When I look back on the road I have walked so far, I am so grateful for every moment that has been bestowed by the grace of God. I am so thankful for everything that I hardly complain nowadays.

The late Bishop Rene Dupont once shared his prayer life of thanksgiving. When he prayed, he didn’t ask God for any grace but just gave himself over and entrusted everything to God while giving thanks constantly.

Just around the corner from the street of Toegye-ro in Andong, I came across a little shop that buys and sells gold. At first glance, the shop looks like an antique store. But if we look closely, the atmosphere is very different from a gold store. There are various tree branches engraved with the word “gamsa,” meaning gratitude. They are displayed here and there in a shop window, on a desk and near the wall inside the shop.

Entering the shop, we can meet a gentle person carving the word “thanks” on a Styrax shiraianus, or snowbell tree, with a small chisel. He has been doing this work for about 10 years.

A snowbell tree branch one meter long can hold about 400 characters or so. Sometimes he combines two words, “thanks” and “love,” and it becomes “gamsarang.”

He didn’t study at school, but he looks so free, peaceful and joyful. The secret of his joy is being grateful for everything always.

He has two sons and one daughter, who live far away from their hometown. His only hope is for his children and grandchildren to visit his home as often as possible, so he studied some ways for children to visit their parents. One of his secrets to draw his children and grandchildren back to his home was to do magic for them— and it worked. They still enjoy coming back home to see him.

He used to say that his children are the precious fragrance of life that he wants to breathe in. He expresses his longing for their visits, and they are willing to come to see their parents often.

At present, he is 76 years old, and he lives constantly with the purity inherent in his nickname, Iljuk, meaning “one bamboo.”

It has been about 10 years since he started engraving the same word again and again on snowbell tree branches. As he reached his seventies, he realized that the most important value or virtue is gratitude, for he felt so grateful for so many things throughout his life.

“When we are grateful, everything looks so good.” These words reveal his philosophy and attitude toward life. Thus, the first work of art he carved on wood is about his thankful heart. When we are grateful, everything truly looks better.

What will happen if I keep writing the keyword of life again and again for 10 years? First, my handwriting will be improved, and naturally I will create a unique style of calligraphy. Second, my inner attitude and perspectives on life will be transformed, mingled and united with the spirit of the very word.

“Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus … Test everything; retain what is good. Refrain from every kind of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, 21-22)

지금까지 걸어온 길을 되돌아보면 하느님이 은총으로 베풀어 주신 순간순간이 고맙고 또 고맙기만 하다. 모든 것이 고마워 요즘 나는 불평을 거의 하지 않는다.

선종하신 두봉 주교님은 삶으로 바치는 감사 기도를 한다는 이야기를 나누신 적이 있다. 주교님은 기도할 때 하느님께 어떤 은총을 청하기보다 자신을 온전히 내어 드리고 하느님께 모든 것을 맡기며 끊임없이 감사드렸다.

안동 퇴계로 모퉁이를 돌면 작은 금방이 있다. 언뜻 보면 골동품 상점 같기도 한데, 자세히 들여다보면 금방과는 매우 다른 분위기가 엿보인다. ‘감사’라는 글을 새긴 나뭇가지들이 쇼윈도우와 책상, 실내 벽 등 곳곳에 전시되어 있다.

가게에 들어서면 작은 끌로 쪽동백나무에 '감사'라는 말을 새기는 온화한 분을 만날 수 있다. 그는 10년 가까이 이 일을 해왔다.

1미터 길이의 쪽동백나무 가지에는 400여 개의 ‘감사’를 담을 수 있다. 때때로 ‘감사’와 ‘사랑’이라는 두 단어를 합쳐 ‘감사랑’이라고 새기기도 한다.

그는 학교에서 공부하지는 않았지만 무척 자유롭고 평온하며 즐겁게 살아간다. 그의 기쁨의 비결은 언제나 모든 것에 감사하는 것이다.

그에게는 고향에서 멀리 떨어져 사는 두 아들과 딸이 하나 있다. 그의 유일한 희망은 자녀와 손주들이 가능한 한 자주 집에 들리게 하는 것이다. 그래서 그는 아이들이 부모를 찾아오게 하는 여러 가지 방법을 탐색했다. 자녀와 손주들이 찾아오게 하는 비결 가운데 하나는 마술을 보여주는 것인데, 그 마술은 효과가 있었다. 아이들은 여전히 아버지를 만나러 집에 오는 것을 좋아한다.

