart little by little. Without going through a process of inner transformation, they always linger in the mind. Being confined by themselves, they die in the shell. What a tragedy it is.

“What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate … So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh. The willing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not. For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want … So, then, I discover the principle that when I want to do right, evil is at hand. For I take delight in the law of God, in my inner self, but I see in my members another principle at war with the law of my mind, taking me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.” (Romans 7:15-23)

밤 Chestnuts

늦가을과 초겨울 사이에 우리는 밤 같은 겨울 간식을 즐긴다. 나도 밤을 좋아한다. 군밤이든 찐 밤이든 생밤이든 모든 밤은 참 맛있고 영양가도 풍부하다. 지난가을 여주에서 대피정을 할 무렵 나는 산책하면서 밤을 주어오곤 했다.

경기도 여주 변두리에 자리한 산들과 달리, 경북 안동에 자리한 숙소 근처 산에서는 밤나무를 좀처럼 찾아볼 수 없었다.

어느 날, 산책하는 동안 하늘을 바라보다 여기저기 서 있는 나무들을 둘러보았다. 그러다 마침내 밤나무 몇 그루를 발견했다. 산책길 주변에서 밤나무를 바라보니 흐뭇하기만 했다. 가을이 되면 땅에 떨어진 밤을 줍는 일이 참 즐겁다.

내가 가장 좋아하는 산길 가운데 하나인 어느 비탈길에 키 큰 밤나무 한 그루가 서 있는 것을 또 보았다. 여느 밤나무에 달린 밤보다 밤톨이 훨씬 작았다. 땅에 떨어진 작은 밤들이 무척 귀여워 산책할 때마다 주어와 내 방의 창틀에 두고 말렸다.

그런 다음 마늘 짜는 기구를 이용하여 밤껍질을 벗겼다. 그런데 밤바구미가 파먹은 밤이 상당히 많은 것을 보고 무척 아쉬웠다. 점차 말라가는 밤 속살 가운데 몇몇 밤벌레가 여전히 꿈틀거리고 있는 것이 무척 놀라웠다.

밤바구미는 밤송이 속에 주둥이를 내밀어 알을 낳는다. 부화한 애벌레는 밤의 속살 표면을 갉아 먹으며 그 속에서 서서히 자란다.

대개 9월 말쯤이면 다 자란 애벌레는 밤껍질에 동그란 구멍을 뚫고 나와 다시 땅속으로 들어가 흙집을 짓고 월동한다.

어떤 애벌레들은 밤 속살 안에 갇혀 점점 자라나면서 몸집이 커져 쉽게 빠져나오지 못한다. 그래서 속살이 말라 뒤틀릴 때까지 속살 가운데 머물러 버틸 수밖에 없다.

밤바구미가 피어나는 밤나무꽃에 알을 낳는 경우 애벌레는 자라나는 밤송이 속에 이미 잠복해 있다. 이는 유충이 껍질 밖으로 나올 수 없음을 뜻한다. 애벌레는 밤껍질 속에 있는 속살을 모두 먹어 치울 때까지 그 속에 가만히 있다.

상태가 좋은 밤은 바구미의 영향을 받지 않은 것이다. 이는 마치 죄악이나 악, 악마의 힘이 지성과 마음을 조금씩 갉아먹는 것 같다. 내적 변화 과정을 거치지 않은 악의 세력은 언제나 마음 한복판에 머물러 있다. 그러다 스스로 껍질 속에 갇혀 죽어간다. 참으로 안타까운 일이다.

“나는 내가 하는 것을 이해하지 못합니다. 나는 내가 바라는 것을 하지 않고 오히려 내가 싫어하는 것을 합니다... 그렇다면 이제 그런 일을 하는 것은 더 이상 내가 아니라, 내 안에 자리 잡고 있는 죄입니다. 사실 내 안에, 곧 내 육 안에 선이 자리 잡고 있지 않음을 나는 압니다. 나에게 원의가 있기는 하지만 그 좋은 것을 하지는 못합니다. 선을 바라면서도 하지 못하고 악을 바라지 않으면서도 그것을 하고 맙니다... 여기에서 나는 법칙을 발견합니다. 내가 좋은 것을 하기를 바라는데도 악이 바로 내 곁에 있다는 것입니다. 나의 내적 인간은 하느님의 법을 두고 기뻐합니다. 그러나 내 지체 안에는 다른 법이 있어 내 이성의 법과 대결하고 있음을 나는 봅니다. 그 다른 법이 나를 내 지체 안에 있는 죄의 법에 사로잡히게 합니다.”(로마 7,15-23)
