Sleeping rosaries 잠자는 묵주

“SIGNIS World Congress 2022” will be held on the topic of “Peace in the Digital World” from Aug. 16 to 19 at Jeong Hasang Hall, Sogang University in Seoul.

SIGNIS is a combination of the words “SIGN” and “IGNIS” (Latin for “fire”). The mission of SIGNIS is “to engage with media professionals and support Catholic communicators to help transform our cultures in the light of the Gospel by promoting human dignity, justice and reconciliation.”

One of the particular things that drew my attention is the collection movement of sleeping (unused or extra) rosaries at home. The rosary is a string of beads used by Catholics when praying to the Virgin Mary. The rosary is most popular form of prayer among Catholics. So it is common for those who have been baptized to have several rosaries. Each Catholic has at least one rosary. Many faithful Catholics have various rosaries at home.

Participating in the collection movement of sleeping rosaries to donate to people, especially in Africa, Scolastica, an elder sister of Sr. Susanna in our congregation expressed the following:

“From our parish priest, I just heard about the petition to collect sleeping rosaries to send to those who are having difficulties economically. In Africa, many people hesitate whether to buy food to eat or to buy the rosary to pray… I couldn’t collect sleeping rosaries by myself alone. I am so happy to imagine Africans praying to the Virgin Mary with the rosaries…”

SIGNIS World Congress 2022 will be held as a hybrid conference that combines face-to-face and non-face-to-face meetings. Together with virtual conferences, a metaverse platform will be opened in the cyber world. A mixed-media conference will be transmitted via YouTube, Zoom, the metaverse and television.

SIGNIS (the World Catholic Association of Communication) is held every four years as a non-profit Roman Catholic lay ecclesial movement for professionals in media communication, including press, radio, television, cinema, video, media education, internet and new technology.

As an organization with representation from over 100 countries, it was formed in November 2001 by OCIC (International Catholic Organization for Cinema and Audiovisual) and Unda (International Catholic Association for Radio and Television). In 2017, it also included UCIP (International Catholic Union of the Press).

In preparation for SIGNIS World Congress 2022, those who are involved in this meeting pray sincerely the following official prayer:

“O God, by your Word, You have created the universe and sent us Our Savior.
We thank You, God, for summoning us in spreading the good news through mass communication.
O God, as we embark on this endeavor under the theme 'Peace in the Digital World,' we ask that You lead the SIGNIS World Congress 2022 so that it may send the message of peace to the world.
Also, let the light shine upon us as we prepare for the Congress, and we ask that You provide us with those who may offer their prayers, services, and generous contributions.
Let all those engaged in the media industry become communicators of culture promoting peace and help all those around the world.
We pray that all communications on Earth may help reveal Your glory and sow the gift of peace. Amen.
Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us.
Saint Oscar Romero, pray for us.
Saint Andrew Taegon Kim and all the Martyr Saints of Korea, pray for us.”

잠자는 묵주

 

 2022 시그니스 세계 총회가 “디지털 세상의 평화”를 주제로 8월 16일부터 19일까지 서울 서강대학교 정하상홀에서 열린다.

 시그니스(SIGNIS)는 ‘SIGN’과 ‘IGNIS’(라틴어로 ‘불’을 뜻함)의 복합어다. 시그니스의 사명은 “인간의 존엄성과 정의와 화해를 도모하여 복음에 비추어 우리 문화를 변화시킬 수 있도록 미디어 전문가들과 협력하며 가톨릭 커뮤니케이터들을 지원하는” 것이다.

 특별한 프로그램 가운데 내 관심을 불러일으킨 것은 집에서 잠자는 묵주(사용하지 않거나 여분의 묵주) 모으기 운동이다. 묵주는 가톨릭 신자들이 성모님께 기도드릴 때 사용하는 도구로 묵주알을 엮어 만든 것이다. 묵주는 신자들이 가장 즐겨 바치는 기도 형식으로 세례를 받은 사람들은 대개 여러 개의 묵주를 가지고 있다. 각 신자는 적어도 묵주 하나를 지니고 다니며, 열심한 신자들 가정에는 다양한 묵주가 있다.

 성바오로딸수도회 수산나 수녀의 언니 스콜라스티카 자매는 특히 아프리카인들에게 전해주기 위해 잠자는 묵주 모으기 운동에 참여하면서 다음과 같이 말했다.

 “경제적으로 어려운 이들에게 보낼 잠자는 묵주를 모아 달라는 부탁을 본당 신부님한테서 들었습니다. 아프리카에는 먹을 것을 사야 할지, 기도할 묵주를 사야 할지 망설이는 사람들이 많습니다. … 저 혼자서는 잠자는 묵주를 모을 수 없었습니다. 아프리카 사람들이 묵주를 들고 성모님께 기도 드리는 모습을 그려보는 것은 참 기쁩니다.”

 2022 시그니스 세계 총회는 대면 회의와 비대면 회의가 결합된 하이브리드 컨퍼런스로 열린다. 화상 회의와 함께 사이버 세상에서 펼쳐지는 메타버스 플랫폼이 펼쳐진다. 미디어 믹스드 컨퍼런스는 유튜브, 줌, 메타버스, 텔레비전으로 전송된다.

 시그니스(세계가톨릭커뮤니케이션협회)는 언론, 라디오, 텔레비전, 영화, 비디오, 미디어 교육, 인터넷, 새로운 기술에 관련된 미디어 커뮤니케이션 전문가들을 위한 교황청 공인 비영리 가톨릭 평신도 단체로 4년마다 열린다.

 시그니스는 100여 개가 넘는 국가 대표들이 모인 단체로 OCIC(세계가톨릭영상인협회)와 Unda(세계가톨릭방송인협회)가 2001년 11월에 창립했고, 2017년에는 UCIP(세계가톨릭신문출판인협회)도 가담했다.

 시그니스 모임 관련자들은 2022 시그니스 세계 총회를 준비하면서 다음과 같은 공식 기도를 드리고 있다.

 “말씀으로 세상을 창조하시고 구세주를 보내주신 하느님!                                                        미디어를 통해 그 기쁜 소식을 전하도록 불러주심에 감사 드립니다.

하느님, 세상에 평화의 메시지를 전하고자 하는

평화의 빛을 세상에 전할 수 있도록 이끌어 주소서.

또 세계 총회를 준비하는 저희들을 비추시고,