그는 자녀들이 언제나 들이마시고 싶은 “소중한 삶의 향기”라고 말하곤 했다. 그는 아이들이 집에 오는 것을 바라며, 아이들은 기꺼이 부모님을 자주 찾아 뵙는다.

현재 76세인 그는 일죽(一竹)이라는 자신의 호에 담긴 순수함을 한결같이 간직하며 살아간다.

그가 쪽동백나무 가지에 같은 글자를 새기기 시작한 지도 어느덧 10년이 흘렀다. 일흔이 넘어서면서 그는 가장 중요한 삶의 가치 또는 미덕은 감사하는 마음이라는 것을 깨달았다. 평생 수많은 것에 감사드리며 살아왔기 때문이다.

"감사하면 모든 것이 좋아 보인다." 이 문구는 그가 지닌 삶의 철학과 태도를 드러낸다. 그래서 그가 나무에 새긴 첫 작품은 감사하는 마음에 대한 것이다. 감사할 때 모든 것이 참으로 아름다워 보인다.

10년 동안 삶의 키워드를 계속 쓴다면 어떻게 될까? 먼저, 필체가 좋아질 것이며, 자연스럽게 독특한 서체를 자아낼 것이다. 둘째, 삶에 대한 내적 태도와 관점이 변화되어 끊임없이 내가 쓴 단어가 지닌 정신과 어우러져 하나 될 것이다.

“언제나 기뻐하십시오. 끊임없이 기도하십시오. 모든 들에 감사하십시오. 이것이 그리스도 예수님 안에서 살아가는 여러분에게 바라시는 하느님의 뜻입니다. …모든 것을 분별하여 좋은 것은 간직하고 악한 것은 무엇이든 멀리하십시오.”(1테살 5,16-18.21-22)

In every archdiocese and diocese, holy shrines in memory of saints or martyrs are well-arranged to encourage faith among people. In Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, the best-known holy shrine is Ugok Shrine with its Chapel of Chilgeuk (Seven Victories) in memory of the life and philosophy of Confucian scholar Hong Yu-han (1726-85).

Several other holy shrines in Andong include Mawon Shrine with a beautiful story of friendship between Blessed Park Sang-geun Matia (1837-67) and Fr. Calais (1833-84), Jinanri Shrine where Ven. Fr. Thomas Choe Yang-eop (1821-61) passed away and Yeumok Shrine established by the families of Saint John Yi Yun-il (1823-67) and Seo Chi-bo Joseph (1791-1840).

For the Jubilee pilgrimage with the theme of hope in 2025, every Cathedral and holy shrine prepared a stamp for pilgrims. In Andong, Mokseongdong Cathedral has a stamp for visitors.

Mokseongdong Cathedral, located in a prime location overlooking the city, was established as Andong Chapel in 1921 and promoted to a parish in 1927. As the first Catholic Church that was established in Andong, it became the Cathedral of the Andong Diocese in 1969. In 1973, its name was changed from Andong to Mokseongdong.

Mokseongdong Cathedral became the center of the democratization movement along with the Andong Cultural Center until 1990. The Cathedral was reconstructed in 2004, and it will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027.

In Mokseongdong Religious Town where Mokseongdong Cathedral is situated, other historic buildings coexist together. Andong Presbyterian Church was established in 1909. Other religious center located in this area are the Confucian Culture Education Center where we can learn calligraphy, feng shui (geography of wind and water) and “I Ching” (Book of Changes).

Other centers include Daewon Temple (Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism) and Seongdeokdo Andong Gyohwawon (Correctional Center). Symbolically, representative religions such as Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, Catholics and Protestants are mingled together toward peace and hope in the world.

Downhill from Mokseongdong Cathedral, there is a cozy and charming red brick building called the Andong Diocese History Museum. Opened in 2024 in memory of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Andong Diocese, this history museum invites us to learn about the life of Nongeun Hong Yu-han, the root of the faith of the Andong region, the beginning history of martyrdom, the founding of the Korean Catholic Church and the history of the establishment of parishes in the northern region of North Gyeongsang Province.

Pastoral items from various local parishes, materials from the Catholic Farmers Association of Andong Diocese, relics from past bishops, the late Bishop Dubong’s room, the corner for parish priests, missionary priests and religious orders and precious items related to the parish’s holy shrines and parish villages are on display. The history museum opens Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Another meaningful presence in this area is the Pauline bookshop. Just located next to the Andong Diocese History Museum, Andong Pauline, run by the Daughters of St. Paul, is waiting for people. Andong Pauline was launched in the Andong Diocese as the place of light on Feb. 20, 1994, to proclaim the good news of the Gospels. It opens Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. On Saturday, it closes at 5 p.m.

Each presence witnesses the truth that leads us to be free.

모든 대교구와 교구에는 성인이나 순교자들을 기념하는 성지가 잘 준비되어 있어 신자들의 신앙심을 북돋운다. 경상북도 안동에서 가장 널리 알려진 성지는 우곡 성지로, 이곳에 유학자 홍유한(1726-1785)의 삶과 철학을 기리는 칠극(七極) 성당이 있다.

안동에 있는 성지 가운데는 복자 박상근 마티아(1837-1867)와 칼레 신부(1833-1884)의 아름다운 우정 이야기를 전하는 마원 성지, 가경자 최양업 토마스 신부님(1821-1861)이 선종한 진안리 성지, 성 이윤일 요한(1823-1867)과 서치보 요셉(1791-1840)의 유족들이 세운 여우목 성지가 있다.

2025년 희망을 주제로 한 희년 순례를 위해 모든 주교좌 성당과 성지는 순례자들을 위한 스탬프를 마련했다. 안동 목성동 주교좌 성당에도 순례자들을 위한 스팸프가 있다.

안동시가 한눈에 내려다보이는 명당에 자리한 목성동 성당은 1921년 안동 공소로 설립되었고, 1927년 본당으로 승격되었다. 목성동 성당은 안동에서 가장 먼저 세운 천주교회로 1969년 안동교구 주교좌 성당이 되었고, 1973년에 이르러 안동에서 목성동으로 그 이름을 바꾸었다.

목성동 성당은 1990년에 이르기까지 안동문화회관과 더불어 민주화운동의 구심점이 되었고, 2004년 신축하였으며, 2027년 본당 설립 100주년을 맞이한다.

목성동 성당이 위치한 목성동 종교 타운에는 유서 깊은 여러 건물이 공존한다. 안동교회 예배당은 1909년에 설립되었다. 이 지역에는 서예, 풍수지리, 주역을 배울 수 있는 유교문화교육관이 있다.

그 밖에도 대원사(대한불교 조계종)와 성덕도 안동 교화원(교도소)이 있다. 유교, 불교, 도교, 천주교, 개신교 등 대표적인 종교들이 세상의 평화와 희망을 향해 함께 어우러짐을 상징적으로 보여준다.

목성동 성당에서 내리막길을 따라가면 아늑한 자태로 눈길을 끄는 붉은 벽돌 건물로 된 안동교구 역사관이 있다. 안동교구 진출 50주년을 기념하여 2024년에 문을 연 안동교구 역사관은 안동 지역 신앙의 뿌리인 농은 홍유한의 삶, 순교 역사의 시작, 한국천주교회의 창립, 경상북도 북부 지역 본당 설정의 역사를 엿보게 한다.

여러 본당의 사목 용품, 가톨릭농민회 안동교구연합회 자료, 역대 교구장들의 유물, 고(故) 두봉 주교 방, 본당 사제들과 선교 사제와 수도회들을 위한 코너가 있고, 교구 성지와 교우촌에 관련된 소중한 물품들이 전시되어 있다. 역사관은 수요일부터 일요일까지 오전 10시부터 오후 4시 30분까지 열린다.

이 지역에 자리한 또 하나의 뜻깊은 현존은 바오로딸 서점이다. 안동교구 역사관 바로 옆에 자리한 안동 바오로딸 서점은 성바오로딸수도회가 운영하는 책방으로 독자들을 기다린다. 안동 바오로딸은 1994년 2월 20일 안동에 문을 연 빛의 터전으로 복음의 기쁜 소식을 전한다. 월요일부터 토요일까지 오전 10시 30분부터 오후 6시까지 열리며, 토요일에는 오후 5시에 문을 닫는다.

이와 같은 모든 현존은 우리를 자유로 이끄는 진리를 증거한다.
